Chapter 22 - Spell Theory

"What is happening now?"

Lune asked once she caught up to her classmates. They stood in a circle around three students. One was Vidra, while the other two were unknown students who didn't belong to their class.

They seemed agitated, and Vidra seemed rather excited. Lune quickly dragged him out of the circle and apologized to the two students, even though she didn't know what had happened between them.

"What are you doing?"

Vidra asked Lune. His eyes smiled at her as if they found her amusing.

"I'm stopping you before you waste more of our time. The next class is Spell Theory, and we're already late."

Lune let Vidra go once the situation was resolved, and they headed back to their classroom with the rest of their classmates. The teacher was already present, looking at the clock on the wall as they entered.

"Mort probably gave you all a hard time. I won't hold anything against the class this time, but be punctual. We lost important minutes, so let's skip the introductions. Does anyone have a question before we start the class? I will only allow three of you to ask something."

Vidra raised his hand.

"Do I need to attend this class? I'm a trait holder, and I can't use spells. Isn't spell theory useless to me?"

The teacher looked at Vidra, who sat at the back of the class.

"No one is forced to attend my class. However, if you think that spell theory is useless to you, then think again. Most of your fights will be against mages who cast spells. This is all I can say to you. You know where to find the door if you still want to go."

"I just changed my mind."

The teacher nodded and began her class once she confirmed that no one had any questions.

"First of all, spells are divided into seven levels. Every level has an activator word. To use a spell of the first level, you will have to use the activator word of the first level and then add the spell name."

"For example. The activator word of the first level is Au, and the name of the mana missile spell is Dinaz. So, if you want to use the mana missile spell, you will have to say:"

"Au Dinaz."

A twisted line of runes encircled the teacher's hand, and she quickly sent a mana missile out of the window.

"Sounds easy, right? I believe most of you already know how to use this spell. You can find it almost everywhere. Learning is easy, but Mana Missile is much easier than any other spell."

"Mana missile is the only spell where saying the spell name along with the activator word is enough to invoke the spell itself. You just shot out a lump of mana from your hand. There is nothing to learn."

"However, if you want to learn any other spell, you will have to learn all of its runes. Let me give you an example."

The teacher raised her arm in the air to make sure everyone had a good view of the spell.

"Au Erevois"

A line of runes manifested around her arm. Twisting around like a snake.

"This is Au Erevois. The first level spell of speed. I halted the casting on purpose so everyone could see what was happening. The runes twisting around my arm didn't appear by themselves, unlike when you use mana missile."

"To be able to cast Au Erevois. You will have to learn all of the runes and manifest them with your mana. This is the same method you will have to use for all of your spells, other than mana missile."

"For the next four years, we will learn about different spells and all about their runes. Today, we will learn about the spell called Au Zaid. This spell is essential if you want to become a mage."

"Au Zaid is capable of releasing a mana wave that can disrupt other spells as long as they're not completely cast yet. Keep in mind that this spell doesn't work on trait holders. Their mana pattern is different."

The teacher proceeded to show the students the runes of Au Zaid. Their task was to memorize it by the end of the class and successfully cast it at least once. The first one to learn it was Uros.

His learning speed was on a completely different level compared to most of the students. He managed to cast the spell right after the teacher showed it.

"Excellent, student Uros. Come up to me and let us have a duel using only Au Zaid. The first one who manages to cast the spell, thus cancelling the enemy attack, wins."

Uros stood in front of the teacher. They asked Arcine to count down from three.

"Au Zaid."

"Au Zaid."

The teacher managed to counter Uros, albeit just barely. Uros was lightning fast despite just learning how to use Au Zaid today. Slowly but surely, the others understood the runes of the spell. The second one to master it was Arcine.

He also dueled against the teacher, but his speed was nowhere near as fast as Uros'. Meanwhile, Vandra observed the class silently, trying to memorize the names of different spells.

The class ended shortly after everyone learned how to use Au Zaid. They didn't have any more classes today due to the length of the entrance ceremony. Vidra stood up, deciding to take a look around the academy before heading back to his room.

He decided to check if anything had changed with the system.

[Elven Fire]

Type: Unique, Growth, Miracle

D-Rank skill (Progression: 5%)

Description: This spark is the last gift left behind by the village of Inaka.

Vidra closed the system window. The progression was still at five percent. He still couldn't figure out how to raise the progression percentage despite using his trait a few times since the exam.

For now, he decided to visit the library in hopes of finding something useful about trait holders.
