"Liam!" she shouted his name through the phone, snapping him out of the haze of his drifting thoughts—still tangled in the aftermath of the roadside crash.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm totally listening to what you were saying," he replied quickly, scrambling to reel himself back into the conversation.
"Uhh, whatever," she muttered, not bothering to hide her doubt.
"So did you manage to find out why Kieran wasn't arrested or proven guilty for the crime?"
"No, I wasn't. I'm shocked myself," he admitted, his tone dropping with frustration. "He played a gamble and came out on top. He's way smarter than I anticipated."
"Yeah, I guess he's way smarter than we both thought," she agreed, her voice thoughtful for a second before lightening with a dry chuckle.
"But at least now we have a lead—something to go on. We just have to wait for him to screw up, leave another piece of evidence behind. In the meantime, we keep the pressure on."
