Chapter 21 - Chapter 21 - Surveillance

"I want a divorce!"

Hearing Margot's words, to be honest, Josh felt a bit baffled.

If you want to divorce, just do it. Why tell me? We've only known each other for a few days, lady.

Of course, although Josh had never been married in his previous life, it didn't mean he was slow in this regard. If he really said that out loud, the goodwill he had built up with Margot so far, though not entirely gone, would surely take a big hit.

"From what you've said, it sounds like he never really loved you. He probably married you for your vast wealth. It's better to divorce him sooner rather than later. You're still young, with a bright future ahead. There's no need to waste your life on someone like him." After Margot poured out her grievances, he comforted her accordingly.

He meant what he said.

As long as Margot wasn't lying, the character of that Tony Wendis was pretty clear.

Relying on his reputation as a sports star, he had charmed the then-young Margot into a daze. When Margot's father was still alive, he behaved himself at home, completely the model husband.

But after Margot's father passed away and he felt she was easier to manipulate, things changed.

He used "competitions" as an excuse to travel the world.

The competitions were real, but outside of them, he indulged in luxury and women. His so-called results were getting worse and worse, comparable to a certain soccer team.

But he didn't care—Margot was rich.

What use did someone like that have staying by Margot's side?

Moreover, although Margot had been married to him for seven years, she was only 26… He went after her when she was just 18, and they married when she was only 19.

With Josh's comforting words, Margot's mood improved significantly compared to when she arrived, and her determination to get divorced also became firmer.

But nearing noon, she still prepared to say goodbye to Josh.

"Not staying for lunch?" Josh was a bit surprised.

"No, I have an appointment with Uncle John at noon. I want to talk to him about your gold, and I also need his help with the divorce." Margot explained.

Josh understood immediately and offered to drive her.

But Margot politely declined, saying she could handle these matters on her own, so Josh just saw her off at the door.

Watching Margot drive away, Josh returned inside, preparing to head out himself.

Due to moving and his dates with Margot the past couple of days, he hadn't accomplished much during the day, leaving only idle chatter with Daenerys during trading hours at night.

That wouldn't do.

It was time to stock up, and he also needed to prepare those books Daenerys wanted.

But just as he was about to leave, his neighbor Tommy called out to him.

"Something up, Tommy?" Josh asked curiously.

"Yes, I wanted to ask—has Ms. Margot offended anyone lately?" Tommy organized his words before asking.

"Why do you ask?" Josh was a bit confused.

"When Ms. Margot came by earlier, I noticed a black car parked across the street, seemingly watching your house. At the time, I wasn't sure, but just now, when she left, that car followed her. That's when I became certain it was targeting her." Tommy quickly explained the details and even gave Josh the license plate number.

What? Margot's being followed?

Josh was stunned by Tommy's words.

Then came a wave of worry.

Though they hadn't known each other long, and Josh admittedly had mixed motives toward her, he could still feel her affection and support.

He wasn't a heartless person and couldn't just ignore it if Margot might be in danger.

He immediately thanked Tommy, then drove off in the direction Margot had gone.

Since it had already been a while since she left, under normal circumstances, catching up to her would be impossible.

And in this era, there were no mobile phones or pagers—he had no way to contact her.

Fortunately, during their earlier conversation, Margot had mentioned the name and address of her Uncle John's jewelry company.

He figured he could catch her there or at least ask about her whereabouts.

So now Josh could only hope that if the person tailing Margot really was targeting her, they wouldn't act too quickly.

Watching Josh drive away, Tommy couldn't help but think of his younger self—also full of energy.

But he quickly shook his head. When he started out, he was a penniless refugee.

It took him decades of hard work to afford his current home.

This young man had a much better starting point.

Besides, he had once walked the despised path of the underworld.

Not comparable—not comparable at all.

Josh drove fast and even got stopped by traffic police on the way.

After all, Roosevelt's orders weren't just for show.

But in his anxious state, Josh used the power of money—whenever a cop tried to stop him, he simply handed over a hundred-dollar bill.

There were no bodycams in this era, and corruption among federal agents was rampant.

But even in any era, regular beat cops earned the least.

A hundred bucks was already more than they could usually skim in a month.

So Josh had a smooth journey and soon arrived at the building housing the jewelry company.

After circling the parking lot, he finally spotted the familiar Packard. His tense nerves relaxed slightly.

If the car was here, it meant Margot hadn't run into trouble on the way.

And this was a downtown area—if anyone wanted to make a move, they likely wouldn't do it here.

So at this moment, Margot should be safe.

With that thought, Josh didn't get out right away. Instead, he drove a bit further and parked in an unnoticed corner, then carefully circled back to observe the area around the Packard.

This was a business district parking lot, regularly patrolled by security, so he wasn't too worried about theft.

Plus, he was driving a Lincoln luxury car. Thieves usually avoided those—too hard to sell.

After some careful observation, Josh did indeed spot the black sedan but when he saw who was in it, he froze.

It was that fat Italian guy who had stolen his car a few days ago.

Why him?

Josh frowned.

He thought for a moment, then backed off.

It wasn't that he didn't want to act—it was just that cars and people passed by frequently here. Not a good spot for sneaky business.

If he was watching Margot, then he'd just watch him.

With that in mind, Josh returned to his hidden corner. After making sure no one was around, he stored his Lincoln in the system warehouse and swapped in a regular old car he had previously "borrowed" and broken into.
