Manchester City and Arsenal both emphasize possession, but their approaches couldn't be more different.
City value control and composure — they build patiently, keep the ball, and only strike when they've established full command of the rhythm.
Arsenal, though, under Wenger's hand, takes that same foundation and turns it into something far more aggressive.
Their passing game isn't just about holding the ball; it's about attacking through it. Every touch, every pass, drives forward with intent. At their best, it only takes a few sharp exchanges before the ball's already inside the opponent's penalty area — quick, fluid, and fearless.
That's what makes Arsenal so difficult to contain.
So when Manchester City face this version of Arsenal, they can't dictate the tempo as they usually do. Arsenal press high, move fast, and refuse to let City settle in midfield.
And in this match, the difference is glaring.
City tried to slow things down, to reassert control — but the moment Arsenal regain possession, they break forward like a wave.
It's constant pressure. Constant motion.
Even though Yaya Touré and David Silva were playing well, there's a sense that City's midfield just wasn't clicking. Something feels missing — the rhythm, the sharpness, the spark.
By contrast, Cazorla and Kai were running the show for Arsenal. Kai sits deep, dictating the tempo and cleaning up danger, while Cazorla orchestrates the attack ahead of him. The chemistry between them is obvious.
"Manchester City's midfield looks second-best right now," Martin remarked from the gantry. "There's no real connection between Touré and Silva. They can't match Arsenal's tempo or adapt to those quick rhythm shifts."
Alan replied, "True, but remember — Pellegrini's City are built for possession play. They'll need patience. It's not easy to play your game when Arsenal are pressing like this."
The consensus around the stadium was clear — Arsenal were the better side so far.
Their movement was sharp, their passing crisp, while City's play looked a little clogged, a little forced.
And on the pitch, Yaya Touré was beginning to feel it too.
Receiving a pass from Silva, he scanned the field — but there it was again. Kai was right there, closing the gap, shadowing him, cutting off every forward lane.
It wasn't the first time tonight.
Touré couldn't help but notice how much Kai had improved. Last season, the kid's positioning was still his best suit — his individual duels were excellent, but he lacked a bit of the physical edge.
Now? That flaw was gone. His endurance has clearly increased, and he'd grown confident on the ball too.
Still, Touré wasn't the kind of player to back down. As City's top scorer with 18 goals this season, he'd carried the team countless times — the engine, the leader, the spearhead.
But tonight, he was facing Arsenal's strongest shield.
He took the ball again from Silva, body angled toward Kai.
And the duel began.
Touré's strides were long and powerful, not the fastest, but once he built momentum, few could stop him.
Kai didn't hesitate. He stepped in, timing his challenge perfectly.
Bang!
The two collided — strength against strength, will against will.
Touré held his ground, shielding the ball, scanning for passing options. He knew Kai wouldn't dive in recklessly. The young midfielder's timing was too good, too disciplined.
Yaya Touré played a short pass into Džeko, hoping to set up a one-two.
But just as he made his run forward, Kai turned sharply, and Touré ran straight into his back.
Kai calmly intercepted the return pass intended for Džeko, turned, and immediately laid it off to a teammate.
Touré rubbed his chest with a frown — that collision hurt more than he'd expected.
He realized that if he kept trying to outmuscle Kai, he'd be the one losing ground.
It wasn't that Touré lacked strength — far from it — but every time he tangled with Kai, City's attack stalled.
Kai wasn't just Arsenal's ball-winner; he was the anchor that froze opponents' momentum.
As long as he held his ground, Arsenal had time to reset and close the spaces.
Alan Smith: "Arsenal's pressing shape is suffocating City's passing lanes. Pellegrini needs a plan to drag Kai out of that holding position. As long as he stays there, City won't get through the middle."
..
On the touchline, Pellegrini frowned, scanning the pitch. Arsenal's shape looked like iron — compact, disciplined, and unyielding.
As long as Kai sat deep, City had no way through.
He needed to lure him out.
But how?
When Touré got the signal from the bench, he wiped the sweat from his forehead, looking a bit unsure.
He understood the idea — but not the execution.
Still, after a quick discussion with Silva and Fernandinho, they came up with a plan.
Kai, unaware of the setup, collected the ball deep as usual.
Oddly, no one came to press.
He took a couple of steps forward. Still, no challenge.
Kai raised an eyebrow — City's midfield looked strangely open.
He thought for a moment, then simply passed the ball to Cazorla and dropped back again.
"Ah, for crying out loud…"
Touré muttered under his breath.
Cazorla tried to wriggle free with a few sharp turns, but Touré pressed him quickly, forcing him to release the ball to Wilshere. Wilshere's cross aimed for Suárez, but Joe Hart came off his line to claim it.
A few minutes later, City tried the same trap again.
Kai advanced with the ball, scanned the field, and — once more — played it safely and retreated.
Touré's patience snapped.
Seriously?
The path was wide open — and yet the man refused to bite.
Touré felt like their acting wasn't convincing enough.
So, on Arsenal's next possession, he decided to sell it harder.
As Kai received the ball, Touré lunged in, clipping his own foot as he went down dramatically.
Bang!
Kai didn't even flinch. He passed the ball away cleanly.
Touré looked up from the turf and saw Kai staring down at him, half amused, half puzzled.
Kai scratched his cheek and said while helping Touré up, "You're trying to bait me forward, aren't you?"
Touré blinked. "You knew?"
Kai grinned. "Your acting's terrible."
Sure enough, City's midfield had spread wide, waiting for him to push up. If he had taken the bait, Arsenal's backline would've been left exposed.
"Your defensive line closed in too fast," Kai said, jogging back toward his own half. "If you'd delayed that by a second or two, I might've fallen for it."
Touré snorted, half-laughing, half-exasperated. "Or maybe you'd have scored!"
Kai shrugged.
..
On the Arsenal bench, Wenger shook his head with a smile.
"City tried everything to lure Kai out. If it were anyone else, they might've fallen for it — but not him. He's too cautious."
Pat Rice grinned. "Told you. He's obsessed with control. If we were behind, maybe he'd take a gamble. But when we're on top, he won't leave that space unguarded."
After a pause, Pat added with a chuckle, "He's the perfect defensive midfielder for Mourinho's system, you know that?"
Wenger laughed. "True. But Mourinho will never get him."
