However, Johnny, in his state of fear and anxiety, didn't notice a small surveillance camera installed in the corner of the truck's interior.
Johnny quickly went to the restroom, leaned against the wall, and pulled out the cigarette he hadn't had time to smoke from his pocket.
"Click."
The cigarette was lit. He put it in his mouth, took a deep drag, inhaling it into his lungs, then exhaling it through his nostrils.
"Sigh..."
Johnny pulled out his phone, looking at his bank account balance in his phone's messages. There were only a little over 30,000 Jenny left. He thought about next month's rent and his upcoming living expenses.
"No choice. Although this might be less, at least it can solve the immediate problem."
After thinking for a while, Johnny realized he had no other channels. He could only contact that classmate who popped into his mind – a big reporter for the Independent Daily. If he gave the information to her, he would definitely get a decent income.
Having decided, Johnny scrolled through his phone's contacts, found his classmate's number, gritted his teeth and pondered for a moment more, then pressed the dial button.
He decided that after finishing work today, he would just run away and never return to this damned company again.
"Beep..."
"The number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable. Please leave a message after the beep."
"Damn it, she's not picking up."
Johnny clenched his fist. The resolve he had finally built up couldn't falter at a time like this.
"Danica, this is Johnny. I know calling you suddenly might seem rude."
"But I've discovered something incredibly important. Haven't you always been looking for big news?"
"I'm currently working at Anborella Biotechnology Company. This is definitely a super incident that meets your expectations. You might not believe it, but it actually happened right next to me..."
"I'll send some photos to your email, but you'll need to contact me personally for the rest. Also, I'm a bit short on cash right now..."
"And, my address is..."
After a long time, Johnny put down his phone, took a deep breath, and dropped the cigarette between his index finger and thumb, stepping on it to extinguish it. He wasn't in the mood to smoke anymore.
"Splash..."
Johnny stood in front of the sink, turned on the faucet, and water rushed out of the pipes with a "splash."
"Damn it, I hope everything goes smoothly."
He cupped his hands and washed his face. Looking at himself in the mirror, his gaunt face, which had looked haggard, seemed much more awake after washing his face.
"Let's go. Once I finish today, I can leave this damned place!"
Johnny shook his head, flicking the water droplets from his face and hair, and stepped out of the restroom.
"Thump!"
A sound of colliding bodies.
Johnny had just stepped out of the restroom, and before he could even react, he was directly struck by a palm strike to the back of his neck. His body instantly shook, swayed, and finally fell forward with a "thump."
But as he fell unconscious, he vaguely saw two blurry black figures standing in front of him.
"Director, the mosquito has been caught."
Two guards in black combat uniforms stood in front of Johnny's fallen body, one hand on their wireless earpieces, reporting and asking for instructions.
"Put him in the truck, and send him to headquarters."
A voice mixing both childishness and composure sounded in the earpiece, making the guards' expressions unconsciously turn serious.
"Yes, received."
The guard responded, looked at the other guard, and they nodded to each other. They lifted Johnny's body into the truck he had been moving, and bang, shut the back door of the compartment.
The two guards got into the truck and drove the heavy truck, filled with freezers, towards the Anborella Company Headquarters.
Several hours later, Anborella Company Headquarters.
A heavy truck passed through the main gate's inspection and drove into the Anborella Industrial Park, heading towards the Biotechnology Research Institute.
Inside the Biotechnology Research Institute.
"Ugh..."
Johnny, still in a coma, frowned. He felt as if he was being directly hit by a strong light. Opening his eyes, the first thing he saw was a pure white ceiling.
His eyeballs rolled. Everything around him was pure white. He felt as if he was in a spotless white paradise.
"No!"
But the pain from the back of his neck made Johnny suddenly realize. He tried to get up, but a cold sensation immediately came from his hands and feet, accompanied by a "clink" sound.
"Where is this!?"
Johnny found himself naked and tied to an operating table. His hands and feet were restrained by metal shackles, unable to move.
"He's awake."
