The world blurred.
Valerian's sword met the original's in a clash that cracked the very fabric of the vale. Sparks erupted like dying stars, their impact sending shockwaves through the canyon. Obsidian shards jutted from the earth, splitting as if the land itself recoiled from their duel.
Valerian's breath was ragged. Every swing against this twisted version of himself felt like striking against inevitability. This was more than battle—it was a reckoning.
"You think you're strong?" the original sneered, pressing forward. "You're a shadow. A contingency. I made you."
Their swords locked, faces inches apart. The older Valerian's eyes glowed with a corrupted brilliance—red and silver warping like a bleeding moon. "You were never meant to win. You were meant to unlock the door and die."
Valerian gritted his teeth, forcing the blade aside and slamming his fist into the man's face. "Then maybe I'll rewrite the plan."

Valerian surged forward, faster now. Umbra moved to intercept, but the original raised a hand.
"Don't," he ordered. And to Valerian's surprise, Umbra stopped. Confused. Conflicted.
"What did you do to him?!" Valerian shouted.
"I didn't do anything," the original said with a twisted grin. "He remembers who made him."
Valerian's stomach turned. Umbra… his silent protector, the first summoned shadow. Had he been created by the original?
"You're lying."
"Am I?"
The original snapped his fingers. A new ripple spread through the air—and three more shadows emerged behind him. Versions of Umbra. Each with slight differences—horns bent at strange angles, swords wreathed in blood-colored fire.
> [System Alert: Shadow Echoes Detected.] > [Elite Class: Echo Revenants — Origin-Class Summons. Level: 40]
Valerian leapt back, heart pounding.
"I perfected the system," the original said. "You just inherited my scraps."
The Revenants charged.
Valerian moved like a storm, ducking beneath a blade and countering with a fiery arc that decapitated the first Revenant. But it reformed instantly, laughter echoing through the storm.
"They're tied to me," the original explained. "Kill one, I remake it. Cut off the head, I regrow three."
Valerian clenched his fists.
"Then I'll sever the root."
He raced toward the original, activating a skill he hadn't yet mastered.
> [New Skill Activation: Shadowburst Step — Blink Through Shadows. Cooldown: 30 seconds. Mana Drain: 40%]
His body flickered—appearing behind the original in a burst of dark smoke.
Steel arced.
The original twisted just in time, blade deflecting Valerian's strike. The clash split the stone beneath them.
"Good," the original hissed, eyes wild. "Better. That's it—grow! Become worthy!"
Valerian didn't answer. He fought.
Minutes passed like lifetimes, every movement honed by fury. The storm above churned. Thunder clapped like drums of war. The Vale itself pulsed with energy, ancient wards cracking as their duel shook the ley-lines.
Valerian's cloak was torn, face bloodied, breath shallow—but his will surged stronger than ever.
"You think you're inevitable," he growled, dodging a flurry of strikes. "But I've beaten fate before."
The original laughed. "You've delayed it. That's all."
Valerian slid under a sweeping blow, channeled flame through his sword, and plunged it into the original's side. Blood hissed as it hit the burning blade.
"GAAAH!"
The original shoved him back, eyes wide with fury.
"You…" He coughed, black blood staining his lips. "You're starting to remember, aren't you?"
Valerian blinked.
And the world flickered.
---
A memory. But not his own.
A boy kneeling at the foot of a broken gate.
A voice whispering: You will be the key. Whether you want it or not.
The boy looked up—
—and saw himself, smiling.
"Now… wake up."
---
Valerian staggered.
"Wh… What was that?"
The original grinned, staggering too. "A taste of your real self. Of the truth. You're beginning to sync with your core memory. It's only a matter of time."
Valerian shook his head, sword trembling. "No. That wasn't me."
"That is you. The one before the splinter. Before the system broke you into pieces. I kept the mind. You got the instincts."
The ground trembled.
The Vale cracked wider—and from its heart, a great pulse of black light surged upward, reaching toward the sky.
> [System Alert: True Gate Resonance Detected.] [Warning: Awakened Key Fragment within Proximity. Suppression Failing.]
Valerian fell to one knee.
Pain lanced through his chest. His heart felt like it was being torn apart from within. The original smiled.
"It's starting. You're becoming what you were always meant to be."
Valerian screamed—then focused.
No.
Not this time.
He summoned all his will. Every trial. Every betrayal. Every drop of blood he'd shed.
He grabbed the pain. Gripped it. Forged it.

The pain vanished.
Valerian stood.
Silver fire ignited around him. His sword reshaped—its edge now lined with burning runes. His eyes no longer flickered. They blazed.
The original's grin faded.
"What have you done?"
Valerian pointed his blade.
"I chose my fate."
He vanished.
And reappeared behind the original—driving his sword through his back.
The older Valerian gasped. Blood splashed.
> [Echo Severance Activated. Connection Terminated.]
The corrupted system interface on the original's body shattered. The Revenants screamed as they dissolved into smoke.
The Vale fell silent.
The original fell to his knees, coughing, staring at the blade in his chest.
"This… wasn't… how it was supposed to go."
Valerian knelt beside him. "You were right about one thing. I am the key."
He pulled the blade free.
"But keys can lock as well as open."
The original collapsed, eyes wide… and still.
Valerian stood alone in the storm.
