Chapter 54 - The Silence

Thatevening, in the dining hall of the castle, a chilling stillness seemed to envelop the entire estate.

Dorian Valemont, the master of the house, sat in silence, his eyes fixed on the empty seat across from him.

When Elise entered, her expression uneasy, she said something quietly to Maera. That was all it took for Dorian to realize the person he was waiting for would not come.

After some time observing his unmoving figure, Maera let out a quiet sigh and spoke.

"Are you not going to touch your food at all, my lord?"

Silence remained her only answer.

Looking at Dorian now, and recalling what had happened that morning, she could easily guess something had occurred between him and Rosalind—something serious enough for her to refuse to join him for dinner.

"You quarreled with the lady again, didn't you?"
