Chapter 17 - Chapter 16: The Battle Behind the Curtain

Leo sat back on the velvet cushion, the half-eaten fruit still resting in Anne's trembling hands.

Her face flushed as she peeked up at him nervously, but Leo no longer paid her any mind.

His thoughts had plunged deep into a forgotten memory from his past life—a name, no, two names, had surfaced like ghosts from a misty grave.

"Rio Bladecrest and Roxanne Bladecrest..." he muttered aloud.

The names struck like thunder.

Twin prodigies of the Bladecrest Clan. Siblings born on the same day, same hour, same breath.

Together, they moved like mirrored flames on the battlefield, swift and precise, each flowing into the other's rhythm.

They were the hope of the Bladecrest clan—perfect harmony, devastating might, and a terrifying display of dual mastery.

"And yet... they fell."

He gritted his teeth.

In his past life, they were defeated. By *Alex*.

But Leo knew the truth. He remembered the controversy that had rippled across the realm when a video of the fight went viral.

Some random rogue cultivator had apparently caught it from a distance, shaky hands capturing the decisive moments.

But not long after it surfaced, the original uploader had vanished without a trace.

Now Leo was sure that Alex had orchestrated everything.

The video was edited, polished to show him as a heroic savior and a flawless warrior.

A lie.

A manufactured legend.

But Leo had seen the unedited version.

[ The True Battle: Rio and Roxanne Bladecrest vs. Alex Bladecrest ]

The battlefield was a scorched valley, cracked earth and shattered boulders littering the ground.

Storm clouds gathered above, thick with spiritual energy.

The air shimmered with tension.

Alex stood tall, clad in his usual silver-blue armor with his family crest gleaming proudly.

His sword was already drawn, a smirk twisting his lips.

"Rio, Roxanne," he said mockingly, "Didn't expect you both to come at once."

"You stole what was ours," Roxanne growled, her emerald twin swords glinting. "We'll reclaim our honor."

"For the clan," Rio added calmly, his golden short blade resting on his shoulder.

"You don't deserve the Bladecrest name."

They moved.

A blur of motion. Roxanne shot forward like a spear of lightning, her swords dancing like leaves in the wind.

Rio flanked from the side, a feint that became a deadly spin.

Alex barely parried, the clash ringing like thunder across the valley.

Roxanne leapt, twin blades spinning in a deadly arc.

Rio dashed in low, slashing toward Alex's legs.

*Clang!* *Slice!* *Clash!*

Their synergy was terrifying. When Roxanne struck high, Rio went low.

When Alex blocked one, the other was already in motion.

Their footwork was flawless, rhythm perfect.

For several minutes, Alex was entirely on the defensive, forced back step by step.

But Alex wasn't stupid.

He had done his research. He had learned their weakness: *separation*.

"Let me show you something special!" Alex suddenly shouted, releasing a blinding wave of energy.

Roxanne covered her eyes. Rio jumped back.

It was nothing more than a flash bomb—non-lethal, but effective.

When their vision cleared, Alex had already moved.

He hurled a purification blast, a technique reserved for Aetherwind clan members—something he shouldn't have had access to.

"That bastard... someone *taught* him," Leo muttered, rage boiling in his chest.

The blast struck Roxanne square in the chest, not enough to kill, but enough to hurl her back and fracture her ribs.

Rio's eyes widened in horror.

"Roxanne!"

He moved to her side.

Alex grinned.

"Just as I thought... you're weaker apart."

As Rio knelt to protect his sister, Alex struck. He didn't come at him from the front.

*He used a shadow step technique*, vanishing from view and reappearing directly behind him.

The strike was brutal, uncalled for.

*Slice!*

Blood spurted from Rio's back as Alex's blade plunged in.

Roxanne screamed.

"*No!!*"

She pushed herself up, fury blazing in her eyes. But it was too late.

Alex turned, parried her weakened assault, and delivered the final blow with another purification blast.

The twins collapsed together, blood pooling beneath them.

Alex stood over them, panting.

He wiped the blood from his blade and looked around.

No one had witnessed the truth.

He dragged their bodies slightly apart.

Took several staged photos with spiritual light flaring in the background.

Later, he released the video. One where he looked like the victim, the underdog, the *hero* who took down the traitorous twins.

He claimed the title.

He claimed their honor.

Leo's nails dug into his palms as he finished reliving the memory.

He remembered how the video had been dissected in forums, how even the elders eventually accepted it as the truth.

But Leo—*Leo knew.*

"Rio... Roxanne..." he whispered. "In this life, I will make sure your name is restored."

The flames of hatred burned anew in his heart.

He would find the Bladecrest twins before Alex ever met them.

He would warn them.

Strengthen them.

And when the time came... he would unleash them *against* Alex.

That bastard wouldn't know what hit him.

Anne looked up from where she stood, worried.

"Master Leo? Are you alright?"

Leo blinked, dragged from the storm of his thoughts.

Then he smirked and reached out, gently patting her head.

"Nothing to worry about, Anne. I just remembered a very... amusing story."

The cute loli maid nodded slowly, though she looked confused.

Leo leaned back, his eyes glowing faintly.

It's time I start rewriting the legends.
