Cherreads

Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: The Rain Kissed Them First

Her feet slapped against the wet pavement.Bare.Bleeding.She didn't care.

Her eyes scanned every passing car, every alley shadow, every corner he could've disappeared into.

And then—she saw him.

Across the street.Soaked.Still.Staring up at the sky like it owed him an answer.

She ran.

"Don't you dare walk away from me!" she screamed.

She didn't know when her voice broke—only that it did.

She didn't know if she wanted to scream at him,or hold him,or break down in front of him just so someone finally understood the storm inside her.

Because she wasn't just chasing a man.

She was chasing the part of herself that believed love didn't always mean pain.

like the sky had finally cracked from the pressure of all the unsaid things between them.

He turned.

And the look on his face—it was like watching a dam burst in reverse. All the water came in instead of out.And he was drowning right in front of her.

He whispered her name.

Just once. But it felt like a lifetime trying to break through the space between them.

She reached for him.Fists pounding against his chest.

"You think walking away fixes this?! You think leaving me alone again was fair?!"

He didn't defend himself.

He just cupped her face—gently, reverently.

"I thought I didn't deserve to stay."

And then—he kissed her.

Desperate.Wet.Tasting like apology and agony and all the years they lost.

She broke the kiss first, eyes wet—not from rain.

"Why do I feel like… this isn't the first time we've said goodbye?"

He looked at her, frozen.

"Because it's not."He reached into his coat—and pulled out a faded marriage certificate.

With both their names.Dated seven years ago.

"We've done this before. You just don't remember the vows."
