Chapter 272 - Looking Back on the Past

The moment Xiao Yan woke from cultivation, four familiar scents drifted into his nose.

Opening his eyes, he immediately saw four graceful figures — Xiaoxue, Xiao Yi, Zhu Zhuqing, and Ning Rongrong.

"You guys? What are you doing here?" Xiao Yan asked, genuinely surprised. This wasn't part of the plan at all.

Xiaoxue huffed, "You're really asking? Didn't you say you'd finish the fight quickly? Look — it's almost dark."

Xiaoxue was wearing a small white crop-top today, revealing her smooth arms and delicate shoulders. Below, she had on a blue low-waist skirt made of denim-like fabric, lightly fastened by a thin belt. The two front flaps of the skirt overlapped just enough to make her long legs half-visible.

The hem was decorated with tassels, giving the skirt a light, airy sway. Her bare feet were slipped into silver high heels, her entire aura radiating the liveliness of a youthful beauty.

Her alluring chest rose and fell with each breath. Because she was kneeling on the grass, her graceful figure was perfectly visible. The skirt only reached halfway down her calves, revealing a segment of fair, luminous legs — smooth and delicate.

Xiao Yan looked up at the sky and finally realized it really was getting dark.

"Guess I overdid the training," Xiao Yan said, rubbing his head with an embarrassed smile.

The explosion issue had kept him thinking for far too long.

Ning Rongrong pointed at Tang Hao, who was currently stuffed inside a Blue Silver Emperor vine jar. "That guy… what's his situation?"

Tang Hao looked utterly inhuman — only a head remained, everything else was a mess.

Xiao Yan replied, "Tang Hao, the Haotian Douluo of the soul master world. Right now he's basically a cripple. Once we find the Haotian Sect, we'll hand him over for them to deal with."

"He's really the Haotian Douluo?" Ning Rongrong looked doubtful. "My father and Sword Grandpa always said Haotian Douluo was a rising star of the soul master world, incredibly talented. How did he end up like this? Worse than a beggar."

At that moment, Tang Hao slowly opened his hazy eyes. "Little girl from the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Clan… I'm Xiao Yan's father. Is this how you talk to me?"

His voice was hoarse, and that half-dead appearance of his, suddenly speaking in the dim light… It scared Ning Rongrong so badly she jumped.

"The old monster spoke—!" Ning Rongrong dove straight into Xiao Yan's arms, refusing to look at the jar.

Xiao Yan didn't expect this mischievous girl to actually get scared.

Holding her soft, delicate body, he gently patted her back. "Relax. This old monster can't cause trouble anymore."

Xiao Yan looked down at Tang Hao, his gaze cold. This old guy was definitely mentally broken — contradicting himself constantly. A lunatic, most likely.

As for Tang Hao, Xiao Yan had no patience left. "Old thing, you better behave."

Tang Hao opened his mouth, but the memory of having his soul bone sliced apart made him shrink back into silence.

Zhu Zhuqing glanced at Tang Hao, then at Xiao Yan. She wanted to ask something but felt awkward bringing it up.

"Just say what you want to say," Xiao Yan chuckled. "You want to ask why he calls himself my father, yet I treated him like this?"

Zhu Zhuqing blushed and nodded. She really was curious.

Ning Rongrong suddenly remembered Xiao Yan's background. "Your martial spirit is the Haotian Hammer. Why didn't you go into seclusion with the Haotian Sect?"

Thinking back to his miserable past, Xiao Yan sighed. "I didn't even know about the Haotian Sect until I grew up."

"Most people don't remember anything from when they're babies. I'm one of the unlucky ones who do… but the memories aren't pleasant. From the moment I was born, I had no mother — only this old bastard."

"Sometimes he'd shove scalding porridge down my throat. Sometimes he'd starve me for three days before feeding me again. Honestly, surviving to this point was pure luck."

Tang Hao fumed in silence. A Haotian Douluo, feeding a child — who else in the entire Douluo Continent would ever do that?

This brat doesn't appreciate it at all. Should've strangled him… no, I should've made Ah Yin get rid of the child while she was pregnant…

Ning Rongrong and Zhu Zhuqing were both stunned. They knew Xiao Yan was strong, but they never imagined he had such a childhood.

"You weren't… picked up by someone else, right?" Ning Rongrong asked doubtfully, then shook her head. "Martial spirits are inherited from the parents. Since you have the Haotian Hammer, he should be your biological father."

Xiao Yan nodded lightly. "Biological father, yes. But only that."

"From childhood, I never saw him as a father. Honestly, I thought he was an enemy. From the moment I turned two and could cook for myself, he treated me like a servant — sitting around waiting for me to cook for him."

Tang Hao couldn't help retorting, "You're my son! Cooking for your father — that's basic filial duty!"

Ning Rongrong and Zhu Zhuqing gave him matching looks of disgust. Making a two-year-old cook — and he says it so casually.

Xiao Yan smiled faintly. "Maybe some people would actually accept being your son. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them."

"Is there really someone who'd willingly be Tang Hao's son?" Ning Rongrong looked horrified.

Xiao Yan shrugged. "Who knows? The world's big. Lots of strange people out there."

"Cheap-boned," Ning Rongrong snorted. "If such a person existed, Tang Hao should whip him every day. The moment he even thinks of being unfilial, he should suffer the pain of ten thousand arrows through the heart."

Tang Hao blinked. Maybe I was too gentle. If I had used a whip, this brat wouldn't be so rebellious…

Xiao Yan almost laughed. "You call him cheap-boned, yet you want Tang Hao to whip him — isn't that a reward?"

Ning Rongrong blinked, then stuck out her tongue. "Right… that'd be too good for someone like that."

Xiao Yan continued, "After my martial spirit awakened and I learned about soul masters, I started to piece things together. Eventually, I found out the truth."

"The reason Tang Hao fell from a Titled Douluo into a drunkard wasn't anything complicated — his wife died, and he lost the will to live."

"Then why didn't he just go die?" Ning Rongrong blurted out.

Zhu Zhuqing covered her mouth, laughing softly. Rongrong was fearless.

Tang Hao nearly popped his eyes out. A Titled Douluo, being told to commit suicide?!

Ning Rongrong continued calmly, "Don't say it was for the child. With that level of 'care,' most babies wouldn't survive. The only miracle here is that his wife didn't crawl out of the grave to beat him."
