Chapter 10 - The Statue

I'll upload another chapter when we reach 220 power stones

...

A Carapace Scavenger rushed towards Gilgamesh while he was lost in thought, expecting an easy kill.

The Awakened Beast received a disgusted glance from Gilgamesh. Preparing to end its life, he unleashed four portals simultaneously, while Ea slowly coalesced in his extended hand.

Sharp tips of the red corals peaked out, then sprang from [Gate of Babylon] into the air.

The corals hit their mark, piercing straight through its limbs, locking it down on the ground.

While Ea was still forming, Gilgamesh walked towards its thrashing body.

With a single world-rendering slash, the filth ceased to exist.

[You have slain an awakened beast, Carapace Scavenger.]

[You have gained the Memory: Azure Blade.]

[Your treasury grows deeper.]

Dropping the Soul Shard into [Gate of Babylon], he resumed walking at the back, along with cohort who had stopped to observe the ordeal.

Truly valuing Ea as his prized possession, Gilgamesh was unsure whether he should return the sword to his Soul Sea or keep it in hand. Both options felt wrong in their own ways.

'Wait, what will happen if I put Ea in [Gate of Babylon]?'

He wasn't entirely certain; in theory, it should work, but there were differences between his [Gate of Babylon] and the original's. Instead, it would be safer to test it out first with one of the useless swords in his collection.

Just as Gilgamesh was about to summon [Fathomling Dagger] to test it out, Sunny shouted.

"Halt!"

Nephis immediately assumed a stance, scanning their surroundings to find the threat.

"There's a group of four Carapace Scavengers directly in our path, about 500 meters away."

Gilgamesh gazed ahead, unleashing the power of [Demigod]. Four stragglers, mostly injured, were heading directly towards them, weaving through the gnarly pillars of red coral reefs.

The choice was simple.

"I'll handle three of them while you two, Nephis and Sunny, take on the remaining one."

Nephis considered his words before nodding at his command, while Sunny looked nervous but determined.

"Stay safe, Gil."

A nervous look overcame Cassie's face as he prepared to dash forward towards the group of Carapace Scavengers.

"You should be more worried about the Nightmare Creatures."

With a grin, Gilgamesh dashed forward, but not before leaving another Echo behind to protect Cassie if anything dared to approach.

Gilgamesh covered the distance within a few seconds, his golden hair whipping through the air, with Nephis and Sunny not far behind. Darting towards the middle of their group, he kicked one of them over, toppling it.

While Gilgamesh could have defeated all four of them rather easily, he did not want to stunt the future growth of his two most important subjects.

Immediately, the other three Carapace Scavengers took note of his presence. Screeching into the air, they rushed towards him as he retreated a few dozen feet to create space.

Ea, still in his hand, hummed slightly in disapproval at facing such pathetic opponents.

They rushed towards him with their pincers clicking threateningly in the air. He expertly dodged their attacks by ducking, rolling and sidestepoing them at the same time, making them collide against each other.

Gilgamesh grew rather bored after knocking them down with a kick while running circles around them. Deciding to put an end to their filthy existence for giving him a boring fight, Gilgamesh darted back before slashing.

All three of them fell to the ground, their bodies bursting as they were annihilated.

[You have slain a...]

Gilgamesh moved back before even a speck of their disgusting blood could touch him.

Opening his portal to store their Soul Shards, he looked at where Nephis and Sunny were fighting. Their battle had reached its climax as Sunny slid beneath its soft belly, slicing it open.

With that, the fourth Carapace Scavenger fell dead on the ground.

Walking back towards the group with Ea in his hand, carefully avoiding the blood, Gilgamesh complimented them along with a nod.

Once everything had calmed down, everyone returned to their assigned positions, continuing on their way towards the statue of the knight.

While walking, Gilgamesh couldn't resist his curiosity anymore and pulled out [Azure Blade]. Staring at the cheap blade, he opened a portal and dropped it inside. He watched as the sword fell in with curiosity.

[A treasure has been added to your treasury.]

[Your treasury grows deeper.]

With growing curiosity, Gilgamesh opened his Runes, staring at his Golden Fragments.

Golden Cores: [2/7]

Golden Fragments: [59/2000]

'How interesting.'

His Golden Fragments were supposed to be fifty-five after killing four Awakened Beasts, but they were fifty-nine instead. That meant he had gained four extra fragments.

