Kaito glanced at the Four Kage. Under the pressure of his Rinnegan, not one of them dared to raise their eyes to meet his.
Minato pointed at Madara, who was tangled in Kaito's hair, and asked,
"Kaito, what do you plan to do with Uchiha Madara?"
Kaito thought for a moment and replied,
"That's not something you need to worry about. Take him back to Konoha first."
Saying that, Kaito used his hair to roll Madara toward Minato. Minato hurriedly reached out and caught him.
Watching Minato handle him so carefully, Kaito let out a light chuckle and said,
"Where are Obito and Kakashi? They haven't shown up yet?"
Minato shook his head; a worried look crossed his face.
"Obito took Kakashi into another dimension. Even my Flying Thunder God can't get us there."
Kaito considered using Yomotsu Hirasaka to slip into Kamui-space and see what those two were up to. The war was over now — any grudges should be settled quickly.
Suddenly the space twisted. Obito dragged Kakashi out, tossing him into the clearing.
Kakashi's clothes were ragged, scorched in many places. Bruises and dark marks marred his face—he'd clearly been through a fierce beating.
Compared to Kakashi, Obito looked much better off. Though he bore some wounds, with White Zetsu cells his injuries were hardly serious. And the smug expression on his face made it obvious he'd enjoyed himself in that other space — whatever had happened there, it hadn't been pleasant for Kakashi.
In truth, it wasn't anything extraordinary: Obito had simply beaten Kakashi up.
In the anime Obito was shown losing to Kakashi in Kamui-space, but that was clearly intentional — he only wanted Kakashi to remove the curse mark over his heart. Now that Kaito had already removed Obito's curse mark and the truth was out, Obito had no regrets fighting Kakashi, and victory came naturally to him.
After all, Obito was Madara's only true disciple. In taijutsu, ninjutsu, and dōjutsu he was on a different level from Kakashi. He also had mastery over Yin–Yang release — how could present-day Kakashi beat him?
Besides, Obito harbored no remorse toward Kakashi; if anything, there was a grudge. He'd long wanted to beat Kakashi up, and this was a small wish of his fulfilled.
Obito casually threw Kakashi onto the ground. Kakashi rolled, then struggled to his feet.
Minato moved forward to intervene, but Kaito stopped him. "Don't interfere in those two's business."
"But Kakashi looks like he got beaten pretty badly…"
"Relax. He won't die."
Minato fell silent.
Obito shot Kaito a look of gratitude, then crouched and grabbed Kakashi by the collar. He leaned his face close and said,
"Kakashi, you're just too weak now. You can't even beat someone like me."
Kakashi's mask had been half destroyed. He gave a wry smile.
"Obito, you were never—"
"Tch. You're still the same as always. Annoying just to look at!" Obito cut him off, sounding bored. He let go of Kakashi and rose to his feet, then looked toward Madara, who Minato was propping up.
His expression hardened. Without turning his head, he said to Kakashi,
"You should know now: Rin's death was entirely Madara's doing. Seeing him like this, I really want to kill him."
Kakashi said nothing, only watching Obito quietly.
Obito continued, "But he was defeated by Kaito-sama. I don't have the right to kill him."
He clenched his fists, voice full of hatred.
"One day I'll surpass him, and then I'll kill him."
Madara suddenly opened his eyes. He cast Obito a glance and silently shook his head.
That shake was a full-throttle insult to Obito. Veins bulged on Obito's forehead; his gaze at Madara was like a predator sizing up prey.
Kaito had seen enough. He spoke, "Alright. Whatever needs doing, we'll discuss it back in Konoha."
At Kaito's words Obito quieted immediately. He walked up to Minato, forcing himself not to look at Madara, and said in a low voice,
"Sensei, I'm a sinner. When we get back I'll turn myself in and go to prison. Until I've atoned for my crimes, I won't come out."
Minato looked at Obito with a complicated expression. To be honest, he had already forgiven Obito — as had Kushina. They both knew Obito had been deceived and used. Now the three of them were finally happy as a family again; they held no hatred for him.
But Obito couldn't forgive himself. He only wanted to atone. Even though Minato kept trying to counsel him and tell him to stop dwelling on those events, Obito was determined to go to prison.
Helpless, Minato cast a pleading glance at Kaito. He knew Kaito's words carried more weight with Obito than his own.
Kaito pondered for a moment and said, "Don't rush to prison. There's one thing I want to ask of you first."
Obito immediately answered, "Kaito-sama, tell me what it is. I'll do my best."
A faint smile curved Kaito's mouth.
"Don't be so worked up. It's not a big thing. I want you to find someone for me."
"What kind of person?"
"He's a monk named Jigen."
At the mention of Jigen, Kaito narrowed his eyes.
Jigen's true identity was Ōtsutsuki Isshiki — the unlucky one who was ambushed by Kaguya and then became host to the Ten-Tails. Ever since Kaito returned to the world of the Hokages, he'd been using his network to locate Jigen, but the monk seemed to have sensed him and concealed his presence.
So Kaito planned to send Obito — who possessed Kamui — to look for him. Kamui's survival capabilities were unmatched; even if Jigen discovered him, Obito could slip away.
Obito nodded. He didn't ask what Kaito intended to do with the man. He replied decisively,
"Understood, Kaito-sama. Once I find him, do you want me to bring him back?"
"No. I only need to know his location. And remember — do not engage him. He's very strong."
At that, the faces of the Four Kage and everyone nearby, including Minato and even Kaguya, changed. Curiosity about this monk Jigen flared. If Kaito labeled someone "very strong," his power could not be doubted. But if he was so formidable, why had no one ever heard of him?
Obito was surprised too, but excitement quickly took over. For him, Kaito entrusting him with the task of finding such a terrifyingly strong figure was an expression of trust.
Completing that assignment would also ease the guilt in his heart.
He nodded hard. "I've got it!"
