Levi woke with the first rays of the sun and immediately got up and woke Jun.They were to stick to the plan they had discussed during the night. They left the inn and walked together to the outskirts of Redmarsh.Levi got into a carriage and set off for Norbury, where Jun was to wait for him under the trees until he returned.
In the afternoon Levi returned with the cart, this time taking Jun with him, and they set off for the railway station.
-'Didn't your patients say anything?' Jun asked.
-'I told them that I had to go to the city centre for some training and that I didn't know when I would be back,' said Levi.
They had reached the railway station, Levi bought a ticket for each of them and they settled on the train. The train departed after 20 minutes and they both started to watch out of the window with the hope and fear of starting a new life inside.
The wheels of the iron rails made a rhythmic melody, the train was slowly moving away from the streets similar to the gloomy atmosphere of Redmarsh.Jun was leaning against the window watching the outside. The grey houses and stone streets were giving way to fields and high hills.Levi was right in front of him.
The compartment they were in on the train was old but warm: there were wooden floors, a small gas lamp and a small cupboard, Levi had bought a ticket for a compartment for two people.
-'This is all very expensive and I can't help you at all,' Jun said, looking at Levi.
-'Hmm, yes, it's a bit expensive, but I can give you a chance to pay it back,' said Levi.
-'I'd love to, how can I pay it back?' Jun said eagerly.
-'Ten years, you have to stay with me for at least ten years and you have to love me very much.' said Levi seriously.
-'What' said Jun and smiled 'ten years?'. 'Doctor, how long have you been such a joker?' Jun said.
-'No joke' said Levi.
-'Then you'll stay with me for ten years, won't you, and you have to love me.' said Jun.
-'Well, I guess,' said Levi.
-'And then, what happens after ten years?' said Jun.
-'I don't know, we'll talk about it then,' said Levi.
They were both excited, happy and their love for each other was evident in their eyes. This journey would be good for them, they hoped so...
After about eight hours the train stopped at a station in Cumberland.Jun and Levi got off the train with a few small bags in their hands. They were going to take a train in another direction. They bought tickets for the train they were going to take and continued on their way north.
The next day they arrived at the railway station and received the answers to the letters Levi had sent. His friend in Keswick had said that he was looking forward to them and that he would arrange everything here.Jun was curious about the letter from Levi's family, what they would say and how much Levi had told them.
Levi quickly opened and read the letter from his parents and handed it to Jun to read.Jun's reading skills were not the best but he could understand it.His parents had told them to be careful and had sent them money for the journey and they wanted to meet Jun.They would visit Levi and Jun when they settled in Keswick.
Jun was very relieved, he didn't want to put Levi against his family in such a situation.
They were both relieved. They got back on the train and continued their journey. The journey took about six days.Norbury was in the south of the country and Keswick was in the north. They were at the last stage of their journey by train and carriage. They were now on the train to Keswick.
Keswick was a small but lively town in the north of England, in the heart of the Lake District, surrounded by lush green mountains, a place full of peace with its clean air and natural beauties.Narrow stone streets, handmade wooden houses, window sills full of colourful flowers reflected the warm atmosphere of the town. The scent emanating from the flowers mixed with the chirping of birds in the first hours of the morning.
It was on the tenth day of June 1887 that Levi and Jun arrived in this town with birds chirping and wonderful floral scents.
Thomas, an old friend of Levi's, was well respected in the town.Thomas had arranged for a suitable clinic in the town to support Levi's new beginning. The clinic was a bright and spacious room on the ground floor of one of the stone buildings.Soft sunlight streamed through the window, and the view outside soothed the souls of the patients and staff.
Levi's family had always supported them during the journey. At every station there was a letter and a bag of provisions waiting for them. Thanks to this help, Levi and Jun had survived their difficult journey with ease. Now their business in the town was very easy.
They had started a new life in the town. They had rented a small one-storey house. There were colourful flowers in the garden. The house was a little outside the town, which was nice, it was relaxing for both of them to be away from prying eyes.
They were easily adapting to their new life in the town.Everyone in the town came to the clinic from the first days to see the new doctor and his assistant. The people here were not rude and interfering like in Norbury. That's why Levi and Jun were more comfortable, but they were always careful.
The townsfolk saw them as brother and sister, master and apprentice, doctor and his assistant, they couldn't think of anything else.
Jun and Levi were happy in Keswick, they hadn't been here long, but they had got used to the place, they had an order, they had a house, and good days were waiting for them in this house.
