Chapter 16 - The Caliburn Institute II

The elf bully's two party companions, the Nightskin Demon girl and the Slime girl placed a hand on his shoulder. The boy's mana began to grow dense to the point that it was visible to the naked eye, he geared back and launched a punch toward my sister's face. The punch comes centimeters away from Minerva's nose, much to everyone's surprise; Minerva's shadows latch onto the boy's arm, preventing him from moving closer. Monspeed grabbed a fork and began to etch his name in the air, the ambient mana in the dining hall began to boil and all the students all fled the room.

"They're fighting in the Dining Hall! Someone call a professor!" The students ran throughout the halls; teachers and staff rushed out of their rooms to find the source of the commotion.

In The Dining Hall

Meliodas grabbed a knife and weaved his name in the air, "Wind Signature: Wind Wall". A massive wall of wind formed around us and the remaining students; some students tried to break through the wall, however, the wind moved so fast that it shredded anything that came in contact with it.

The slime girl gives the demon girl a quick nod and the two start chanting louder; the elf boy's mana began to flare and he broke free from Minerva's hold. He rushed towards Minerva with a densely coated fist of mana.

"I think you've had enough fun," a random voice echoed throughout the dining hall. I looked up and saw a slim man with dark brown skin, blonde hair, and neon green eyes, wearing a green witch's hat holding four different colored feathers, standing on the balcony of the dining hall, smiling. The man pulled a green feather from his hat and began to scribe, "Aspect of Gaia: Earth Signature: Root Cage!" the man shouted.

Roots began to sprout from the ground around us; the roots formed into cages holding each of us that were in the fight. The man leaped from the balcony and immediately dispelled Meliodas' spell. The remaining students stopped in awe at the professor's incantation. Another professor, wearing battle armor and long blue kinky hair enters the dining hall and stands next to the man in the witch's hat, "Fighting on your first day, looks like this lot might cause us some issues, eh Dorinda," the male professor asked his colleague.

"Please do your best not to call me by my first name in front of students, Dmitri-I mean, Professor Greenwitch," the female professor demanded. "You will refer to me as Professor Bouldier, understood?"

Professor Greenwitch erupted in laughter as the two professors approach us caged students. The two each pulled out a magical scroll that contained their respective class rosters. "Yeah, yeah, let's see, oh! It looks like everyone here is split between both our classes! Isn't this convenient," Professor Greenwitch chuckled.

Professor Bouldier looked at her scroll and began to read it aloud, "Socodka Shaaz Geerida, Yume Mugen, Karenza Manadara Sadīvī, Monspeed Akin Wyltt, and Meliodas Tristan Wyltt; yeah, you all are mine alright," next to each name, a picture of the student materialized. "C'mon, we're already behind schedule..." Professor Bouldier pulled out a stiletto from her boot holster and began to scribe a spell to free her students. She then scribed another incantation of chains that linked her to her students by their ankles. "You're not in trouble, yet," she continued. "However, I don't want you to get lost in this building, it's a lot bigger than it initially seems."

The professor left the dining hall with her students and Professor Greenwitch turned to look at those of us that were remaining, "Luckily for the rest of you, our New Student Orientation will take place here in the dining hall," Professor Greenwitch exclaimed with joy.

"We're going to have it here," I asked. "Where is everyone?"

Professor Greenwitch chuckled, "You're all already here! Class 1-A and 1-B are special classes that usually hold about four to five students that the head mistress deems to be more than exceptional," the professor started pacing in front of us. "That being said, each of you, including the students that just left, are all quite interesting," he explained, "displaying levels of mana manipulation that most adults dream of pulling off."

Professor Greenwitch stopped in front of me and pulled a white feather from his hat and started to scribe, "Aspect of Gaia: Air Signature: Wither!" With a flick of his wrist, the wood cages holding us began to rot and wither away; each of us were completely speechless.

We stepped down from our once wooden cages and took a seat in at a table. The professor took his scroll and began to go over the curriculum, lectures such as basic mana control, mana manipulation, basics in mana reservation, Presence Sense, and many other topics in the mystic arts. Each of us looked through our scrolls with confused faces.

The professor erupted in laughter once more, "Don't worry children, it'll make sense once we move forward with classes. I did just want to meet all of you today and get a feel for my newest class!"

"Ummm, Professor-?" Iniko asked as he raised his hand.

Professor Greenwitch smacks his own forehead, "Oh dear! I went on and on and didn't even properly introduce myself! I'm the amazing, the wonderful, the most eccentric professor Caliburn and Avalon Academy has ever had the pleasure of employing, Professor Dmitri Greenwitch! I look forward to being your favorite teacher!"

