"Have lunch with me," the girl said.
Michael looked up, confused. He hadn't expected the girl to reach out to him, not with his reputation as a pushover. He wanted to decline, he worried that Selene's popularity would dwindle if she was seen with him, but he didn't know how to turn her down.
He dropped his head and nodded slowly.
Whispers erupted from all sides of the classroom.
"Is she serious?"
"Why him?"
Micheal didn't need to look up to know that everyone was staring at them. But unlike him, Selene didn't seem to care. She took his hand and led him to her friends.
"Guys, Michael will be eating with us from now on," she declared loud enough for everyone to hear.
The girl turned to look at Trent who flinched. Now that she had declared Michael as one of them, she thought that Trent wouldn't dare to touch him for any reason. In her way, this was her gratitude for his presence in the old gym room, and her apology for looking the other way for so long.
