Evelisse's opponent was a boy with freckles and enormous confidence. "Why did the royal baker cry?"
"I don't know," she said, blinking innocently.
"Because he kneaded the dough too hard!"
Several noble ladies in the crowd politely covered their mouths with gloves.
Evelisse tilted her head, narrowed her eyes, and said with perfect solemnity:
"…That joke was half-baked, my lord. Perhaps next time, try rising to the occasion?"
Then she gave a dainty curtsy and winked.
He snorted.
Laughed.
And fell over.

The crowd was roaring now.
