Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: The Solharbor Gambit

The first rays of sunlight pierced the twilight above Ordran, casting a warm, golden hue across the realm that now stood as a bastion of darkness and dominion. Atop the Sovereign's Tower, Lord Rael of the Twilight Dominion stood in full battle regalia—his twilight-forged armor glinting like obsidian steel beneath the morning sun. From this vantage point, he watched thousands of soldiers march in perfect synchrony across the city's expansive training grounds.

It was a sight that would stir pride in any ruler's heart. Abyssal Paladins marched with resolute grace, Sentinel Mages chanted low, harmonic incantations, and the fearsome Twilight Riders stood vigilant atop their scaled mounts. What had once been a fledgling domain born from shadows and ruins was now a rising force destined to shake the continent.

Behind him, the steady footsteps of Kaelene echoed, her presence now commanding after taking on the role of Scoutmaster-General. Dressed in sleek black armor inscribed with stealth runes, she radiated efficiency and sharp intellect.

"You called us early, my Lord," she said, her amber eyes glinting in the low light.

Rael nodded, arms crossed. "The Solharbor Triumvirate is fractured. We strike not with brute force, but with precision. Start with Velharn—smallest, weakest, and ruled by an insecure fool."

A ripple of dark energy shimmered in the air before Azura manifested beside him, her spectral wings flickering with arcs of lightning. Her powers had grown significantly since the Abyssal Heart awakened within her.

"I suggest we show them a sliver of what we are capable of," Azura said, smirking. "Let them surrender out of awe."

Rael considered that and then nodded. "But we don't slaughter unless we must. Diplomacy buys more loyalty than bloodshed."

The chambers of Duke Galvain were stifling, not because of the heat, but from the suffocating fear that clung to every corner. The duke himself, once a man of bombast and arrogance, now paced with a nervous tremor. Rumors of the Twilight Sovereign's conquest of the Abyss had reached his ears like a foul wind carrying word of a rising god.

"They say his army rides beasts conjured from the void," his spymaster said.

"They say his women breathe fire and dance in shadows," muttered a trembling court mage.

But before their speculations could devolve further, the heavy oaken doors creaked open—and in walked a single figure.

Seris.

Clad in a flowing robe stitched from voidsilk, her midnight hair floated around her like a dark halo. Her mere presence extinguished torches and silenced every voice. At her side, she carried a sealed crystal orb—twilight pulsating within.

"I come bearing a message," Seris said, her voice smooth as velvet but edged with steel. "From the Sovereign of Twilight."

Duke Galvain scoffed at first—just for a moment—before his eyes were drawn to the orb.

"What is that?" he asked.

"A relic," Seris answered, setting it on the floor. "It blesses the land, empowers your soldiers, and extends your life span. In exchange, you open your gates and kneel."

"And if I refuse?"

Seris smiled faintly. "Then I burn this palace to cinders and shatter your soul into a thousand screaming echoes."

Galvain fell to his knees.

Later that evening, under the calming petals of blooming soulblossom trees, Rael reclined in the garden's serenity. Beside him sat Elira, now visibly pregnant. Her usually sharp demeanor had softened, and her aura pulsed gently, resonating with the new life within.

"She kicks when you speak," Elira said, guiding his hand over her belly. "She already knows your voice."

"A daughter, then?" Rael murmured.

"She told me," Elira said, a small smile gracing her lips. "In my dream. Her name is Alara."

Kaelene entered silently, flanked by Azura. The two women sat on either side of Rael, forming a circle of power, affection, and trust.

Kaelene reached for his hand. "Velharn was easy. The next cities won't be."

"I welcome the challenge," Azura added. "Let them resist. I've missed tearing through zealots."

Rael chuckled softly. "We're not just building an empire of power, Azura. We're building a legacy. Alara will inherit this world, and she won't do it through tyranny alone."

"But she'll know how to defend it," Kaelene said with a nod.

A soft pulse echoed through the garden—a signal crystal vibrating on Rael's bracer.

He raised his arm and channeled mana into the device. A glowing map projected in the air, centered on the Holy City of Viremont.

The city of Viremont stood as a monolith of faith and resistance. Surrounded by high alabaster walls inscribed with ancient prayers, it had repelled demon hordes, rogue mages, and even dragons. Now, it faced something far more terrifying: the Twilight Dominion.

Rael's army approached slowly, like a dark tide. Massive siege beasts dragged enchanted battering rams, and floating warships crackled with abyssal energy. War priests on the walls chanted fervently, bolstering the city's holy barriers.

Rael stood on a raised platform, gazing at the city with calculating eyes.

"Seris, ready your diplomats. Azura, I want every defense point mapped. Kaelene, dispatch shadow scouts inside the walls. We'll give them a chance—just one—to yield."

Kaelene saluted. "And if they don't?"

Rael's eyes gleamed. "Then we turn their prayers into screams."

Rael turned back to his army.

"The age of fire and stars begins now," he declared. "Let even the gods remember our name."
