Chapter 80 - Chapter 79 – Into the Abyss

The wind howled through the desolate landscape, carrying with it the scent of rain and a strange, foreboding chill. Lucian, Daen, and the child—still unconscious but breathing steadily—moved cautiously through the forest, the weight of their recent victory pressing on their shoulders. Despite the high priest's defeat, the serpent's power was far from vanquished. The ritual had not only disturbed the serpent's slumber but had also weakened the barriers that had kept it contained for centuries. The battle had just begun.

Lucian glanced up at the sky, the thick clouds swirling above them like a dark omen. It was as though the heavens themselves were preparing for a confrontation. He knew that the serpent's influence was growing stronger with each passing moment, its tendrils reaching into every corner of the world. If they did not find a way to stop it, everything would be consumed.

"We can't afford to rest," Lucian muttered to Daen, who was carrying the child with surprising ease. Daen didn't respond immediately, his expression hard as he scanned the horizon. His axe was still at his side, bloodied but ready.

"We need to take her somewhere safe," Daen said after a pause. "The child... she's not just a victim. She's part of this. We need answers, Lucian. And we need to find a way to stop the serpent before it's too late."

Lucian nodded, but his mind was already racing. The child, their mysterious companion, had been at the center of the high priest's ritual. Her role had been unclear, but the power surrounding her had been unmistakable. There was something within her, something ancient, that the Serpent's Children had sought to harness. And now, with the high priest dead, it was unclear who—or what—was truly in control.

As they pushed deeper into the forest, the feeling of unease grew stronger. The trees, gnarled and twisted as though scarred by time itself, loomed over them like silent sentinels. Their journey was no longer one of pursuit, but of survival. Every step felt like it was taking them further into a trap. Lucian felt as though the earth itself was conspiring against them, the air thick with magic and malice.

"We should head for the mountains," Lucian said, breaking the silence. "It's where the old temple is—where the ancients once sealed the serpent away. It's our best chance of finding something that can help us."

Daen glanced at him. "The mountains. That's days away. And with the serpent growing stronger, it's too dangerous to wait."

"I know," Lucian said. "But we don't have much of a choice. We need to find the artifact—the one that can end the serpent's reign. If it exists, it's there."

Daen nodded, though he still looked uncertain. "I don't like it. But if you're right, it's our only shot."

And so, they pressed on, moving with urgency. The forest became denser as the hours passed, and the sound of distant thunder rumbled across the sky. It was as if the very elements were turning against them. The air was heavy, thick with magic. Lucian could feel it—an oppressive presence, a dark force pushing against them.

As night fell, they set up camp in a small clearing. Lucian kept watch while Daen prepared a fire. The child remained in Daen's arms, her breathing slow but steady, her face pale, but peaceful. For a moment, Lucian allowed himself to relax, to close his eyes and take a breath. The fatigue weighed heavily on him, but his mind refused to rest.

He thought about the serpent. About the priest's words. It was more than a creature—it was an ancient power, a being that had lived through the ages, its influence stretching back before the rise of the first kingdoms. The Serpent's Children had been its followers, but it was clear that something darker was at play. The serpent was not just a force of nature—it was something more, something terrifying.

And the child. What was her connection to all of this? Why had the serpent chosen her?

He turned to Daen. "What do you think she is? Why is the serpent after her?"

Daen looked down at the child, his expression softening. "I don't know. But I've seen something like this before, in the old texts. Children born under certain signs, with bloodlines that are linked to the ancient powers. They're... vessels, Lucian. Hosts for great forces. But what kind of force? I don't know."

The thought sent a chill down Lucian's spine. They were dealing with something far beyond anything they had ever faced. But there was no turning back now. They had to press on.

As they sat by the fire, the flames crackling softly in the night air, the earth suddenly trembled beneath them. It was subtle at first, a low vibration that they could feel in their bones. Then it grew stronger, more insistent, until the ground beneath them seemed to be alive, writhing with dark energy.

Lucian stood up, his sword drawn, his senses on high alert. Daen was already on his feet, his axe in hand. "What is it?" Lucian asked, his voice low.

"I don't know," Daen said. "But something's coming. I can feel it."

Suddenly, the ground split open with a violent crack, and from the chasm rose an enormous figure, a massive creature cloaked in shadow. It was unlike anything they had ever seen. Its eyes glowed with an otherworldly light, and its body seemed to shimmer with a dark mist. The serpent's power was here, manifesting itself in this creature, this monster of nightmare and magic.

Lucian's heart pounded in his chest. The serpent had found them. It had come for the child.

The creature let out a terrible roar, shaking the earth, and its massive form coiled around the clearing. Daen stepped forward, ready to fight, but Lucian grabbed his arm.

"Daen, don't. It's not real. It's an illusion," Lucian said urgently, his mind racing. "It's the serpent. It's trying to control us."

But it was too late. The creature's enormous tail slammed into the ground, sending a shockwave through the air. The force knocked them both off their feet. Lucian's sword flew from his hand as he struggled to regain his balance.

The creature advanced, its massive form closing in on them, its mouth opening wide to reveal rows of razor-sharp teeth. But Lucian, despite the overwhelming fear coursing through him, didn't give in. He reached out with his senses, searching for the truth beneath the illusion.

The serpent's power—its magic—was strong, but Lucian was stronger. He focused, blocking out the terrifying image of the creature, focusing instead on the source of its magic. The serpent was using its power to warp reality, to create fear and panic. But if Lucian could break through it, if he could sever the serpent's hold on their minds, they could survive.

With a cry of determination, Lucian reached deep within himself, tapping into the strength he had found on this long, grueling journey. He could feel the magic twisting around him, but he fought back, his will a sharp edge slicing through the illusions.

And then, with a sudden burst of energy, the creature dissipated, vanishing into thin air. The chasm in the ground closed as if it had never been there. The forest was silent once more.

Lucian fell to his knees, exhausted but relieved. "It's gone," he whispered.

But Daen didn't respond. He was staring at the child, his expression filled with dread.

Lucian followed his gaze, and his stomach turned cold.

The child's eyes were open, glowing with an unnatural light. She was no longer the innocent girl they had rescued. She was something else—something powerful, and ancient, and terrifying.

The serpent's influence was no longer hidden. It was inside her.
