Chapter 52 — The Shadow in the Mirror
It was a strange thing, Caelan thought, that the mind could become heavier than the body even while an Apex-stage metal monkey was trying to erase you from existence.
He did not stop moving.
Chrome Eidon's black cables ripped through the air around him, vanishing into cracks in space and returning from directions that should not have existed. Caelan twisted aside before one could touch the silver-white plates of the Azure armor, Stellar Movement carrying him across the battlefield in a flash. Razorstag's weapon-form burned in his hand as he brought it across another incoming strand.
The living blade struck.
The cable snapped away before it could curl around him.
Caelan was already gone.
A black laser scorched through the place where his helmet had been a heartbeat earlier.
Archoniel swept down from above, radiant shield raised, forcing Chrome Eidon to turn long enough for Caelan to reposition.
Caelan should have been thinking only about the fight.
Usually, he would have been.
Yet the thoughts kept returning.
Not the old question.
He knew what he was.
That uncertainty had ended when he evolved.
He was not the original Caelan Ardyn.
He was not secretly a human cultivator who had somehow been transformed.
He was an Aetherkin born from the legend of the Azure Knight, carrying memories that belonged partly to a life he had lived only through inheritance.
Knowing the answer had not made it painless.
If anything, certainty gave the question sharper edges.
Some memories were unquestionably his.
Han Shuren standing outside his room with breakfast because Caelan had trained through the night again. Lin Rue scolding him while slipping extra food onto his plate. Chen Hao pretending not to be impressed when Caelan mastered something too quickly. The Sect Head arguing with him, training him, watching him with the weary affection of someone who had inherited responsibility for a child far too clever for his own good.
Those belonged to the thirteen-year-old life from which this version of him had been shaped.
Then there were the others.
Lyra laughing.
Guang Lian speaking beneath falling petals.
Friends he recognized without ever having met.
Battles he remembered winning with techniques he had never personally learned.
Years that belonged to the original man somewhere in another universe.
Caelan blocked another dark bolt with a barrier of compressed wind.
The impact burst around him.
Focus.
The answer to what those memories meant would not arrive in the middle of a battlefield.
And brooding about them would not make Chrome Eidon less Apex.
A cable appeared behind him.
Eyes of Fate warned him first.
Caelan ducked.
The black strand passed overhead and erased the upper half of a ruined tower behind him.
"You're slowing down, blondie!" Chrome Eidon sang.
Caelan looked up.
"You've been saying that for several minutes."
Eidon clutched his metallic chest.
"Such cruelty!"
Razorstag flashed.
A narrow crescent of wind struck Chrome Eidon's shoulder.
The polished adamantite sparked.
A thin cut appeared.
Eidon's smile vanished.
Caelan felt no satisfaction.
Not yet.
A scratch on an Apex creature did not constitute victory.
Especially when that creature could end the battle with one clean hit.
Archoniel crashed into Chrome Eidon from the opposite side, radiant shield slamming against metal with a thunderclap.
Eidon barely shifted.
One golden fist struck the shield.
BOOM.
Archoniel was thrown backward through the air.
"Michael!" Yuto shouted from below.
The celestial warrior recovered before hitting the ground, wings opening sharply.
"I'm fine!"
He was not entirely fine.
But he was still fighting.
Caelan watched him for half a second.
Archoniel's attention immediately returned to Yuto.
Always Yuto.
Even while facing something vastly stronger than himself.
Even knowing Arachne had chosen Yuto and Michael specifically.
There was no hesitation in him.
No question about whether the bond was real enough.
He simply protected him.
Caelan felt something uncomfortable stir beneath his armor.
Not envy.
Recognition, perhaps.
He remembered bonds he had inherited.
He had bonds he had made himself.
There was a difference.
But perhaps one did not invalidate the other.
Another cable tore toward them.
Caelan vanished.
Archoniel folded one wing and dropped beneath it.
They landed together amid broken stone.
Back to back.
Archoniel raised his sword.
"You all right?"
Caelan glanced toward Chrome Eidon.
"Define all right."
"Still alive."
"Then apparently."
Archoniel almost laughed.
Chrome Eidon floated ahead of them, cables spreading behind him like a nest of black serpents.
Caelan tightened his grip on Razorstag.
"I don't know whether we can beat him."
Archoniel was silent for a moment.
Then his shield rose.
"We don't have to."
Caelan looked sideways.
Archoniel's gaze remained on Eidon.
"We have to keep him here."
The angel's voice was calm.
"Give everyone else their chance. Protect Yuto. Protect the city. If winning comes after that, good."
Caelan stared at him for a moment.
Then a quiet laugh escaped beneath the helmet.
Archoniel glanced toward him.
