Morning in the Borderlands was a chaotic symphony: crows cawing, distant howls, dew still trembling on every leaf, and the lingering smell of last night's burnt rabbit. I awoke with a start, new boots creasing my cheek, and the unmistakable fizz of power humming through my veins.
Level 5. It wasn't just a number. It was a promise a crackling, impatient promise that things were about to get weird. And knowing my life, "weird" probably meant flaming pants, angry monsters, and more sarcastic commentary from my one and only System.
I sat up, blinking blearily, and immediately stubbed my toe on the horned rabbit corpse.
[Good morning, Host! Congratulations on surviving another night without being eaten, robbed, or recruited for amateur adventurer theatre.]
I grunted, rolling my shoulders. "Feels like I've been run over by a cart full of potatoes. But… stronger."
A golden window shimmered in front of me, more dramatic than usual swirling lights, the faint sound of distant trumpets, and, I swear, digital fireworks that spelled out LEVEL UP! in midair.
[Level 5 Achieved! Stat Points +3 | Skill Point +1]
[Please choose a New Perk:]
Fire Mastery I: ("Because setting things on fire is only fun if you do it well.")
Quick Learner: ("Why fail once when you can fail twice as fast and learn from it?")
I considered. Fire Mastery was the obvious choice. Fire was my thing, my only real flex. But Quick Learner… The world was bigger than fire, and I needed every edge. Still, the thought of bigger, better explosions was hard to resist.
After a minute of painful indecision, I tapped Fire Mastery I. If I was going to get out of this alive, I might as well be memorable.
The system cheered in confetti. [Fire Mastery I obtained! Your flames burn hotter, and you have unlocked: Fire Lance. Please avoid accidental incineration.]
I flexed my fingers, feeling the magic swirling beneath my skin hotter, brighter, alive.
But the party wasn't over yet.
The system's blue window went black, then flashed neon yellow. The world around me faded, and suddenly, my entire HUD transformed into something between a game show and a fever dream.
A booming, over-the-top voice blared:
[ SYSTEM EVOLUTION PREVIEW! ]

The music faded. The system's window hung in the air, sparkles gently raining down.
I shook my head, grinning despite myself. "You really went all out, didn't you?"
[If you can't dazzle your Host, what's the point of omnipotence?]
Empowered and mildly overwhelmed, I stood and let the surge of new magic tingle through me. I flexed my fingers and tried Fire Lance for the first time an elegant, whiplike spear of fire.
It whooshed out impressive, powerful, and immediately set the hem of my cloak ablaze.
"AH System!"
[Congratulations! You've discovered a classic mistake. Would you like to purchase a Fire Insurance Potion for 999 gold?]
I flailed, stamping out the flames, half-laughing, half-panicked. "I'll take my chances. Next time, let's aim for the rabbit, not the wardrobe!"
I packed up, boots feeling magical, and followed the system's map. By noon, the undergrowth parted and I stumbled into the overgrown bones of an ancient settlement low stone walls, twisted metal, rusted armor half-buried in moss. The system pinged:
[Ruins Detected: Dwarven Outpost, est. 'Long Before You Were Born'. Magic Residue: Moderate. Probability of ghosts: Medium-high.]
The stones were carved with runes some glowing faintly, others chipped by time. A battered shield leaned against a doorway, still bearing the stylized anvil of the Stonebeard clan. The air shimmered with old magic, like a song just out of hearing.
I explored, careful not to touch anything that looked ready to bite. I reached for a chunk of rune-etched stone and nearly jumped out of my new boots as a soft, ethereal voice echoed beside me.
"Careful, little flame," said a figure half-hidden in ivy and sunlight. She was part woman, part birch tree: hair a cascade of leaves, skin laced with silver bark. Her eyes, wise and playful, watched me without fear.
A dryad.
I gaped. "Uh sorry. Didn't mean to trespass."
She smiled, voice rustling like wind through branches. "All who seek power pass through these lands, Arielle. But beware power twists the roots, as well as the fruit."
I nodded, remembering the Evolution windows. "Do you know about…choices? About evolving?"
"More than you, child. Each path has a price. Even fire must burn something to shine." She brushed a rune, and it glowed. "Choose the path that sets your soul alight, not just the world."
A chill danced down my spine. The dryad faded into dappled sunlight, leaving only the whisper of leaves and the faint, spicy scent of magic.
The system popped up, all business.
[Cryptic hint received. Achievement unlocked: 'Nature's Pep Talk'. +1 Wisdom.]
I looked back at the ruined outpost, then at my own hands, still tingling with new power.
