Chapter 14 - The USB

Amira sat in her bedroom, the room dark except for the soft glow of her laptop screen.

The USB Lydia had handed her lay beside the keyboard like a loaded weapon.

Her hands trembled as she slid it into the port.

A single folder popped up.

"For Her Eyes Only"

She clicked it.

Inside were audio files, scanned documents… and one video.

Her breath caught.

She clicked play.

The screen flickered.

Lydia stood in a dimly lit room, a timestamp flashing in the corner nine months ago.

She looked into the camera, eyes tired, voice flat.

"If you're watching this, then David didn't have the courage to tell you the truth. But someone should."

Amira leaned forward, every nerve alert.

"The night of the miscarriage… he didn't come to the hospital immediately. He went to see me first. He begged me to back off. Said he was going to lose you."

Lydia's lips twisted into a broken smile.

"But I knew something he didn't."

She held up a crumpled hospital report.

"This report was changed. By me. With help from someone who owed me a favor."

The screen zoomed in. Amira's name. Her doctor's name. The words: Uterine surgery recommendation: required.

Tears stung her eyes.

"He never knew what I had done until months later. He found this report. He confronted me. But instead of telling you he buried it. He didn't want to lose you again."

Lydia stared directly into the lens.

"Ask him. If he lies again… you'll know."

Amira's Collapse

The video ended.

Amira sat motionless.

Everything she thought she knew had just cracked wide open.

David had known.

He had kept her in the dark.

Even now, while trying to win her back, he was protecting the image of a man she once loved not the truth.

She felt sick.

Betrayed.

Confused.

But something else clawed at her heart…

The girl Lydia had mentioned.

"She looks a lot like you…"

Who was she?

The next morning, Amira stood at David's doorstep, video loaded on her phone, eyes swollen but fierce.

When he opened the door and saw her, he smiled faintly.

"I was just about to call"

She raised the phone. Pressed play.

He listened.

And when it ended… he didn't speak.

Didn't deny it.

Didn't flinch.

Amira's voice cracked. "You knew. And you didn't tell me."

"I wanted to protect you."

"You lied to me."

He stepped aside.

"There's more you need to know."

She didn't move.

"There's a girl," he continued, voice heavy. "She's not mine. But she's connected to all this. And if we don't act soon… she might be in danger."

Amira stared at him.

"Who is she, David?"

He opened a drawer and pulled out a photo.

He handed it to her.

Amira gasped.

The girl in the photo had her eyes.

Her smile.

Her mother's face, Amira's cousin, Rihanna
