"The handsome young man who brought you lunch at noon, is he your son-in-law?"
The White Mother chuckled and said, "No, he's my daughter's boyfriend."
"Wow, you're really lucky. He's so attentive as just a boyfriend; imagine if he were your son-in-law!"
"He paid for my surgery and treatment. I divorced my husband early on and raised my daughter alone. My daughter is now in college, and I usually do some work here and there, but I have no savings. Without him, I couldn't have had the surgery." The White Mother spoke with a hint of pride, "Luckily, my daughter is grown up and someone I can rely on."
"I really envy you. What does your daughter's boyfriend do for work?"
"He's a hairdresser."
"A haircutter?" A family member of another patient asked, "How much is his salary a month?"
The White Mother was hurt by this question. She had high expectations for her daughter, believing her looks were inherited from herself and should be used to the fullest.
