Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Another Way

Chen Ming stood on solid ground.

The world before him was filled with things unknown yet incredibly novel to him.

Not just those purple plants that resembled the green plants on the planet in form but differed in color.

Chen Ming could casually shift his gaze and spot several new creatures he had never seen before.

The sheer abundance of new things made Chen Ming suddenly feel a bit confused.

Where should he begin to acquire crops that are cultivable, high-yielding, and have short growth cycles? Where is the most likely place for suitable crops to grow?

Chen Ming's eyes unconsciously scattered, plunging into thought.

However, Chen Ming didn't dwell on this problem for too long, nor did he fuss over where to start searching.

Instead, he directly chose the dumbest yet most straightforward and solid method.

Start from underfoot.

Chen Ming crouched halfway on the ground and pulled up a tuft of the purple grass leaves under his feet.

After taking a photo using the capture function of the advanced plant analyzer, he extracted a small segment as a sample and placed it inside the analyzer.

A line of small text appeared on the display screen of the analyzer.

[Analyzing...]

Soon it turned into a dozen tightly packed lines of small text.

Containing various characteristics of these purple grass leaves.

However, most of the analytical results held no practical meaning for Chen Ming.

Because for the current Chen Ming, glancing at the first two lines sufficed.

[Name: Purple Orchid Grass]

[Edibility: Inedible]

This analysis result was still somewhat within Chen Ming's expectations.

Chen Ming didn't expect to find suitable crops immediately upon landing on the planet, so he was patient.

He casually discarded the tuft of grass, noticing that a small bug flew out of it and settled on another grass leaf.

Chen Ming eyed the slightly chubby bug, suddenly realizing something.

Meat is a type of food too.

To survive six months in space, Chen Ming does not have to rely solely on the cultivation chamber.

Hunting can equally procure a considerable amount of food.

If he could fill an entire freezer with meat, sustaining for another three months would not be a problem.

Previously, Chen Ming's thoughts were confined due to the cultivation chamber.

Now suddenly seeing a lively creature, he was enlightened.

Moreover, Chen Ming needn't worry about some animals on Rimu Star being poisonous.

Since he could previously find the existence of air jellyfish in the terminal, surely other animals could be found too.

Even if he happens to encounter unidentified animals, unsure if they are edible.

Chen Ming is not without a solution.

He found some handy tools left by previous crew members in the living chamber.

Including something called the Edibility Analyzer.

This can help identify whether something is edible or not.

If all else fails, he could simply choose not to eat.

Following the hunting line of thinking, Chen Ming had another idea.

While hunting, he could observe the behavior of those animals; if they are herbivorous, the plants they eat might be consumable by humans.

If they are edible, that would be perfect; if not, at least he had the animal as a fallback.

Chen Ming's thoughts became clear.

After watching the small bug disappear into the grass, Chen Ming stood up and returned to the spaceship.

Not to fly, but to prepare for something else.

Preparations for hunting.

Although the area where he landed was relatively flat, the surroundings were mostly dense forests.

Flying the spaceship at low altitude could potentially scare them, causing them to hide.

With the spaceship's view restricted by the forest, it's easy to miss animals hiding within.

Thus, hunting animals cannot be directly done with the spaceship but reliant on Chen Ming himself.

Therefore, Chen Ming planned to transform the pistol he picked up from the Space Station for use as a hunting tool and for personal safety.

Although this pistol wasn't part of the spaceship, as long as Chen Ming put the pistol in any chamber of the spaceship, its presence would be displayed in the item panel of that chamber.

Then the pistol's panel would be displayed in front of Chen Ming.

[9mm Semi-electromagnetic Trigger Pistol]

[Manufacturer: Sinda Rockwell Weapons Company]

[Ammo: 5/7]

[Durability: 79%]

[Available Actions: Repair/Transformation]

As Chen Ming expected, the pistol had the options of repair and transformation.

After pressing the repair button, the bullets for the pistol were replenished, just like with the machine gun maintenance.

As long as Chen Ming brought enough repair materials on subsequent trips and his spirit kept up, it would essentially be a pistol with infinite bullets.

Then came the transformation.

Although Chen Ming mostly spent time reading the modification manuals for shipboard weapons and the spaceship itself,

he had also perused some firearm modification manuals, and often firearm modifications overlap with shipboard weapon modifications.

Thus, firearm modification methods are numerous, with various attachments, external devices, and modifications to the firearm body itself.

Such abundant options made the pistol's transformation panel considerably larger than panels of other equipment Chen Ming had modified.

Chen Ming made his final choice, picking six transformation options.

First is [Caliber Modification (.45)]; as a weapon for hunting and self-defense, Chen Ming only needed the pistol's caliber to be moderate, not too small nor too big.

Secondly, [Extended Magazine (20)]; this option surprised Chen Ming initially and was somewhat perplexing.

Because Chen Ming thought that an extended magazine was merely an accessory that could be swapped anytime.

But since it was in the transformation panel, Chen Ming wouldn't miss the opportunity to enhance the firearm.

Although he could refill bullets using the panel, repairs required time, and a larger magazine meant greater fault tolerance.

Of course, if too large, it wouldn't be ideal either; excess weight might cause issues for Chen Ming, who entirely relies on guessing and has no firearm experience.

Such as difficulty holding the gun steady or insufficient stamina for wearing it long-term.

20-round magazines seemed appropriate to Chen Ming.

Then [Armor-Piercing Bullet]; upon seeing this, Chen Ming had the same thoughts as with the extended magazine.

Even more extreme, it's merely a modification of the pistol's consumables; Chen Ming didn't know how it fit in.

But Chen Ming didn't dwell on it; as long as it's effective, it works.

Although Chen Ming hadn't hunted before, he heard that hunting animals only requires bullets to penetrate vital organs.

Thus, bullet penetration power is crucial.

The remaining three modifications were accessories, [Flashlight], [Red Dot Sight], with nothing much to say about them.

The last one, [Silencer], was something Chen Ming specifically sought out after noticing other accessories.

This item, Chen Ming believed, is most crucial for future hunting.

After finalizing these six choices, Chen Ming left the spaceship once more.

At least today, after repairing the spacecraft's armor, Chen Ming didn't have the energy to modify the pistol or spaceship weapons.

But Chen Ming didn't lack activities; he could still search within the spaceship's protected area for the specific plant he needed among the myriad of strange plants.
