After seeing all the changes on my status, I finally got out of bed in my apartment in Lviv and stretched, shaking off the last embers of sleep. After returning from the battle yesterday, I'd decided to teleport to my girlfriend's house to celebrate.
Bad decision.
I was met with so much vitriol—cussed out for abandoning her and not communicating for over a year. She said she hated how I'd left her high and dry and expected to just come back and be "buddy-buddy."
I tried apologizing, but she wasn't having it. She'd thought I was dead—killed in some dungeon without her—and had to find out I was alive by watching a stream where I was nearly killed over and over.
She promptly broke up with me, then informed me she'd already moved on and was in another relationship. She wasn't going to jeopardize it for a "suicidal idiot."
Screams and arguments flew back and forth before she finally demanded I leave her home and never contact her again. Seeing how serious she was, I teleported out to a bar and started drowning the pain in bottles of vodka and whatever else I could find.
Eventually, I made my way back home and slept like a log until now.
"I guess I'm maidenless once more," I said, snickering a little to myself. Deep down, after the supernatural reveal, I knew we'd eventually go our separate ways. I was too driven—too obsessed with improving my power—and I wouldn't stop or slow down until I reached a level I could be satisfied with.
She wasn't as talented or driven. At times, she even slowed me down. In this kind of world, my partner would need to be my equal or stronger, with the same relentless drive—something she didn't have.
So, truthfully, no hard feelings. I just wished we'd ended it on better terms.
Especially now that I can finally feel it.
My ceiling.
I won't be able to rush through power increases like before without special circumstances or artifacts. I'll still improve, but it'll be at a snail's pace compared to the meteoric rise I once had.
In a way, that's good. It gives me the chance to truly refine what I have, to settle down, learn, and innovate with the abilities I've already gained—and those I can still learn.
I made my way downstairs and stepped outside my apartment building—only to find myself in a new, stark white landscape with nine other people, all looking just as bewildered as I was.
I turned my head, already dreading what I'd see.
There he was: the Faceless One, in his iconic black robe and hood, wearing a shit-eating grin.
"Fun entrance, right?" he said.
I wasn't paying attention to his words. Once again, I was reminded of the sheer disparity in power between us. He'd been able to kidnap me—and all of humanity's strongest—on a whim.
Well, it's to be expected. He's a transmigrant who's been alive for hundreds of years and climbed to the pinnacle of power in this universe. If it took him that long…
It'll take me just as much time to do the same.
"What is the meaning of this!" screamed Purity, igniting her powers and hovering in the air. Light gathered around her fists as she threatened to unleash it.
"Oh, calm your tits, woman. Just wanted to get this over with. This is the Power Rankings Rewards Event—also the rankings and rewards for the Raid against my friend. And just so you know," he added, his tone dropping to something dangerously casual, "this is being streamed across all dimensions connected to Earth, and Earth itself. So I'd calm down before you make a fool of yourself in front of every being in existence."
She promptly powered down and melted back into the crowd.
He sighed, then his eyes landed on me. Before I could react, he was in front of me—and in a shocking display of strength, wrapped me in a crushing hug despite my attempts to escape.
"Lil' bro! I'm so happy you survived that punishment I put on you and came out stronger. Great Red was impressed after you went into your second phase. The old lizard said for a moment you felt like a Super Devil-level being. You impressed me with your lethality. If you'd been around during the Great War, the devils would've whispered horror stories about you."
He was rambling now, squeezing tighter. "I bragged about you and your potential to Red and Yahweh—they dismissed you, but I knew what I saw. And now I feel vindicated.
"You also won me the Fruit of Eden from Yahweh and a blank dimension from Red. Sure, you won't get any of it, but you made me a very rich god."
The fucker was definitely doing this on purpose.
He finally released me, and I promptly fell to the floor. I flashed back to my feet and gave him the middle finger.
He just laughed and turned back to the group.
"Anyway, folks, we're here for the main event. This is the first Ranking Rewards event in history. It'll be a once-a-decade thing, but anyone in the Top 10 will be disqualified from future rewards—it wouldn't be fair to keep empowering the same people every time. A new generation needs room to grow, too.
"What you're all here for now is the Top 100 rankings. Everyone on the list will receive a substantial boost in energy control and a slight comprehension boost."
He then proceeded to list the Top 100 humans. All were at minimum High Class, with some Ultimate Classes toward the top. It went on long enough that we started socializing among ourselves. I struck up a conversation with Gojo Satoru and Geto Suguru about cursed energy applications and ways to unlock a Domain Expansion.
"And finally," the Faceless One's voice cut through the chatter, "what you've all been waiting for: the Top 10 strongest of humanity."
