Chapter 8 - A Rejection

It must be a lie that he deliberately told to intimidate me. I had to reject him if I wanted to live in peace. Even at the risk of losing the chance to get a mate from an alpha bloodline, becoming Dexton's mate wasn't a favorable option.

"Focus, Miss Foxx," Mr. Levy said as he snapped a finger in front of my face. We were sitting across from each other, but the sound of his snap was like an alpha's trademark booming voice and made me shut up instantly. "It's the weekend, and you can relax. I'm sure you've already done what you were supposed to get done. Right?"

"Y-yes, sir. I did, but..."

Mr. Levy squinted visibly. Sitting alone with him at one table and in one room like this made me even more nervous. Not because of anything, but because his focus became solely on me, it made it difficult to avoid any discussion he brought up in our conversation.

"Tell me the truth. Is there a problem? Is he being indecent with you again?" he urged. Again? Why were there more and more strange facts about Mr. Levy? I never told him anything.

Until the end of breakfast, Mr. Levy was still talking about the same thing. He even followed me to my room.

"So-sorry, Sir, if I'm presumptuous. Why are you so curious and seem to have guessed what he's going to do to me? Is..."

"No, I'm not. I'm not what you think I am." He looked nervous.

"What do I think you are? That's not what I want to talk about, Sir. Are you stalking me?" I asked, cutting off the words he hadn't finished. The pair of hazel, sliced eyes looked wide-eyed for a moment before he let out a light chuckle, and by then, it was my turn to be quite surprised at his reaction. He... could laugh? A man as cold and dull as Mr. Levy could laugh? I must be delusional. "A-are you laughing at me?"

"Ah, ahem! I didn't mean that, sorry. I wasn't stalking you, but you must have forgotten that you were under my protection. I didn't pay much attention when one of my men reported everything. I don't know. I don't really remember because whatever the private conversation between you and that man was, I certainly had nothing to do with it."

Yes, that was right. He couldn't have been stalking. Still, I was suspicious of whatever he knew about me and Dexton. Was Mr. Levy a psychic? I had heard that some of the alpha's descendants had special abilities. Maybe not just certain people, but almost all. I don't know.

"Alright. Then I don't have to worry about my safety every time I see him, right?" I asked for confirmation, but he didn't respond. "Then I'll go in first, Sir. Thank you for the breakfast. I'll see you again Monday morning, right? Or would you like me to accompany you to another client meeting?"

He was still silent. Oh, Moon Goddess, why did this man not talk much? It made it even more awkward for me to be around him for too long.

"Mr. Levi," I called out. His reaction was confused and thoughtful. I finally decided to turn around and enter the room, but before I could leave, he grabbed my wrist, bringing my steps to a halt.

"What did you guys talk about while you were there?" he asked with a cold tone and a voice so low that I could barely hear him. I was stunned and didn't have time to ask, as he immediately asked another question. "Tell me, did he say anything to you?"

"He-he..."

"Tell me, Shenna. Did he say anything to you yesterday?" He called me by name, and I was at a loss for how to react. I just nodded, an increasingly anxious feeling squeezing my heart. My stomach was churning, and I had no idea what I felt. What did he want exactly? "What did he say?"

"He said that I'm his mate," I replied, and I could no longer translate Mr. Levy's expression. Was he angry? Or was he just curious? Once he knew, that was it. There was nothing he wanted to do because even though I was his personal assistant, he didn't really care, and there was no need. "I-I don't know what to do."

"Do you trust him?" he asked, which I only answered with a shake. "Do you? Tell me."

"I don't know, Sir. I'm just an orphaned omega with no wolf. Is it possible to mate with an alpha descendant? Isn't that impossible?" I laughed bitterly.

"I'll take you to his residence now." He grabbed the coat hanging not far from where he stood and then turned to leave.

"Wh-what? What for? Do you want me to settle things with him? I already did, and he said I should return soon, but I haven't decided yet." Mr. Levy's steps stopped after hearing my words. He turned around and came closer to me, suddenly pinning me against the wall and making my heart seem to slide and stop instantly.

"What did he ask you to come back for?"

"He-he said–"

"Don't stammer!" he snapped. "Say it clearly, and you can't stammer, or a bad guy like him will use your fear as a weapon against you. Say it... slowly, but with conviction."

I nodded as I closed my eyes. This man was scaring me more and more. "He said he wanted to perform a mating ritual to mark me immediately. B-but, um, I mean, I had a bad feeling. I'm dreaming strange things and can't tell if it's just a dream. I..."

My eyes began to heat up for whatever reason. Being in Mr. Levy's confinement like this made me both scared and feel safe at the same time. Would it be okay to tell him everything that had been bothering me recently? Could I tell him that I was here to escape Dexton and his madness and the members of the Blue Eclipse Pack?

"Reject him," he said.

"What?"

"You heard what I said, Shenna. I'm going to walk you there, and you have to straighten your face, look him in the eye, say his name, and reject him. Do you hear me? Do it or I won't be able to protect you from him."

"You came again," said the man with a sharp and fierce gaze in front of me. If Mr. Levy scared me every time he spoke and behaved, but could make the other side of my heart feel safe, it differed from what I felt towards Dexton. Even if he just stood still and stared at me, any form of horror always managed to run through my entire nerve center.

I wasn't sure if he was really my mate, but every time I saw him, a strange eruption kept bothering me, and I couldn't describe it properly. I didn't want it, but it was as if some crazy side of me was forcing me to defend his lie about us being mates—if he was in fact lying.

What if I didn't reject him and just went along with his game? I could get revenge that way, right?

No! Mr. Levy had given clear instructions on this matter. There was no way he would protect me if I broke them, and if all the bad things Dexton did back then happened again, I didn't have the power to take revenge—I was just a wolfless wolf anyway.

"I didn't come to do what you want," I replied, making him laugh. My gaze fell on his wet-looking hair. It made one of my body parts react. Shit! This was totally out of my control. What was wrong with me?

He grabbed my waist, and I tried to break free, but his strong hold made me freeze. Flashes of the disturbing dream I'd had for some time now suddenly flashed through my memory of being close to him at this moment.

"I don't really care what your purpose is. Coming to my house means you're ready for what I'm going to give you. I've already promised it. You can't possibly forget, right?"

"U-unfortunately, I'm not good at remembering the words of a man like you." Damn it! Don't stammer, Shenna! Remember Mr. Levy's words. "I came to—hmph!"

Shit! He silenced me with a deep, warm kiss. His tongue slipped into my mouth as I tried to break away, but my body's reaction betrayed me this time. Instead, I let out a soft sigh, which, when I realized it, made me want to punish myself.

I squeezed Dexton's shirt, pushing away and stopping his kissing right then and there. My gaze fell on him, who seemed to be wondering, although his grin showed satisfaction at seeing through my stupid hormonal reaction.

"Why, Foxy? Why stop me? I see you enjoyed our kiss just now."

"Dexton Elmer, I, Shenna Foxx, reject you as my mate and don't give you a chance to reject my rejection at any time. Get out of my sight, and I will make sure we never meet again."
