Chapter 48 - Who Is He?

Radagon

The cage was cold. It was a bar of painful metallic feeling that surrounded him, and yet it never existed at all. They were constructs of his own emotions, used as seals around his very being. The greater her felt, the firmer the cell he was bound in. Whomever this knight was was far more than she said. This was no spell of these lands.

A fist clanged against bars that weren't there and yet still left his knuckles, feeling numb, aching, hot, and somehow cold. It was an awful state that every desire to escape became another bar, and yet if he managed to destroy the bars, he would be left with no desire to leave. It had taken him a month to parse together its workings only to find they left no weakness.

He stewed for a few moments before sitting down, resting his head against a wall that felt like nothing as he released a long breath. A hand rested quietly on his chest, quietly remembering the last time a hand had touched him in any way aside from violence.

Last years of the Unity between Caria and Leyndell.

He walked down the long halls as he breathed in grim frustration. He had been ordered by her to dismantle things. To destroy HIS union with his Queen. His Rennala... It wasn't fair.

"My king?" He heard her voice as he turned gently, gazing at her on the path that crossed from the grand stairwell to the courtyard above him. Her chambers were just above. Their chambers...

"Rennala... we.. we need to talk."

"What about?" She covered herself with her gown as she descended towards him

He choked quietly, barely able to form words. Barely able to even thing straight. Her hand rested on his back, caressing through the red hair he so deeply hated, and yet she had given him so much admiration for. He felt whatever tears he had hoped to hold back begin to break through. His mind fissured in pain, and for a moment, they could not even remember their name.

Then, he began to harden. He grunted and turned with a rude dismissal of her hand. "It... it is over. I have been called back to the capital. I... I am to anull our..."

Rennala stared at him, her eyes practically pleading that was some kind of sick joke, but his heart hardened as he knew that the greater will surely knew better. His mind briefly reeled in suffering as he choked out the words, "I am leaving you, Rennala. It is over. I have grown tired and weary of you. I am going to marry Queen Marika."

He watched in horror even as their heart broke as Rennala slowly began to twist into an agonized face. She plead, she wept, she clutched to his arm in desperation. Yet he did not relent. He shoved her aside as heartlessly as he could manage, even as their heart shook in pain. He turned and began to stride down those long stairs quietly. "I... left you a final present in the library... I.. I am sorry."

The last sound they heard was the burning scream of their beloved queen as she wept to the moon, and he rode away to Leyndell in the dark of night.

He gripped his head as the memory felt wrong. It felt twisted. It hurt. It burned. Something was not right. Something was inside, and it hurt worse than these terrible bars. His fist cracked against them as he roared in pain while a glimmer of pure golden light flashed through his eyes, and he slipped back under into the darkness. He gripped his faith to the greater will and prayed as he fell under that they would whisk away their suffering soon.

Rennala

There was a flicker in the moonlit queen's eyes. A brief shimmer of something as a sound rippled through the flow of magic that only her ears could catch. Her lips felt so dry for a moment, and her head ached as something felt like it was burrowing deeper. Something was running.

Running? Why was something.. With a startled fright, the Queen of Caria dropped the amber egg and gripped on to her own head. In an instant, the little children turned to golden dust, and she screamed as she fought for concentration. Something was in her head, something that had driven her mad for centuries, and she had been so blinded by grief that she let it. She let it sinks it talons and consume her to nearly oblivion.

"You...! T-the little children... My daughter... my husband... my grief... you.. you.. h-have been.. feeding on it... Using me..! You are a madness...!!!" She shrieked in pain as she fought for control, twisting and turning across her countless pillows before hitting the wooden floor with a painful crack of her head. Bleeding from the temple, she struggled to her feet.

"I will... be.. a puppet... no LONGER!" With a forming and slamming of her great staff, a pulse of pure magoc flooded across her brain. Flowed in and out of each little artifact and memory before a small orange glimmer formed and began to burn her left eye. She gripped her eyes as she felt this thing begin to try and burrow into the front of her brain, and she made the terrible decision.

A scream tore across Caria that night unlike any had heard for damn near a millenia. Yet, soon after, the moon glowed more beautifully than it had ever before.

The erdtree itself began to glimmer less brightly that night. The knight looked up from the quiet ritual she had been performing, a secret she had not shared with any as she slowly tucked away a set of beads made from obsidian and garnished with a gem resembling a small galaxy.

She rose to her feet and watched as more and more leaves began to fall from the Erdtree and put a smile upon the knight's face. "It's losing its grip on these lands... It's getting angry."

That smile soon turned to a smirk. "Good."

She turned, rushing down the, in her opinion, far too many stairs and leaped across the last few to the room where her beloved queen slept. She rushed over to her, slowing once she got close and sat down beside her resting form. "Soon.. my love... soon.. you will be out of there. I can feel it." She tenderly grasped her hand, and rested it against her forehead before planting a tender kiss on her wrist.

"Soon."
