Finally, it was the day of the U.A. exam, which Shin had been waiting and training for since he made up his mind, pledging to be a great hero.
U.A. High School's Hero Course—a training school for those whose goal is to acquire the necessary qualifications needed for pro heroes.
The sun shone across the horizon, with birds singing all over, and the blue sky was perfect nonetheless. Shin had a hard time sleeping since he was nervous—excited about this great day he had been waiting for for the past 14 years.
He did some light push-ups and sit-ups before taking his bath to keep his body in great shape for today. He wore his junior high uniform and folded an All Might hoodie into his backpack, just in case he needed to change.
He walked downstairs to grab his meal when he saw his mom and dad, including Rika, at the dining table, waiting for him.
"How're you feeling, son?" his dad asked, reassuring him with a smile.
"Kind of… excited, I guess." Shin rubbed his bald head and returned the smile before opening his eyes and taking his seat.
"I made a special omelet rice for you, Shin." His mom carried his plate with care and placed it right in front of him. "Enjoy your breakfast, sweetie."
"Woooah, looks delicious."
*Itadakimasu!*
He ate his meal with his family, who cheered him on happily for his examination success today. Shin almost felt like crying when he saw the heartwarming love radiating from his parents' words.
"Thanks for the food."
"Go get 'em, my boy." His father bumped fists with Shin, who returned the smirk.
"I'll get shit done and come out in first place."
"That's the spirit, my boy. I believe in you."
Rika giggled and crawled toward her big brother, who picked her up and spun her around in the air with a smile on his face. "Just wait for me, Rika. I'll make it to U.A. for sure."
He set Rika down, giving her a sweet kiss on her forehead, then turned his gaze toward his parents, who hugged him and wished him success in his exams.
"Hope you ain't forgetting anything, Shin."
"You worry a lot, honey." Nakamura gave his wife a disgusted look.
"Huh? What the hell did you just say in front of my Rika, huh?" She growled, clenching her fist.
"I'm not forgetting anything, Mom. I've got everything in place, so I'm out before you guys kill each other."
"Huh? What did you say, you little brat?" Before Sakura could snarl, Shin had exited the house. "Spoiled brat."
"And whose fault is that?" Nakamura muttered with a smirk.
"Well, that's that. Let's put our faith in him to pass the examination."
Shin had left the house around thirty minutes past seven and quickly stopped a cab coming his way.
"Where to, kid?"
"U.A. High School."
"Enrolling for the Hero Course?"
"Sure. How did you know about it, pops?"
"Never judge an old man's instinct." The man muttered, starting the engine. *'What's a fat piece of shit like him going to do there at U.A.? He's gonna fail for sure.'*
"Full speed ahead." Shin whispered from the back seat, staring at the peaceful city while his heart throbbed fast from excitement and nervousness.
The trip to U.A. was great—the morning breeze was gentle, and the weather was perfect. They arrived at U.A. High School, and Shin hopped out of the cab, paying the taxi driver and leaving the change with him.
*Finally…*
He stood at the front of U.A. High School among the crowd surging their way into the school to take their exams as well.
His jaw dropped instantly, shocked at how huge the most reliable hero school was. He realized then why they said U.A. was considered the top-ranked hero school in Japan—and even the best in the world.
He swallowed the saliva in his mouth, sweat dripping down his face as he saw the massive, tall buildings merged together. "I should take a pic right now to show Rika." He pulled out his cellphone from his pocket without shifting his gaze from the beautiful structure.
"Huh? What is that fatso doing here at U.A.?"
"Probably to snap pictures since he's fat and weak."
"Not only that, but… he's bald." The two boys laughed silently, making their way into the U.A. environment while Shin remained fixated on the huge building he'd never seen before.
Shin could probably hear them, but he paid no attention since he knew he wouldn't lose to some weak freaks like them. He pocketed his phone, took a deep breath, and clenched his fist. "Let's go." He whispered to himself with determination.
He took a bold step into the U.A. environment, sending chills through his whole body as he followed the crowd into the examination building.
