## Chapter 2 — Daddy Has Arrived
The sky was as gray as Renfield's soul that morning. He was walking through the rubble of an old toy store, distracted, when he heard a scream tearing through the dead silence of the city.
— HELP! SOMEONE, PLEASE!
Renfield stopped. It wasn't common to hear cries for help around here — most people had already given up screaming. Curious, he climbed onto a high rock, from where he had a good view of the chaos: a girl, with short, disheveled hair and wide eyes, was struggling with all her might to keep her distance from a horde of zombies. Her name, he would later discover, was Runa Singleton. She swung a baseball bat like it was a legendary sword, screaming and cursing the undead with a creativity that even Renfield respected. "Get out of here, you half-baked maggots!" she yelled, hitting a skull with a dry crack. Renfield smiled, took the sniper rifle off his back and sat calmly on the rock, crossing his legs as if he were at a picnic. He aimed with surgical precision, and before pulling the trigger, he announced loudly: "Daddy's here, kids!" Bang. A zombie fell. Bang. Another one fell to the ground. Bang. Another one, and another one, until all that was left was silence and the smell of gunpowder. Runa, panting, looked up, searching for her savior. When her eyes met Renfield, she felt her heart race. He was there, with his stylish eyepatch, mocking smile and an air of someone who owed nothing to anyone. He was the antihero of her dreams — or nightmares.
Renfield stepped down from the rock with the calm of someone who had all the time in the world. He stopped in front of her, bowed in a theatrical bow and said:
"Do you need help with anything else, princess of the apocalypse?"
Runa, still out of breath, smiled back, feeling her face flush under the dirt.
"I think now I just need a name for my savior."
Renfield winked with his good eye and replied:
"Renfield Ratley. But you can call me Daddy."
She laughed, delighted and a little embarrassed. Little did she know that, at that moment, the chaos of the world seemed a little less scary.
And for Renfield, perhaps surviving had just gotten more interesting.
