Chapter 20 - Chapter 20.

Talia's fingers closed around Lev's. His hand was rough, warm, and real—an anchor in the sudden, cold silence.

The golden, sun-drenched world of her "perfect life" was gone, dissolved into nothing. In its place was an endless expanse of ashen gray, a void where the only landmarks were the shattered fragments of the illusion—bits of porcelain mask, splinters of a kitchen table, and dust that might have been lemon cakes. The air was thin and stung her lungs, tasting of ozone and old paper.

She was trembling, a phantom ache in her throat from the Director's grip. Her knees felt weak, the adrenaline that had held her together now draining away, leaving a hollow exhaustion.

"Lev," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I... I thought..."

"I know," he said. He didn't let go of her hand, pulling her gently to her feet. He was unsteady himself, breathing hard, the violet light in his eyes dimmed to a dull, weary lavender. The blue energy under his skin was gone, leaving only the faintest trace.

"Where... where are we?" Talia asked, pulling her gaze from his face to scan the empty gray horizon.

"Nowhere," Lev said, his voice raw. "This is what's left of his stage. A pocket dimension. A crack between worlds."

He looked around, his expression grim. "It's collapsing. The Director was the only thing holding it together. We don't have long."

Panic, cold and sharp, tried to claw its way back up her throat. Trapped. She was still trapped.

"How do we get out?"

"We find another crack," Lev said. He closed his eyes, his brow furrowing in concentration. "I can... I can feel them. The tears in reality. But they're distant."

Talia squeezed her eyes shut, trying to focus, trying to find anything familiar. She thought of Kai, his small hand in hers, his laughter in the park—no, that wasn't real. She thought of the real Kai, the one with the sugar-bird familiar and the solemn eyes, the one she'd pushed through a portal.

'Kai,' she thought, a desperate, silent plea. 'Haven Brew... please.'

For a moment, there was only the sound of her own heartbeat in the void.

Then...

DING!

The sound was so faint it was barely a whisper, a sound like a tiny bell hammered against distant glass. It was the most beautiful sound she had ever heard.

Her eyes shot open. "Did you hear that?"

Lev's head snapped toward her, his own eyes wide. "I... felt it. A pulse. What was that?"

Talia's breath hitched as a familiar, pale blue window flickered into existence in front of her. It was cracked and glitching, the text struggling to resolve.

[SYSTEM... REBOOT... 10%]

[HOST STATUS: CRITICAL]

[ANCHOR (KAI) ...DETECTED. SIGNAL: WEAK/DISTANT]

[ANCHOR (HAVEN BREW) ...DETECTED. SIGNAL: STABLE]

"It's my system," she breathed, tears of pure relief burning in her eyes. "It's back. It can find Kai."

Lev moved closer, staring at the flickering window. A faint smile touched his lips. "Of course. The café. It's your anchor. It's his anchor, too."

He looked from the system window back to her, a new spark of determination in his tired eyes. "That's our way out. It's a tether. Your connection is weak, but it's there. I can use it."

"Use it how?"

Lev stepped back, holding her hand tighter. "The system is pulling on you, trying to get you back to the café. I'm an anomaly —I can tear holes in reality. Together..."

He raised his free hand, and the violet light in his eyes began to glow again, brighter this time. Blue energy, chaotic and raw, flickered to life along his arm.

"Hold on to that feeling," he commanded, his voice strained. "Focus on Kai. On the café. I'll rip a hole straight toward that signal."

Talia nodded, closing her eyes. She focused on the system's faint pulse, on the memory of Kai's face, on the scent of coffee and cinnamon. She felt a tug, a gentle, insistent pull from a place she knew was real.

Lev snarled as he poured his own power into the void. The gray air in front of them began to shimmer, then tear. A sound like screaming metal filled the space as a new crack formed—not the Director's cold, porcelain white, but a swirling, unstable vortex of violet and gold.

"It's working!" Lev grunted, the veins on his neck standing out as he fought to widen the tear. "But it won't be stable. I don't know where it will drop us, only that it's... closer to him."

"It's enough," Talia said, her voice firm.

The portal snapped open, a howling maw of light. Lev staggered, his energy flaring.

"Now, Talia! Go!"

He didn't let go of her hand. He didn't push her. He lunged with her, pulling them both from the collapsing gray void and into the blinding, unknown light.

Kai sat on the counter, his small legs swinging, G2 perched on his shoulder like a tiny, sparkling sentinel. Across from him, Maris was meticulously organizing the mugs, her brown hair tied back with a strip of cloth. She hummed a cheerful, tuneless song as she worked.

"This one smells like old lavender," she announced, holding a cup to her nose. "And this one…" she sniffed again, "...is just sad. Like a rainy Tuesday."