"Get out of my way, you stupid Deku, before I blast the hell out of you!" A spiky-haired blonde kid with dazzling red eyes growled.
"I-I'm sorry." The short boy with green hair—probably a weak-ass nerd—bowed and reluctantly apologized, shivering.
Shin turned and watched the little drama he'd just witnessed. "Woah…"
"Huh? What are you looking at, fatso?" The blonde kid snarled at Shin. "If you don't want to die, then get your fat ass out of my way, bald freak."
"Sorry.." Shin apologized, stepping to the side for Bakugo to walk past him.
Before Shin could continue forward, the damn nerd stopped him. "I'm sorry for getting you involved in my mess… please forgive Kacchan."
"I'm not mad at all." Shin faked a smile, waving at him.
"Oh, by the way, I'm Izuku. Izuku Midoriya."
"Izuku, huh? I'm Shin. Shin Nakamura."
"It's nice to meet you, Shin."
"Same here, Izuku. Wish you success on the exam, so I'll take my leave now."
Shin advanced without waiting for Izuku to respond, realizing he wasn't the only one nervous about the exam.
"Will he be okay? He seems kind of… whatever."
Shin was filled with determination, knowing he would definitely get admitted into the U.A. But for now, he had to focus on the current situation.
He reached the door, seeing *'U.A. High School Hero Course Exam Orientation'* on a board with a red arrow pointing forward.
Sliding the huge doors open, the lights on the walls shone brightly across the enormous room. The atmosphere buzzed with chatter from examinees all around.
The crowd was intense, but Shin adjusted himself, following the mass of people into the hall and moving forward to find his seat.
"So comfortable." He hummed to himself before the huge screen lit up, capturing everyone's attention.
"Welcome to U.A. High School, all you examinee listeners tuning in… Welcome to my live show today!" A man appeared—energetic, loud, wearing shades, a headset, and sporting signature blond spiky hair.
"Everybody say, 'Hey!'"
"Hey!" Shin's voice echoed through the building when he realized he was the only one who responded. "Huh? Don't tell me…"
The crowd burst into laughter as Shin bowed his head in embarrassment, clenching his fist. "I want to die," he whispered to himself.
"That bald fatso is a comedian," some examinees muttered from the back, turning the atmosphere into a laughing stage for a minute before silence returned.
Striking a pose, Present Mic sighed before continuing. "What a refined response! Then I'll flashily present to you the rules and regulations of the practical exam! Are you ready?"
"Yeah!" Silence fell over the auditorium as Shin realized, once again, he was the only one who responded.
"Pfft!" The crowd erupted in laughter again. "What's with that fatso?"
Present Mic cleared his throat, regaining the audience's attention as he continued explaining the exam's rundown.
"As it says in the application requirements, you listeners will be conducting ten-minute mock urban battles after this!"
The huge screen behind him displayed alphabetical battle centers from A to G.
"After the presentation, you'll head to your specified battle center, okay?"
Silence fell again, but this time, Shin suppressed the urge to respond.
He looked at his assigned card. "In other words, they won't let you work with your friends, huh?" he muttered, noting that everyone was assigned to different battle centers.
Present Mic raised his right hand as the screen displayed the examination buildings and faux villains stationed in each center.
"You earn points for each of them based on their difficulty level. Your goal is to use your Quirk to earn points by immobilizing the faux villains.
"Of course, attacking other examinees or any unheroic actions are strictly prohibited! Understood?"
Silence…
"The fourth type of villain is worth zero points. That big guy's an obstacle—one in every battle center. An obstacle that'll rampage in narrow spaces.
"It's not impossible to defeat, but there's no reason to. I recommend you listeners try to avoid it," Present Mic exclaimed.
"So this whole thing is like a video game, huh?" Shin whispered to himself.
"That's all from me!" Present Mic concluded. "Finally, I'll give you listeners a present—our school motto! *Go beyond. PLUS ULTRA!" The screen displayed the motto as Shin felt chills down his spine, a smile on his face.
"Now, everyone, good luck suffering…!"
