Avery's heart was racing as Julian started the car , the engine roaring to life . They peeled out out of there , leaving the darkness and the figure behind .
As they sped down the highway , Avery felt a sense of relief wash over her . They had escaped , at least for now .
But Julian's expression was grim , his eyes fixed on the rear view mirror . " We're not safe yet ," he said . " We need to find a place to hide ."
Avery nodded , her mind racing with fear . Where could they go ? Who could they trust ?
As they drove , the darkness seemed to press in around them , the shadows deepening and twisting into menacing forms .
Avery felt like they were being herded , driven toward some unknown destination . And she knew that they couldn't outrun the darkness forever .
Suddenly , Julian slammed on the brakes , and Avery felt herself thrown forward . They skidded to a stop on the side of the road , the engine sputtering .
Avery's heart was racing as she turned to Julian . " What's wrong ?" she asked .
Julian's expression was grim . " We're out of gas ," he said . " Again ."
Avery's eyes widened as she looked around . They were stranded , alone and vulnerable , with no way to escape .
And then , Avery heard it . The sound of footsteps , crunching through the gravel on the side of the road .
They were not alone .