Putting the rest of his useless Memories inside of [Gate of Babylon], Gilgamesh's eyes glinted with greed.

With the constant hum of the Spell's announcements ringing inside his head, he had put everything inside of [Gate of Babylon] except for [Sword of Rupture] and [Golden Armour].

The panel of his Runes opened before him as Gilgamesh stared at his Golden Fragments.

Golden Cores: [2/7]

Golden Fragments: [105/2000]

This was unexpected.

'So I gain two fragments from Dormant-ranked Memories, four from Awakened, and eight from Ascended.'

Curious to test another thing, Gilgamesh pulled [Azure Blade] out again and threw it on the ground while continuing to walk.

Within a few seconds, he turned and saw it getting picked up by [Gate of Babylon] without having to consciously think about it.

'So, normal rocks, food, water, and other stuff don't count as treasure, but Memories do?'

Wanting to test one final thing, Gilgamesh pulled [Azure Blade] out again and clenched its blade within his gauntleted fist.

With a minor exertion of force, the blade broke.

[Your memory has been destroyed.]

[Your treasury has lost a treasure.]

[Your treasury has lost its depth.]

The broken pieces of the blade fell to the ground, not being picked up by his [Gate of Babylon].

His Runes shimmered in the air again.

Golden Cores: [2/7]

Golden Fragments: [101/2000]

Breathing out in relief, Gilgamesh had expected something worse when he heard the grave voice of the Spell.

'Stupid Spell.'

He laughed aloud at his discovery. With the combined power of [Golden Rule], which gave him an Echo or Memory no matter who he killed, and [Gate of Babylon] providing him with more fragments after putting his memories inside of it, Gilgamesh would reach the class of Titan in no time at all. Indeed, in no time at all.

Cassie cast a concerned look at Gilgamesh, due to him laughing out of nowhere.

"Are you alright?"

Still grinning at his discovery, Gilgamesh stared at the blind girl with the Runes shimmering in front of his face.

"I'm more than alright, Cassie; I just discovered something very, very nice."

Nodding her head at his answer with a smile, she turned her head back towards the front.

Another thought on his mind was [Anomaly]. Gilgamesh had a little inkling of what it did, but his suspicion had been confirmed when Cassie revealed that she couldn't see him in her revelations nor his Attributes. It most likely had something to do with fate, probably exempting him directly from it.

Those thoughts left his mind as he finally focused on Ea. Since its Rank couldn't be categorized by the Spell, Gilgamesh wasn't sure how many fragments he would get in total.

The [Sword of Rupture] was carefully deposited into [Gate of Babylon]. As the portal closed behind it once it had fallen in completely, Gilgamesh waited with anticipation wondering what would happen.

For a moment, nothing happened.

[A treasure has been added to your treasury.]

[Your treasury grows [ERROR] [ERROR].]

Gilgamesh winced at the sharp, fluctuating voice of the Spell reverberating in his head.

Suddenly he grew worried; what if he had destroyed [Sword of Rupture]? With tension coursing through him at the thought of the Spell getting Ea destroyed, he opened his Runes.

Golden Cores: [2/7]

Golden Fragments: [101/2000]

His fragments were at the same amount.

Scrolling down, Gilgamesh looked at his Memories.

Memories: [Golden Armor], [Sword of Rupture], [Gloom-Weaver Hood], [Gloom-Weaver Hood], [Gloom-Weaver Hood], [Fathomling Dagger], [Fathomling Mace], [Fathomling Sword], [Fathomling Gauntlet], [Echo-Stone], [Tendril Shiv], [Abyssal Spineblade], [Azure Axe], [Azure Mace].

All his Memories were there, even [Sword of Rupture]. Quickly opening a portal, he tried to summon Ea into his hands.

The golden portal opened normally, and Ea fell into his hands. Gilgamesh immediately felt relieved, knowing that his stupidity hadn't destroyed it.

...

With Ea back in his hands, Gilgamesh gazed at the dipping Sun. With the towering statue of the knight before them, they had managed to arrive with barely any trouble at all.

Perhaps Sunny's [Fated] and his [Golden Rule] were battling it out in some dimension, vying for superiority.

Within a few minutes, they were standing at the feet of the colossal statue, looking up.

Gazing at it, Gilgamesh had to admit that whoever had carved it did so exceptionally well. A sudden thought popped into his mind.

The time I got reincarnated as Michelangelo in Shadow Slave.

Chuckling at the thought, Gilgamesh moved to the front.

