Chapter 12 - History (II)

"That's when, on the left shore of the continent… 'it' appeared."

A quiet tension settled in the room. Everyone knew what I was referring to ,After all… it is the reason behind the struggle of humanity all these years.

"The Abyss of the Demons."

Some students nodded, Some frowned. But most were silent. Afterall they knew the weight ,these words hold.

I continued.

"The only rank dungeon ever recorded in human history. And from its depths emerged —the embodiment of chaos and destruction... the Demon King himself. A walking calamity. The first and only ranked being of that time."

I paused, letting the words settle again.

"He didn't come with an army. He was the army itself."

Some students swallowed hard. Others stiffened in their seats. Even in a world where dungeons and monsters were known, the Demon King was something else a nightmare in physical form.

"Thankfully, he didn't attack humanity right away. That delay gave us room to breathe, to prepare, to hope. But even that brief moment of mercy had its price."

I glanced around the entire lecture hall , some students were looking at me , some at professor ,and some at their desk.

"During that time, demons—encouraged by the Demon King's arrival, began their march once again. The one commanding them were the powerful Demon Lords, they swept across the western half of the continent… and claimed it in just 6 months. We tried to fightback but we couldn't put up proper resistance them. The demon with boosted morale because of demon king and a proper commanding unit were a lot dangerous than before. "

"Around 3 billion recorded lives were lost during the demon march—including powerful rankers and ordinary humans. It was one of the darkest chapters in human history. But where there is doom, there is also hope.

During that time, two of the four  rankers managed to ascend to rank. A flicker of hope lit up once again."

"Six months after ascending, those two rankers, along with the remaining two rankers, joined forces with dozens of S-rankers and many Mid and low rank fighters to fight against the demons, this time together , as one because they all knew that the demons were growing stronger at an alarming rate, and if they waited any longer, there might be no chance left to resist. So, they decided to launched an all out war."

"Thus, the struggle began once again. Both humans and demons started falling on the battlefield. The demons were fewer in number, but each one of them was a powerful existence— even the weakest among them stood at rank.

On the other hand, humans had strength in numbers. We ganged up and took the demons down in teams. In the early phase of the war, humans were winning easily.

But then, near the end ,when we thought we had the upper hand—he appeared.

The Demon King.

A rank being, leading his army with four of his most loyal generals ,two rank demon lords and two rankers. The heavy hitters were all present there. It was like he came to end the war in one final blow.

From that moment on, the battle turned into a clash between the pinnacle existences of both sides. All those below S-rank quickly retreated, because this fight was now between monsters in human and demon form." I paused.

'Maybe I should finish this now,' I thought to myself. I had been dragging it out intentionally—after all, making a strong impression on the first day never hurt anyone. A noble student who seemed deeply invested in history, someone who took his studies seriously though my rumours begged to differ.

I straightened a little and continued.

"After a long and bloody battle between both sides, humanity finally managed to push back the tide. Our two rankers—fighting with everything they had—teamed up against the Demon King. Together, they succeeded in landing heavy blows and managed to seriously injure him."

A short pause, my voice calm but steady.

"But… they didn't make it out alive."

Silence hung in the air. I could feel the weight of the moment settling in the classroom.

"In that final clash, three of the four demon lords were slain, along with many ranked demons. But the cost for humanity was equally severe. We lost our two rankers and many rankers who stood alongside them."

I let that sink in before raising my head slightly and saying, "The names of those two rankers were Thalor Frostbane and Kevin Voltshade."

My tone grew a little more firm, tinged with pride—at least when I said the name Frostbane. I didn't have much left to take pride in, but this was one of them.

"These tw—NO, not just them, but all the humans who stood up to fight in that war are nothing less than heroes. Their sacrifices, their strength, and their will to protect is the reason we are still here today."

I ended it there, letting the words hang.

"The Demon King was wounded severely in the Great War that he has only been seen three or four times since then But each time he appeared his pressure was said to be enough to crush B rankers and below. His every appearance carried death of millions. One of his demon lords managed to survive aswell, though he too suffered heavy injuries. From what we know, that demon lord took over most of the military command while the Demon King recovered in the shadows.

But the peace didn't last.

Over the years, the Demon King has regained his strength and more. According to the last time he appeared on the battlefield, his power had reached rank. A level that far surpasses what we once thought possible.

Now, he commands a force more terrifying than before. 3 new demon lords, each confirmed to be rank. Alongside them are dozens of rank demons and a army of and rank ones. A structured army of Doom."

"That's all, Professor," I said, finally taking my seat. A dry feeling crept up my throat—I had been speaking for quite a while. I pulled out a water bottle from my space ring and took a few deep gulps. The cool water hit just right.

"Good answer, student Thorin. You are rewarded with 10 merit points," Professor Kane's voice echoed through the hall.

"Huh?" I blinked, genuinely surprised. I hadn't expected to receive merit points just for answering a question.

"Thank you, Professor," I said, remembering to show appreciation. A few students turned their heads toward me. Some looked impressed. Others like the Brown hair guys next to me—clicked their tongues in irritation. Clearly, not everyone appreciated my little moment of bliss.

Professor Kane didn't pay attention to their reactions. He continued, his voice calm but firm.

"As student Thorin said, humanity suffered devastating losses against the demons. But we survived. Not because we were stronger, not because we were more clever, but because people gave everything—blood, sweat, and their lives , for sole reason to protect humanity.. And now, the burden of carrying humanity forward falls on your shoulders."

He paused, slowly scanning the hall, letting his words sink in.

"Yes, the Demon King currently stands at rank," he continued, "backed by four ranked demon lords and an army of , , and rank demons."

A faint tension settled in the room. Even if we knew this, hearing it from a seasoned professor hit different.

"But Don't lose hope as humanity is not without strength. We, too, have our champions. Four rankers stand on our side. And more the being said to be the pride of humanity—the one and only human in history to ascend to rank..."

He let the silence stretch just long enough before finishing:

"the Headmaster of Demonbane Academy."