At this moment, three white-clad figures appeared in front of the operating table. They were dressed in white uniforms, white gloves, white masks, and white hats, giving off a chilling sense of oppression.
"Who are you!?"
"What do you want!?"
"Let me go! Or I'll call the police!"
Staring at the three white-uniformed figures standing to his left and right, his pupils constricted. He was filled with terror, constantly struggling.
He could only use weak words, attempting to threaten these unknown individuals who gave him an extreme sense of danger.
"Don't worry, it's just a small operation."
Dr. Boyce said in an extremely calm voice, his eyes slightly narrowed as he placed a brainwave receiving helmet on Johnny's head.
"No, no, I don't want to..."
"You, you're breaking the law! You're killing people!"
Johnny was utterly terrified, struggling with all his might, but unfortunately, it was still futile. After the helmet was placed on him, his body convulsed, and the laboratory returned to silence.
Time flowed, eight hours later, Pegros, Pattilus.
Inside an apartment building in the Santa Fe district of Pattilus.
The first ray of sunlight in the early morning shone on the curtains, illuminating the dark room.
"Ugh..."
The slender figure lying on the bed frowned, lazily rolled over, struggled to open her eyelids and glanced at the alarm clock on the nightstand. Seeing that there was still time, she closed her eyes again.
After a series of wiggles under the covers, her right hand reached out from beneath the blankets, fumbling for the air conditioner remote on the nightstand. With a "beep," she turned off the air conditioner.
She dropped the remote with a "thump," and her right hand continued to grope on the nightstand until it found a mobile phone. She held the phone and retreated back into the covers.
"Beep..."
The sound of phone buttons came from under the covers, and a slightly unfamiliar voice sounded from the phone.
"Danica, this is Johnny. I know calling you suddenly might seem rude."
"But I..."
"Johnny!? Anborella Company!?"
Danica instantly sat up from under the covers, throwing off her blankets. Her brows furrowed slightly. She looked down at the phone in her hand and dialed back.
"Beep... Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently unavailable. Please..."
"Not answering? Still asleep?"
Danica was puzzled. She replayed the voice message on her phone. In the message, Johnny's emotions seemed very tense and anxious. He seemed to be in a very dangerous situation.
"Photos?"
Danica picked up her laptop from the other nightstand. The computer booted up, she logged into her account, and entered her email.
"There really is an email."
In Danica's email inbox, an unread email from Johnny lay there. She moved the mouse and double-clicked to open it.
It was an email with no text content, only an attachment. Danica clicked download, and was immediately scared, covering her mouth with both hands at the sight of the extremely pale dead faces in the photos.
"These are the dead people in the freezers that Johnny mentioned in his message?"
But fortunately, due to the nature of Danica's profession, her psychological resilience was much stronger than most ordinary people's. Her interest greatly increased, and she continued to click on the next photo.
"It's all the same corpse, without any Photoshop modification."
Danica quickly finished looking at all the photos in just ten seconds. After comparing them one by one, she came to this conclusion. Her interest immediately surged, and she redialed Johnny's number.
"Beep beep..."
Just as Danica thought this call wouldn't go through either, the phone unexpectedly connected.
"Johnny, where are you now!?"
"I saw those photos you sent me. I need to see you right away!"
Danica said excitedly, but no sound came from the other end of the phone. She subconsciously frowned.
"No!"
She immediately hung up the call. Remembering Johnny's tense emotions and anxious tone on the phone, a bad premonition rose in her heart.
Then, she first recorded the voice message from earlier, then transferred the photos to her phone.
After doing all this, Danica quickly washed up, put on light makeup, dressed, took a bottle of milk and a sandwich from the fridge, and hurried out of her house.
"Johnny's house is..."
Danica drove according to the area mentioned in the voice message. Johnny's house was in the westernmost suburbs of Pattilus, closer to the sea.
"Squeak..."
In Sabella District, a white SUV stopped in front of a building.
Because it was morning, the roads were crowded, and Danica took twice as long as usual to drive here.
"Click."
