Brandon's POV
The city blurred past me as I sped down the parkway. Streetlights stretched into long golden streaks across my windshield, and buildings and storefronts melted into indistinguishable shapes. The engine of my truck roared louder than usual, or maybe it just felt that way because of how hard my pulse was pounding in my ears.
I gripped the steering wheel tighter. I had to get home. I needed to see Zoe. But as much as I wished I had superpowers at that moment, I didn't. I was still human. Unfortunately, I had chosen the worst possible road to drive on at the worst possible time: Lakeside County's busiest highway.
Cars crawled forward in thick lines of traffic like sluggish ants. "Come on…" I muttered through clenched teeth. Then the red light ahead glowed brighter, and the entire line of cars came to a screeching halt. I slammed on my brakes.
