Chapter 28 - A Date

Minato POV

The echoes of that night, of Toga's whispered confession and the unexpected kiss, had lingered in my mind for days. It was a pleasant warmth, a new kind of emotion that hummed beneath the surface of my otherwise meticulously planned life. The thought of her, the way her eyes lit up, the shy fidgeting of her fingers – it brought a smile to my face. This wasn't just a mission anymore; it was something real, something personal.

A few days later, I decided it was time. I sent her a simple message: "Hey Toga, would you want to go on a date sometime? Maybe the amusement park this weekend?"

My heart did a tiny, uncharacteristic flutter as I waited. It wasn't about facing villains or dodging explosive Quirks; this was different. Then, my phone buzzed. A quick, enthusiastic reply: "YES! Absolutely, Minato-kun! I'd love to!"

A genuine, wide grin spread across my face. Success.

The weekend arrived, crisp and bright. I picked Toga up, and she looked absolutely radiant, dressed in a cute, casual outfit that still managed to hint at her unique style. Her eyes, usually intense, were sparkling with an almost childlike excitement.

"An amusement park!" she exclaimed, practically bouncing in her seat as I drove. "I haven't been to one in ages!"

"Good," I replied, a lightness in my voice. "Then we'll make sure it's memorable."

The amusement park was a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors, joyous screams, and the dizzying scents of popcorn and cotton candy. We started with the roller coasters, the wind whipping through our hair as we plummeted down drops and spun through loops. Toga's laughter was infectious, loud and unrestrained, completely unlike the quiet girl I'd first observed years ago. She held onto my arm on the steeper rides, a comfortable intimacy settling between us.

"That was amazing!" she shrieked after one particularly exhilarating coaster, her cheeks flushed with excitement.

"Told you so," I grinned, feeling a genuine lightness I rarely allowed myself.

Next, we tackled the water rides. We crammed into a log flume, and Toga squealed with delight as we splashed down, getting thoroughly soaked. She didn't even mind the cold water; instead, she splashed me playfully. We then ventured into a spooky haunted house ride, Toga pretending to be scared only to jump out at me with a mischievous giggle every time a fake ghoul popped out. Her unique blend of playful mischief and genuine delight was captivating.

We moved to the arcade, where I, perhaps a bit too easily, dominated the games. Toga shrieked with delight as I racked up tickets, effortlessly sinking basketballs and hitting bullseyes. I won her an oversized plushie – a slightly creepy but undeniably cute bat – which she immediately clutched to her chest.

"He's perfect!" she declared, hugging the bat plushie. "My new best friend!"

Next, the Ferris wheel. As we slowly ascended, the park spread out beneath us, a shimmering tapestry of lights and sounds. At the very top, the world seemed to hold its breath.

"It's beautiful," Toga whispered, leaning her head slightly against my shoulder, her gaze fixed on the twinkling city lights in the distance.

"It is," I agreed, my eyes on her, mesmerized by the soft glow on her face.

We shared churros dusted with cinnamon sugar, our fingers brushing as we reached for them. We tried our hand at quirky carnival games, Toga's competitive spirit coming out in full force as she tried to knock down milk bottles. She told me about her favorite heroes, her aspirations for U.A., and some of the sillier things Mina and Kirishima had done recently. I found myself opening up more than usual, sharing anecdotes from my own childhood, even if I had to carefully filter them through the lens of this world's reality.

The hours melted away, filled with genuine laughter, shared jokes, and an easy companionship that felt utterly natural. It was a day free from the weight of heroics or vigilante work, just two teenagers enjoying each other's company.

As evening descended, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, we decided to get dinner. We found a cozy little restaurant tucked away from the main bustle of the park, its warm lighting and quiet atmosphere a welcome change after the day's excitement.

"Today was... perfect, Minato-kun," Toga said softly, stirring her pasta. "Thank you."

"It was," I agreed, meeting her gaze. "I had a really great time, Toga."

"I was a little worried, you know," she confessed, a shy smile on her lips. "About what you'd think. About my quirk. About... me."

"Toga," I said gently, reaching across the table to take her hand. Her fingers were surprisingly warm in mine. "I think you're incredible. Your quirk is a part of you, and it's amazing. And you... you're one of the most genuine people I know. And fiercely loyal to your friends."

Her cheeks flushed, and her eyes sparkled. "You really think so?"

"I do," I affirmed, squeezing her hand lightly.

The conversation flowed effortlessly, deeper now, touching on dreams, fears, and the future. I learned more about the quieter sides of Himiko, the girl who loved to draw and who, despite her past, held onto a fierce hope for good.

After dinner, I drove her home, the evening air cool and pleasant. We pulled up to her villa, and the familiar porch light flickered on. I cut the engine, and a comfortable silence settled between us, the kind that speaks volumes without words.

We got out of the car, and she turned to me, her fingers playing with the strap of her small purse. "Thanks again, Minato-kun. For everything today."

"Anytime, Toga," I said, a smile playing on my lips.

She shifted her weight, her gaze flickering down, then up to meet mine. There was a hesitant question in her eyes, a boldness gathering. She took a small step closer. My heart began to thump a little harder.

Then, without another word, she leaned in, her eyes closing. Her lips, soft and warm, met mine.

It was a gentle touch, a tentative kiss, but I didn't hesitate. I reciprocated, my own lips softening, my hand instinctively reaching up to cup her cheek. The world around us seemed to melt away, leaving only the quiet hum of the night and the gentle press of her lips against mine. It was sweet, innocent, and undeniably real.

After a few blissful moments, she pulled back, her eyes fluttering open, a deep blush staining her cheeks. She didn't run this time. She just looked at me, a silent question in her gaze.

I smiled, my thumb gently caressing her cheek. "Good night, Toga."

"Good night, Minato-kun," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

She leaned in once more, placing a quick, chaste kiss on my other cheek, then turned and gracefully slipped into her house, the door clicking shut behind her.

I stood there for a long moment, the warmth of her kiss still lingering on my lips, the sensation of her touch on my cheek. My strategic mind, so often occupied with chakra control and combat scenarios, felt gloriously, utterly blank. A wide, foolish grin spread across my face.

This was... nice. More than nice. This was a whole new kind of thrill.
