Chapter 148 - Chapter 147: Interlude (2)

Magneto floated slowly down from the sky. He landed softly on the floor. He looked at his daughter.

Wanda Maximoff stood in the center of the open area. Her body was glowing with red energy. Her hands moved in slow, deliberate patterns. They were covered with the same red energy.

Her eyes were closed in deep focus. She fired beams of the red energy at the sky. The red energy gathered into a single bright point in the air in front of her. Then she pushed forward.

Beams of red energy shot out like arrows. They struck the empty space and seemed to sink into nothing. Each beam made the air ripple like water.

Magneto watched her work. He waited until she paused to catch her breath.

"Wanda," he said in his deep, steady voice. "How much progress have you made with breaking the barriers and opening a portal to the other universe?"

Wanda opened her eyes. The red glow in them faded slowly. She turned to her father. A wild, almost manic light shone in her gaze.

"Significant," she answered. "The barriers seemed to have weakened further for some reason some hours ago. I do not know the reason behind it but it has reduced the timeline by at least a couple years."

Magneto's lips curved into a satisfied smile. "Good. Very good."

Wanda took a step closer. Her voice grew more excited. "I would be able to open a gateway or a portal to the other side soon. We would be able to enter the other universe soon."

Magneto floated closer. His smile grew wider. "Good. Good. If you are not wrong about that universe's Earth having no mutants then that universe would be a perfect place for us. We would silently leave this world and no one would even know."

He spread his arms as if embracing the idea.

"To a world that does not know about mutants would not be able to discriminate against them."

"A world where we would be able to live freely. A world that we would be able to dominate."

"A world without any X-Men and Charles with no one to oppose us."

"With no one trying to experiment on our kind or if they try, they would be executed."

His voice rose with passion. "Think about it, Wanda. No more hiding. No more fear. No more running from soldiers or governments that see us as threats. Mutants will walk the streets as equals. No, as superiors. We will build a society where our gifts are celebrated. Where your children can grow up without being called freaks. Where mutant families can live without looking over their shoulders. This is the future our people deserve."

Wanda listened with shining eyes. Every word fueled the fire inside her. She clenched her fists. Red energy sparked between her fingers.

Magneto lowered his arms and looked at her with fierce tenderness.

"Remember, if you want your children to be safe and live in a safe world, you would have to do this for them. They would be in a place where no one would be able to harm them. They would have friends and live a peaceful life."

He stepped closer. His voice dropped to a fervent whisper.

"Take us to a universe where there is no knowledge of mutants and no X men. Where mutants would live supremely. Where your kids would be treated as royalty."

Wanda nodded. Her voice shook with emotion. "I will. My babies will live without any fear of being hunted down. I would make sure of that."

Magneto placed a hand on her shoulder. He gave a single nod. Then he floated upward and away. His cape caught the wind as he rose.

A man with silver hair approached from the shadows. Pietro Maximoff, Quicksilver. His face was hard and anger burned in his eyes.

"Father," Pietro said. "You are using your own grandchildren as leverage to make your daughter do this. How low have you fallen?"

Magneto turned in the air. He looked down at his son.

"I am doing this for them too, Pietro. And it's not like I have them kidnapped or would kill them if Wanda doesn't do what I want her to do. She knows that what we are doing is the right thing and that's why she is doing it."

Pietro stopped walking. He stared up at his father. "You have become too delusional. You are breaking the barriers between two universes? What do you think that would mean?"

He took a step forward. His voice grew louder.

"We don't know anything about this. You are gambling with billions of lives. And for what? A dream of mutant supremacy? You are not saving anyone. You might just destroy everything."

Magneto's face remained calm. "This is the only chance we have for a quiet peaceful life, Pietro. The government is developing weapons to eradicate mutants. They have made large progress in it and we would be annihilated soon if we do not make our move."

Pietro shook his head. "You always say that. You always find a reason to justify more destruction. But this is too far. You are not protecting mutants. You are using Wanda's love for her children to fuel your war."

Magneto floated lower. "I am doing what must be done."

Pietro's voice became quiet and cold. "I will be gone for a while."

His expression changed to a serious one. "But if anything happens to Wanda or my nephews, you would pay dearly for it."

With that he turned back and left in a blue blur. Magneto could not even catch a sight of his son. The air vibrated for a moment where Pietro had stood. Then silence returned.

Magneto watched his son go. His face showed no emotion. He floated away without another word.

And meanwhile as everything that was going on, inside a pyramid of Cairo, Egypt an ancient being opened his eyes.
