Chapter 44 - OPRS: Chapter 44

Alistair's initial goal was to establish his authority.

But beyond that, two other things happened naturally.

First, he instilled confidence in them.

Alistair had expected significant casualties before they gained this confidence, but the Marines' skill level was surprisingly low. Fifteen days of emergency training was enough for the pirates to inflict heavy damage—of course, the muskets stored by the Kuja Pirates also played a significant role.

Second, he trained them in post-battle first aid.

He had lectured on this for fifteen days, but he had no idea how much they had retained.

This encounter with the Marines was a major test: whether they remembered his first aid knowledge, how many people they could save, and even whether they showed bias towards the Marines.

Alistair aimed to forge the ultimate people's army—one where people would cheer their arrival, feel safe in their presence, and never worry about their discipline.

His authority within this pirate crew was now established. Even Devils Luck, within this crew, this army, no longer held sway.

William seemed to have no objection to being stripped of his power, remaining silent, baffling Wood and Barabaro.

It seemed William and Alistair had reached an understanding regarding the Devils Luck Pirates' future.

This was beyond their ability to question, so they remained silent, obeying Alistair's orders.

The next few hours were a whirlwind of activity: treating the Marines, tying them up one by one, counting the spoils of war, checking the Marine ship's Log Pose and various documents—all extremely valuable.

Alistair oversaw everything, micromanaging every detail. He inherently possessed the characteristics of a large government: worrying about everything, trusting no one, interfering in everything.

But this worry and interference were beneficial, because there were many fools in this world…

Even after Alistair repeatedly emphasized using washed cloths for cleaning and bloodletting, some pirates still threw used cloths into the clean boiling water.

The three buckets—one for initial washing, one for wringing, and one for clean boiling water—were all mixed up and contaminated.

The pirates also lacked sensitivity to the spoils of war. They almost threw the books from the captain's quarters overboard. If Alistair hadn't been watching, they would have.

Finally, they were careless with the wounded.

The pirates treated the Marines as prisoners, even as test subjects.

Expecting them to treat the Marines with compassion was impossible, but deliberately hurting them while bandaging their wounds was needlessly creating conflict.

He was running around frantically, when the Boa Sisters, hidden in the cabin, finally emerged.

Alistair directly put the Den Den Mushi in his pocket—a crucial strategic resource, as were the Log Poses. Everyone wanted to help the overwhelmed Alistair, but couldn't find a way to contribute.

Alistair was implementing something unprecedented, a system completely different from this world's norms.

Only by understanding his ideology could one grasp the meaning of his actions. Only by understanding the why could one wholeheartedly support it.

For example, Alistair never considered the Marines as enemies. He believed that most Marines could be won over, so he treated them kindly, making them feel that this man was completely different from other pirates.

But before defeating them, he was ruthless, unconcerned with their lives.

The Spade Pirates, having witnessed everything, felt a chill down their spines, seeing him as a hypocrite, or perhaps a schizophrenic.

But the Marines who saw only Alistair's kindness, especially Isuka, seeing him sweating profusely while tending to her men, couldn't help but feel a sense of affection and curiosity.

Her leg had already been bandaged by Masked Deuce. Leaning against the railing, watching Alistair's busy figure, she asked, "Who is he? How did you get mixed up with the Devils Luck Pirates?"

Since the Spade Pirates hadn't attacked, Isuka didn't feel any hatred towards Ace. Embarrassed by her earlier tears in Ace's arms, she didn't dare to face him, instead asking Masked Deuce, who had bandaged her.

They were old friends, just an example of the intertwined fates of Marines and pirates.

"Him? He's the mastermind behind your defeat, the main culprit." Masked Deuce, a chill running down his spine, gave a wry smile, lit a cigarette, exhaled a puff of smoke, relaxing visibly, before speaking.

"Him? Impossible, he's so thin…"

"He defeated a hundred trained Marines with a hundred ordinary pirates, a freak." Ace, sitting on the railing beside her, crossed his legs, lightly pushing his hat brim with a finger, carefully observing Alistair's actions, interjected.

"It has nothing to do with weight, strength, or even Devil Fruits."

"It's like magic."

The Spade Pirates chimed in, having witnessed the transformation of these weak pirates—whom they could defeat individually—into an army they couldn't possibly overcome. They could only describe it as magic. Before they could say more, Alistair's shout interrupted them.

"Assemble!" Alistair, appearing at the other end of the railing, raised his arm, his hand held high, like a spear or a flag, causing all the pirates to instantly stop working, forming a square formation within seconds, using his arm as a reference point.

Both the Spade Pirates and the Marines were stunned, mouths agape, speechless.

Were these pirates?

"Good! It seems my month and a half of training wasn't wasted. You should remember what I told you when we first met."

"I promised you that if you followed my orders, I would let you go after leaving the Calm Belt."

"Now, it's time to keep that promise."