Each of us forced a smile and awkwardly applauded our new teacher.

And in that exact instant, each of us, Minerva, Iniko, Renata, and myself each had the same thought, This guys a total nut case!

Professor Greenwitch straightened his posture and cleared his throat, "For the remainder of your academic careers, I will be your only instructor. So get comfortable with the faces you see around, because it's going to be a while before you're on own. Now, go ahead and go to your rooms and get settled in, it may be orientation for the other students, but we'll start bright and early in the morning!"

Like clockwork, each of us let out a painstaking groan, as I put away my things, I made eye contact with a silhouette of a woman standing on the dining hall's balcony; I blinked and the woman instantly vanished. Professor Greenwitch approached me with a smile and directed me and the rest of the class out of the dining hall. I dismissed the woman and continued to gather my things, however, looking back on it, I should have probably acted with more caution.

Later That Evening

Iniko and I sat in our room, we hadn't had a chance to speak with each other upon our initial greeting, "So, how did you end up meeting Mom?"

Iniko looked down at the ground before he spoke, he smiled gently, "When the Lizardmen came to the armory, they had two people that didn't look like the elves or dwarves that they normally capture," he stated. "So, I got curious, M'Lady was so kind, and gave me a name for helping them escape".

I bolstered a smile, "Well Niko, just know that she had some pretty awesome kids that act just like her! So she's still technically with you; we're brothers from here on out, never forget that!"

Iniko directed his attention to me, he expressed a heart-warming smile to me, he was in fact my new brother. But, the connection that we shared, like with Minerva and Renata, transcended our comprehension at the time.

I stood up and approached Niko extending my hand out to him, he grabs my hand and stood up. He squeezed my hand tightly, I looked up and saw his eyes filled with water. I was no better because my vision also grew watery. Before we knew it, the both of us were on the floor sobbing crying. We had been through so much; I had to traverse through an unfamiliar forest with my siblings and it was our first time ever leaving the manor. Niko lived a life of seclusion and the first person that he ever met and was kind to him, who just so happen to be my mother, was almost murdered in front of not just me, but him too. I'm not the one to probe, but if I knew how to control my telepathy to the extent to read minds, I'm sure he was blaming himself for what happened. To be honest, I feel like it's my fault, I was so eager to go to school, and I was showing off. That was a serious situation, and I acted like I was playing a video game, a video game, I had to remind myself that this isn't a game, this is my life. I may have been reincarnated, but I can easily lose my life again, and there could be know returning or second chances for me.

I wiped my tears and helped my brother stand, the two of us made a vow to always check each other and to have the other's back. After the pact, we got our things ready for bed for the following morning.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere, my Stasis Chamber activated, which is weird, because it had only done that one other time and that was when I first awakened. The color in the room began to fade and Niko's movements halted to a complete stop.

I looked around the room to see if Gramps was somewhere hiding, but I couldn't sense his presence, however, there were two unique mana signatures that felt familiar. I looked under my bed and saw a small white feathered dragon and a small horned demon with red dreadlocks.

"Ahhhh!" I screamed. "Who are you?! How did you get in here?!"

The two creatures crawl from under the bed to meet me face to face, "Calm down, dude, remember, we've met before," the little white dragon stated.

"We have?"

"Yeah, something like that," the small demon barked. "We don't have a lot of time, so we're going to make this quick, I'm sure you've noticed some changes happening to you".

"Yeah, I mean, I guess."

The tiny dragon approached me, "well things are changing, and one of the main changes happening is the two of us being here".

"You see, you are destined to become the next Lord of Time, and as such you have an evolution path, but you see-"

"There's two of us here," the dragon finished.

"And I'm assuming this never happens?"

The two monsters nodded their heads.

"So what do you want from me? I don't have any idea about evolutions or paths or whatever."

The tiny demon scoffed and rolled his eyes, much to the dragon's dismay, "In the coming years, you will need to choose which path you're going to take, my path, The Dragon Path,"

"Or mine, The Demon Path," the tiny demon stated.

"This is all too much," I stated with confusion. "Can we talk about this at another, I'm pretty tired, and all of this is a lot to process."

The dragon and demon exchanged a nod and agreed.

"Before we let you go, allow us to introduce ourselves!" exclaimed the small dragon.

"This is stupid," huffed the demon.

The dragon used his tail to aggressively pat the demon's back, he straightened up and cleared his throat.

"My name is Sams, and I am your dragon heritage," the tiny dragon introduced himself.

