Chapter 6 - Nursing family

 Oh gosh!....this can't be happening.

I turned around to look at those brown eyes that seems to scream nothing but beauty.

"Hello!!... Earth to you" he waved at me, probably wondering what I was thinking about.

I was staring for about 30 seconds and I only managed to get myself back when he called out to me.

"ummm....sorry. what were you saying?" I responded looking embarrassed.

So much embarrassment for one day.

"I'll go first, my name is Edmund and you are?" He asked.

"i'm Jennifer, it's a pleasure to meet you" I answered.

"You know you make everything sound like a business meeting" He laughed.

His laughter rang out like a sonorous music. A tune I kept on replaying in my head. I couldn't help but join in, myself.

"I'll call you Jenny, if that's okay with you" he said and touched his curly hair.

I couldn't help but check him out immediately. He had an ebony black, curly hair, nearly trimmed nails, slender fingers, long lashes for a guy,a flat nose -it wasn't really my vibe but it suits him perfectly - he had a broad chest, he was tall enough to see the middle of my head. Perfect brown eyes -it felt like I could see through them- long legs and a type of....

"Jenny?...." He called snapping me out of my thoughts.

"Yeah?" I snapped out of my daydreaming.

"You really have to work on your attentiveness. I mean, no surprise that the lecturer noticed you" he added with a smirk.

" Well, it wasn't my fault it was my friend's." I defended myself. " And yours too" I mumbled.

" Well, it's not your fault, I mean you seemed pretty lost in my eyes. I'll cut you some slack" he grinned and adjusted himself.

Who tf does he think he is!!?..... Feeling like a model or whoever. I shouldn't have even told him my name.

" Honestly speaking, I have no idea about what you're talking about" I denied and looked outside the window just to see Renee coming back inside. I heaved a sigh of relief.

" Oh my!" She gasped and chuckled afterwards.

" Don't even say it, Ree. He's more trouble than you can ever imagine that he is" I said and rolled my eyes.

" I'm right here, you know?" He said, feigning annoyance but I couldn't care less.

" Hello!!....I'm Renee and what's your name?" Ree said, extending her hands for a handshake.

"I like your friend a lot better " he said to me and shook hands with Renee" nice to meet you, I'm Edmund".

I scoffed and looked away. In another direction, I saw Edmund's seatmate walking towards our direction and Benita skipping happily towards me once she spotted me.

"Can today get any worst?" I groaned.

"What's wrong Jen?" Ree asked looking worried.

"It's just that we're having alot of uninvited guests right now" I replied and they both looked up and saw both Benita and the other guy coming towards us.

"Hey roomie, it's been a minute" she chirped in as soon as she arrived.

 "Hi Benita" I replied dryly.

"Hey guys, I'm Troy, Eddie's friend". The guy introduced himself.

"Nice to meet you, I'm Jenny, this is Renee, and she's Benita, my roommate." I introduced gesturing at the people I'm referring to.

"Sooo.....you left me earlier and didn't bother looking for me, huh?" Benita inquired feigning annoyance.

It seems she's really determined to be friends with me. I should just give it a go. Perhaps we can all be part of something, like a nursing family-NURSING FAMILY - I love the sound of that.

" Look, I'm sorry about earlier, I just needed some time to chill" I explained.

" it's fine....."she responded and there was an awkward silence for a while.

" So does this mean we're all friends?" Troy asked looking really excited and breaking the ice.

 " yeah" I said and shrugged .

" I guess so" Renee said nonchalantly .

" Sure " Benita and Edmund chorused.

Alright then.... This was it. I made a group of friends in one day, hopefully I made the best choice because I don't want to have any regrets so soon.

" It's time for the next lecture " Edmund said. " I'll get your numbers after class, okay?" He added.

" And how do you know it's time, smarty-pants?" I asked him.

"Because I can see the lecturer coming towards this direction already. You really do need to work on your observance, smarty-pants" he responded sarcastically and left to his seat.

Tsk tsk tsk..... This guy is certainly getting on my nerves. But true to his words, an elderly lady walked in with a briefcase containing her laptop and other things she needed for the lecture. My company quietly disassembled to their seats. We all stood up to acknowledge the lecturer, as was the nursing rule of hierarchy, then she told us to sit down.

She calmly introduced herself and made us to have an idea of what she was going to be discussing. I made it my life mission to listen attentively this time around. Even if it meant not turning to look at him, or anyone else.

Mrs Helen talked about the theories of the different nursing legends- Florence Nightingale, Dorothea Orem, Myra Levine, Virginia Henderson, Callista Roy and so on.

"The course is called Foundation of Nursing and it teaches all we need to know as nurses" she said.

She kept talking and explaining things and just like that 2 hours was over. The next lecturer came over and took us on Microbiology and after a while, the lesson was over. Lectures for today were already over so I packed up my books, water bottle, procedure Manual and the snacks Renee got for me, that I didn't get the chance to eat earlier. Don't judge me for collecting stuffs from someone I just met, I really feel a special bond with her and even if I didn't, I couldn't say no. It was my favourite biscuit -Munchkins- It was her favourite too, so you see, she's my soul sister.

After chatting for a while, the rest came to catch up with us. We got to know each other better and exchanged numbers. Afterwards, I and Benita returned back to the hostel. I became more friendly than I was in the morning and Benita was beginning to love every bit of it. We cooked together and ate together. Soon she fell asleep. But I just couldn't sleep my mind wandered about, I thought of my family and what they would think about my new friends. Well, it's a shame they'll probably never meet them.... perhaps till graduation day, but it doesn't really matter because I know that I've found just what was missing. What I knew I needed for nursing school- A nursing family- even though I didn't plan for it to be so soon. I guess it will be perfect just the way it is.