"Alright everyone, jump into the portal."

Sunny jumped in without hesitation after hearing his words, his Echo following with Cassie sitting on top.

After looking at Gilgamesh for a minute, Nephis jumped in as well. It was a significant accomplishment for him, considering she had lived a life on the run from assassins and was now jumping into a portal that only he could open.

Without waiting any longer, Gilgamesh opened a portal at the top of the two-hundred-meter statue and teleported all of them just as the dark sea was rolling in wave after wave.

All four of them fell out of different portals simultaneously.

He walked towards the edge of the neck of the statue, when he reached he looked around trying to find the corpse of the Corrupted Devil, Gilgamesh caught a glimpse of the dead body of the huge shark-like creature before it was swallow up by the dark sea.

Turning away, he also removed the food and water from [Gate of Babylon] at centre of the platform. With all of them being hungry they began to eat without much fanfare, silently.

...

While sitting at the center of the circular platform on the neck of the gigantic statue, Gilgamesh finally decided to absorb his Soul Shards.

All twenty-three of his Soul Shards dropped from the portal, falling on the floor one after another while Sunny and Nephis watched incredulously at the sheer quantity.

After some quick calculations, Gilgamesh took eight of the Soul Shards for himself and gave five each to the other three. The reason he was doing this was simple: Gilgamesh was completely bored.

He hadn't encountered a single powerful Nightmare Creature all this time. Killing them all was pathetically easy; he was giving out the shards as a donation in hopes that at they could grow powerful enough to give him a good fight.

At this point, Gilgamesh was fairly certain that he could even beat low-level Masters.

He had given Sunny the Soul Shards so that her cover wouldn't be blown by her inability to consume them.

It was lonely at the top.

Gilgamesh would never have expected he, too, would be thinking this one day, alongside the overpowered characters of fiction.

Didn't Aizen create Ichigo so that he could get a worthy opponent?

Then again, he had never watched Bleach.

All three of the girls looked at him in surprise as he gave them his Soul Shards. Gilgamesh shrugged his shoulders.

"The top brass of my future clan cannot be weak."

Not wasting more time, he started absorbing them, hearing the constant ping of the Spell as he did so.

Once he was done absorbing the Soul Shards, along with the cohort except for Sunny, he got up and started stretching his bones. Yawning, Gilgamesh opened his portal and dropped the beds.

"Wake me up when it's my turn to watch."

Swaggering over to his bed, he dismissed the outer part of his armor and laid down.

Now that Gilgamesh had some time to think, he realized that [Golden Armour] had at least two Enchantments that he knew of. It could amplify his voice and shine brightly if he wanted it to. He had noticed this on the first day in Dream Realm but he hadn't gotten the chance to think about it till now.

There were probably a lot more that he had not yet discovered.

Closing his eyes, he fell asleep.

...

Gilgamesh woke up to the sound of Sunny's voice informing him it was his turn. Getting up, he looked around.

Nephis and Cassie were sleeping while Sunny was standing at the edge of the circular platform.

"The wind might blow you away if you stand over there, Sunny."

Smirking at her as she looked at him, annoyed for him making fun of her height.

"You'll catch me if I do, wouldn't you?"

He got confused by her mischievous look, Gilgamesh wasn't sure if she was making fun of him or flirting.

"Of course I will."

Nodding his head, he stood beside her, staring at the dark sky of Forgotten Shore.

Suddenly, Sunny picked up her seaweed bag and showed him the Soul Shards inside.

"How about you teach me how to use a sword, and I'll give you all the Soul Shards I collect on the way to the castle?"

Gilgamesh stared blankly at her face before bursting out laughing.

She was giving him back the Soul Shards he had given her just a few hours ago. He held her face gently in his hands while staring into her eyes in amusement.

"Ah, but the thing is, Sunny, even I have only just started to learn how to use a sword properly myself."

Dropping his hands from her blushing and stunned face, he turned back towards the sea.

"It would be better if you ask Nephis instead; after all, Nephis and I used to spend all our nights together."

Sunny nodded her head jerkily and started walking towards her bed before pausing.

"Wait! Why did you two used to spend your nights together?"

"To train, of course! Tsk, tsk, get your head out of the gutter, Sunny."

Gilgamesh laughed as she hurriedly went back towards her bed to sleep before he could force her to say something embarassing due to her flaw.

Turning back while sighing, he began sitting down on the ground, preparing for another boring night.

...