The demon bows and introduced himself, "My name is Roth, and I am your demon heritage."

The two beings began to fade as the color in the room restored.

"I'm sure we'll meet again soon, and when we do, we'll have more to talk about, I'm sure," Sams stated. The two were completely gone and the room's time was restored as if nothing happened. I brushed off the encounter and proceeded to get myself prepared for bed.

The Next Day

The following day, Iniko and I prep ourselves for the first day of class. The school day doesn't have any particular routine or schedule, minus the academic class schedule. After showering and getting dressed, we met up with Minerva and Renata at the dining hall for breakfast.

After we had our fill, we made way to our classroom and saw only four desks lined up in the front of the classroom with no sight of their teacher; each of us took our seats.

A few minutes passed and there was still no sign of the professor, when suddenly the door bursted open, "GOOD MORNING STUDENTS!! I hope you all enjoyed your rest, because today we will be going over the BASICS of mana manipulation," Professor Greenwitch shouted with a look of pure bliss on his face.

Each of us blankly stared at the professor.

"Turn those frowns upside down, and come with me on this magnificent journey of mystical academics! Now, let's take roles," he stated, attempting to connect with us; we looked around the empty room.

"Renata Timandra Faust, Minerva Cosmina Wyllt, Iniko Wyllt, and last but certainly not least Myrlin Samael Wyllt, welcome to my class and I do hope you enjoy your time here," Professor Greenwitch took a bow and proceeded to his desk. He opened the desk draw and pulled out and distributed four text books labeled A Rudimentary Lesson on Scribing Magic.

I flipped through my textbook and saw a myriad of new and interesting spells. I continued to porous the textbook and found a spell for basic gravity manipulation; looking into the spell further, I saw the requirements for the spell called for an affinity for the Wind attribute and a scribing dowel. Thinking back to the day prior, I searched my bag for the "Affinity Scroll" Lady Eos gave me. The scroll says my attribute is the D-Rank Affinity of Sand.

Professor Greenwitch pulled out the teacher's edition of the textbook and cleared his throat once more before he started his lesson, "So when it comes to Spell-Scribing, Scribing, Incantations, whatever you want to call it, there are two things you must remember, but first, let's take this lesson outside..."

Like routine, each of us groan and gather our things and made our way outside to the battlegrounds.

Moments Later at the Battlegrounds

We met with our teacher outside in the school's arena, "The first thing is making sure you have a proper conductor to produce your intended spell; this conductor is called a Scribing Dowel."

The professor then pulled a yellow feather from his hat and began his incantation, "Aspect of Gaia: Plasma Signature: True Lightning". The clouds in the sky began to merge and funnel towards the tip of the feather. The professor extended his arm forward toward a distant practice dummy and surge of blue and purple lightning emitted from the simple feather. The practice dummy ignited into flames and the instantly sky cleared, revealing the bright and harsh sun. Professor Greenwitch turned and faced us with a bashful smile; although he was a bit hard to understand, I had to admit, each of our eyes all lit up with joy and excitement.

"That was the Advanced Level Signature, True Lightning," Professor Greenwitch explained. "There are five levels of Scribing: Rudimentary, Mid-Tier, Advanced, Ultimate and Supreme and each mage has the capability to achieve at least the Advanced Level... And in some cases, there will be mages that are capable of Ultimate Level incantations; however, that power is dwarfed by the brilliance that is SUPREME Scribing".

Professor Greenwitch put the yellow feather back into the brim of his hat and clapped his hands together, "Now class! We've seen what a mature mage's power is like, it's time for you to demonstrate what you're capable of! I've provided each of you with your very own scribing dowel and I want you to try to perform the Rudimentary spell on the first page of your textbooks, Growth."

Professor Greenwitch reached for the green feather in his hat and began to scribe, "Wood Signature: Growth". Roots began to sprout from the ground and a large tree formed shading us from the sun. The professor reached in his satchel and pulled out four Scribing Dowels and gave one to each of us; we spread out and tried to scribe a simple growth spell.

As I worked on the spell, I noticed that I wasn't having any luck with manipulating the surrounding mana. I looked up and saw the same thing happening to my classmates.

Professor Greenwitch clapped his hands once and began walking away, "I just want to let you know that this assignment is time sensitive, and if you're unable to perform the spell, you'll be expelled, immediately! Now have a nice day". As he walks away and waves farewell to us.

The rest of the class groans in frustration, "Myrlin!!! How are we supposed to do this," Minerva asked me.

The other kids turned and looked at me, and I was just as lost as they were.
