The hum of the med-bay had become a second heartbeat.
Everything was steady to a fault. Stray, Contrario....they were too steady.
Every hour felt like a repeat of the last, the lights in the room were low, diagnostics blinking amber, and the same shallow rise and fall of Contrario's chest beneath the stabilizer mask.
He hadn't moved since he was stabilized some days before today, he didn't even shake, not once.
I leaned over him, brushing a strand of his hair off his forehead. The gel pads on his temple flickered gently in sync with the lines running through Stray's containment shell.
Arielle stood just beside me, her fingers flying across the translucent holo-interface that pulsed in blue arcs around the core unit.
Then her hands slowed down till they stopped.
Her brow furrowed so tight, I almost heard the creases settle.
"What.....What is it?" I asked.
