Chapter 23 - Chapter 022

Chapter 23: Regrets Too Late

After the main gate of the base closed, Uncle Li and Li Hongyuan continued to keep watch from the observation tower.

The crowd at the base of the wall looked at the closed gate with a sense of despair, but they had no way to change the situation.

The 6-meter high wall, equivalent to two stories, was topped with a dense high-voltage electric fence. Unlike the residential electric fences seen before, this one carried real high voltage!

There was absolutely no way to force entry!

The crowd heard zombies seemingly gathering behind them, and panic immediately set in. Although they had numbers on their side, without a core leader, even a large group becomes disorganized.

Why were Li Yu's uncle Li Hongda, Lai Dongsheng, and even young Li Hang able to face and bravely kill zombies? It was because Li Yu was fearlessly leading from the front.

A fearless leader can inspire many to become braver. But if the leader is terrified, those below will have even less confidence.

Why do generals remain calm and composed even in the face of great difficulties during war? It's because by staying steady, they give their troops the belief to fight.

Once people have a core leader and belief, they become unstoppable and fearless.

Li Yu's belief was to protect his family in this damned apocalypse!

Li Yu's most admired hero once said: "Do it yourself, clothe and feed yourself well!"

In this apocalypse, Li Yu hadn't thought that far ahead yet. He just wanted to seriously and diligently protect his family and make up for past regrets.

He didn't ask for help from anyone, so he had to save himself!

However, this group outside had conflicting motives. The village secretary who led them had always been profit-driven even before the apocalypse, let alone after.

The zombies were slowly approaching. There weren't many, only about twenty, but they caused the crowd to scatter in chaos.

The village secretary looked at Liu Weimin like he was seeing a savior and said, "Officer, hurry and shoot them with your gun!"

As he ran towards the riot control vehicle, the villagers nearby saw his actions and instantly reacted, also running towards the vehicle.

Seeing the actions of the village secretary and his group, Liu Weimin felt utterly exasperated.

Li Yu's group of five could hack and kill their way through a horde of zombies. While these people didn't have such good weapons, they at least had kitchen knives and hoes.

One person could take care of one zombie! This was a typical case of being fierce in internal struggles but weak against external threats!

Looking at the bullets left in his submachine gun, Liu Weimin felt there weren't many. As the zombies drew closer, he raised his gun and opened fire.

Rat-tat-tat.

The zombies fell like wheat being harvested, but they had no consciousness and felt no fear. Hearing the gunshots, the zombies seemed stimulated and surrounded them even more frantically.

Liu Weimin saw his daughter holding an axe nearby. While continuing to fire, he shouted, "Quick, get on the riot control vehicle!"

But when he looked towards the vehicle, he found it was already packed full!

Damn it!

Liu Weimin cursed inwardly, but the zombies in front of him wouldn't wait.

Since Liu Weimin was standing quite far forward, and Liu Huamei was beside him, while the other villagers had retreated to the vehicle, this left only the two of them facing the zombies.

Click.

Liu Weimin's heart sank. Not good, he was out of bullets.

Looking straight ahead, he saw only four zombies left and breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, there weren't many left.

He forcefully smashed the head of a zombie charging straight at him with the now-empty gun barrel, causing brain matter to splatter.

In an instant, he swiftly drew a military knife from the holster on his thigh and stabbed another zombie beside him.

Squelch! It had to be said, Liu Weimin's combat ability was quite strong.

But the other two zombies had already charged up to Liu Huamei. She swung her axe at one zombie.

However, another zombie from the side had also pounced towards her!

At this moment, Liu Huamei's axe had just struck one zombie, and her body simply couldn't react fast enough. Meanwhile, Liu Weimin was in the middle of stabbing a zombie with his knife.

In this critical moment, in the blink of an eye, the zombie was about to bite Liu Huamei.

It was so close!

Liu Huamei turned her head to see the crowd still fighting to get onto the riot control vehicle, and a flash of despair crossed her mind!

"Huamei!" Seeing this scene, Liu Weimin's eyes bulged with rage!

The crowd on the riot control vehicle was still in an uproar, arguing about getting on board!

Whoosh!

The sound of an arrow in flight!

It was Li Hongda! He was seen shooting at that zombie with a crossbow.

Thud! Thump!

The zombie fell to the ground, and Liu Huamei was frozen in shock.

Liu Weimin hurried forward and quickly checked, finding that Liu Huamei hadn't been injured. He immediately breathed a sigh of relief.

He then looked at the crowd with some hatred, and towards Li Hongda on the wall with gratitude in his eyes.

He felt some regret, and also understood why Li Yu wouldn't let these people into the base. These people had no conscience!

But he couldn't bring himself to lose face by going to Li Yu now and asking him to let them in.

Moreover, Li Yu hadn't yet indicated whether he would let him in or not.

Sigh! Forget it, it doesn't matter if we don't go in!

Looking at the crowd, Liu Weimin sighed. How had the people become so impure? How had they become like this!

Due to the continued gunfire just now, which was quite loud, it seemed that more zombies from further away had been attracted.

Liu Weimin didn't stand on ceremony now. He grabbed his daughter and quickly rushed towards the riot control vehicle!

At this point, the village secretary was already sitting in the front passenger seat of the riot control vehicle, with the tattooed youth in the driver's seat.

At the back door, people were constantly being pulled down and others were rushing up.

The two in the driver's seats were about to start the vehicle and leave, but when they tried to start it, they were dumbfounded - there was no key!

The key was with Liu Weimin. Seeing Liu Weimin charging over, the village secretary immediately tugged at the tattooed youth, pointed behind, and then got out of the car.

"Officer, well done! Thank you for protecting us like this! Let's quickly leave this place!" he said, vacating the front passenger seat.

Liu Weimin had clearly seen the two about to start the car without the key just moments ago.

Thinking about how not a single person had come down to help him earlier, while the village secretary had run the fastest, his expression immediately darkened. He was righteous and kind, but he wasn't that stupid!

He sat in the car without courtesy and had his daughter sit in the front passenger seat.

At the back door, the tattooed youth who had gotten out first had, at the village secretary's hint, first fiercely pushed the crowd away, then pulled down two people who were sitting by the door.

The village secretary took advantage of this opening and nimbly climbed in like a monkey. The tattooed youth followed suit.

A riot control vehicle with a capacity of 8 people was now crammed with nearly 20, with only the front driver's area having some space, while the back was packed tight, faces pressed against each other.