The car door opened, and Danica got out of the car. She closed the car door casually, took a breath of the crisp morning air, and looked up at the building in front of her.
Johnny had been working alone in the city for years. They, his classmates, hadn't been in touch for a long time. She wondered how he was doing now.
Danica followed the address Johnny left in the voice message and arrived outside a room on the third floor.
"Knock knock knock..."
She gently knocked on the door, but Danica waited for a long time, and there was no response from inside. She raised her arm again and knocked on the door.
"Bang bang bang..."
This time, she knocked harder, and the sound echoed in the quiet and cold third-floor hallway.
"Click."
Just as she was about to knock for the third time, the door next door opened.
A man with messy hair and bare upper body appeared at the doorway, facing Danica's direction, his eyes still heavy with sleep.
"Stop knocking, it's annoying early in the morning."
"That kid Johnny didn't come back all night yesterday, and his phone isn't answering. He probably stayed somewhere overnight."
The man rubbed his eyes, shaking off some of his drowsiness, and looked at Danica again.
Golden hair, flawless pale skin, sharp features, white boots, an off-white trench coat paired with a white T-shirt, and sunglasses—she exuded a fashionable aura, like a blonde model from a fashion magazine.
"Uh, excuse me, are you...?"
The man's tone immediately became polite and gentle.
Danica frowned slightly, then turned and left. But after taking five steps, she suddenly turned around and looked at the shirtless man, asking:
"Do you know where he works?"
The man heard Danica's question, unconsciously rubbed the stubble on his chin with his right hand, looked up at the ceiling of the hallway, and frowned in thought.
"I remember he said some time ago that he worked in a warehouse under a company called Anborella."
"Hey, beautiful, what is your relationship with him...?"
The man finished recalling and still wanted to ask Danica's identity, but he only saw Danica's disappearing back as she turned the corner of the hallway.
"Sigh~ forget it."
"I can't believe that useless kid Johnny actually knows such a beautiful woman."
The man sighed, returned to his room, and slammed the door shut with a "bang," going back to sleep.
Danica walked out of the building, got back into her car, and called a colleague.
"Hello, who is this?"
A woman's voice came from the phone. Danica didn't waste words and said directly:
"Mary, can you help me find Anborella Company's warehouse in Pattilus?"
"Danica? What do you need Anborella Company's warehouse for?"
"Don't ask, just tell me."
"Okay, okay, don't rush. I remember Anborella Biotechnology Company's logistics warehouse is..."
As the woman on the other end spoke, Danica quickly opened her electronic map and found her destination for this trip.
"Anborella Biotechnology Company, Logistics Warehouse!"
"Thanks, Mary."
Danica hung up the phone. The woman named Mary was her colleague at the same newspaper agency, a veritable fount of information.
She stepped on the accelerator, just about to drive to the location on the map, when her phone rang. She picked it up and saw it was a call from her editor.
"I know, I'll submit it today."
Hanging up the phone, Danica looked at the destination on the map and sighed. Forget it for today. I'd better go back to the company and submit my last news draft first. The editor is already calling to rush me.
"Buzz buzz..."
Thinking this, Danica immediately drove home, wrote the draft of her last interview with a company executive, and by the time she finished, it was already nine o'clock in the evening.
"So tired..."
Danica sent the material to her editor, then immediately stretched, got up, made herself dinner, washed up, lay on the bed, turned on the air conditioner, pulled up the covers, and fell into a deep sleep.
"Click click click..."
At three in the morning, Danica, who was sleeping, seemed to hear something that woke her from her sleep.
"Click click... click!"
Danica's drowsy eyes suddenly opened wide, and her face stiffened. It was the sound of the front door opening.
She looked at the time. It was only three in the morning. Who would be sneaking into her house at this hour?
Danica climbed out of bed, barefoot on the carpet, silently opened her room door, came to the second-floor hallway, and looked down in confusion.
"Tap... tap..."
She saw two men in black suits, one on each side, searching the living room downstairs. Another man in a black suit looked up at the second floor and quietly walked up the stairs.