Kai nodded seriously, tracking the café's status on his system window.

[Emotional Hearth Output: 90% (Stable)]

He felt a tiny spark of pride. He was doing it. He was keeping the café safe, just as he'd promised.

Maris hopped off her stool. "Okay, Acting Anchor," she said, tapping the counter with a grin. "We have a problem. Your 'Memory Brew' was great, but we're out of those sunflower petals. And pretty much everything else. If another guest comes in, we can't serve them."

Kai's face fell. He looked at his inventory. [Access: LIMITED]. Maris was right. The shelves were almost bare.

Before he could answer, the café lights flickered violently. The [Warning: External Instability Detected Nearby] message on his screen flashed from yellow to a sudden, pulsing red.

G2 squawked in alarm, fluttering into the air. Maris gasped and grabbed Kai's arm.

Chime-CHIME-SLAM!

The front door, which had only ever opened with a gentle ring, was thrown open so hard it slammed against the inside wall.

A boy stumbled in, collapsing onto the floorboards in a heap of torn rags and shuddering limbs. He was older than Kai, maybe Maris's age, but he seemed smaller, his body curled in on itself as if expecting a blow.

"Please," he sobbed, his voice cracking. "Please, hide me. It's... it's just... please!"

He was absolutely terrified, crying so hard he could barely breathe. He didn't seem to be chased by anything—he seemed to be fleeing the world itself.

Before Kai could even react, the café did.

[Guest Shelter Protocol Activated.]

[Cleansing Sequence Engaged.]

A soft, golden mist poured down from the ceiling, wrapping the new boy in a warm blanket of light. The dirt and grime on his clothes dissolved. Beneath the filth was a thin boy with a mop of unruly, ash-blond hair, practically swimming in the torn, dark tunic that served as his clothes. The frantic, shallow gasps of his breathing began to slow, just slightly.

"It's okay!" Maris said, rushing forward and kneeling beside him. "You're safe now. This place... it protects you".

"S-safe?" the boy whispered, peaking out from behind his hands. His eyes—wide, pale gray, and currently red-rimmed—were flooded with tears. "There's no such thing as safe."

"There is here," Kai said. His voice was small, but it held the authority of the café itself. He hopped off the counter and stood a few feet away. "Welcome to Haven Brew Café."

The boy flinched at his voice, scrambling backward until he hit the leg of a table. He pulled his knees to his chest. "I... I'm sorry. I shouldn't... I just ran. I'm Elian. I'm not... I'm not brave at all."

"You don't have to be brave to be welcome," Maris said gently, her 'Nature Affinity' seeming to calm the air around him.

Elian looked around the café, his eyes darting from the glowing lights to the warm fireplace, as if he couldn't believe any of it was real. His gaze landed on a dusty, empty crate in the corner, and he seemed to almost... recognize it.

"This place..." he whispered, his tears slowing. He reached out a trembling hand and lightly touched the wood of the old crate.

He flinched back, snatching his hand away.

"What is it?" Kai asked.

"Th-this box," Elian stammered, his eyes filling with fresh tears. "It's so... sad. It... it remembers being left behind. In a fire."

Kai and Maris stared.

"You... felt that?" Maris asked. "From a box?"

"I d-don't know," Elian cried, pressing his hands to his temples. "I just... do. Things. They... they yell at me. This mug," he pointed at the one Maris had called 'sad,' "it misses the hand that used to hold it. And that... that coffee machine..." he looked at the espresso machine, "...it's proud."

Kai's jaw dropped.

DING!

A new window, visible only to Kai, shimmered into view.

Kai looked at Maris, a slow smile spreading across his face. Maris, seeing his expression, tilted her head, then her eyes lit up as she put the pieces together.

"Wait a minute," she said, looking at Elian. "You can... feel things from objects?"

Elian nodded miserably. "It's awful. Everything is so loud and broken."

"Not here," Maris said, her grin widening. She grabbed his arm and pulled him (gently) to his feet. "Here, that's not awful. Here, that's useful."

She pointed to the café's pantry, where shelves stood mostly empty. "We're an 'Anchor' and a 'Taster,'" she said, gesturing to Kai and herself. "But we have no idea what's in all the old jars, or where to find more. But you..."

Elian looked at her, confused and still shaking.

"Elian," Kai said, stepping forward. "We need to find things... things worth remembering"

Elian looked from Kai's serious face to Maris's excited one.

"You... you mean... you want me to...?"

"We need you," Kai said. "You're our new assistant. If... if you want to be."

Elian stared, his lip wobbling. He wasn't being told to be quiet. He wasn't being called crazy. He was being needed.

Slowly, hiccupping back a sob, he nodded.