"What?"
"Nothing."
Caelan raised Razorstag.
"That simply sounded familiar."
Then Chrome Eidon attacked.
And neither of them had another spare moment for philosophy.
From the city wall, Renji hated watching.
He had hated it from the moment the battle began.
Below him, creatures he now knew were fighting everywhere.
Roadstreakers he had spoken to during his shifts.
Gloomimps who had stolen his apron and returned it with bells attached.
Prideclaws who guarded Eggshell Haven at night.
Even the ridiculous Scrapreavers whose conversations seemed to consist mostly of shouting and punching things.
Gilded Hollow had stopped being merely a safe city.
It had become somewhere they knew.
And now it was being torn apart because Arachne wanted them.
Renji's fingers tightened around the Resonance Linker.
"This is because of us."
Beside him, Daichi said nothing.
He had been staring down at the battlefield too.
Vellum was fighting Arachne in the square.
Luminel was still keeping Dreadtide occupied despite the condition of his wing.
Stormmane had somehow found himself racing through explosions on Quickflare's back.
Caelan and Archoniel were fighting an Apex.
And Daichi was standing behind a wall.
Part of him knew why.
They had been holding themselves back for the right moment.
Throwing everything into the first wave would only have let Arachne see every card they possessed.
That had been sensible.
Responsible.
But there was a point at which sensible planning became an excuse to keep watching.
Daichi looked down at Clark.
The little sea-lion Aetherkin stood beside him, unusually silent.
"I keep telling myself to wait until I'm sure."
Clark looked up.
Daichi swallowed.
"Sure it's the right decision. Sure I know what to do. Sure I won't make things worse."
Renji glanced toward him.
Daichi's hands trembled.
"But that's not responsibility."
His Resonance Linker began to glow.
Daichi stared at it.
"Responsibility isn't waiting until nothing can go wrong."
The light strengthened.
"It's doing what people are relying on you to do even when you're frightened you'll get it wrong."
Clark's eyes widened.
The Virtue Sigil inside the Linker blazed.
Not flickered.
Not pulsed.
Awakened.
Completely.
Luminel's earlier words returned to Daichi.
The virtue has to become real enough to matter.
Daichi looked at Clark.
"You ready?"
Clark smiled.
"Finally."
Daichi raised the Resonance Linker.
"Clark!"
Light erupted around the small Aetherkin.
The Linker forced the first bypass.
Clark's body expanded enormously, white fur spreading over a powerful marine form as long saber-like tusks emerged from his jaws. A horn of crystalline ice formed above his brow. Blue crystal spikes erupted along his back.
Clark evolved into Tidemaw.
The Adult-stage sea beast roared.
But the light did not stop.
Daichi's Sigil of Responsibility burned brighter.
Tidemaw turned toward him.
Daichi did not command it.
He did not need to.
The bond answered.
The second evolution began.
Tidemaw's immense body rose into radiant water and ice.
Armor formed.
His proportions shifted, growing larger and more imposing as the legend behind him moved beyond merely surviving the sea and toward commanding it. Frozen plates covered his body like regal armor. Great tusks curved forward beneath a crown-like formation of ice, and an enormous war hammer condensed from seawater and frost into his grasp.
The light shattered.
An Elite stood where the Juvenile Clark had been moments earlier.
Tidemaw evolved into Stormtusk.
Daichi stared upward.
Stormtusk lowered the huge hammer onto one shoulder.
"Well?"
Daichi blinked.
"You're enormous."
Stormtusk grinned.
"Responsible observation."
Daichi laughed despite everything.
Then he looked toward the battlefield.
"Let's go."
Stormtusk raised his hammer.
Water gathered around him.
"About time."
Renji watched Daichi's complete awakening.
Then looked down at his own Linker.
The Sigil of Loyalty was glowing.
But not like Daichi's.
Not completely.
Something was still missing.
Renji knew it.
Alex knew it too.
Frostfang stepped beside him.
"Don't force it."
Renji looked toward him.
"What?"
"The Sigil."
Frostfang's orange eyes remained steady.
"It's not ready."
Renji frowned.
Below them, another explosion shook the city.
"Then we use what is ready."
He raised the Resonance Linker.
Frostfang smiled.
The Linker activated.
Unlike Alex's natural evolution days earlier, this light came from outside the Aetherkin as much as within him—a forced evolutionary bypass, the device pushing his current Adult baseline one stage higher.
Frost swallowed his body.
Crystal spread.
The enormous white wolf rose onto a larger, more heavily muscled frame. The crystalline armor along his shoulders thickened into brutal jagged plates. Massive dark-blue claws lengthened. Ice formed around his forelegs and jaws as the cold pouring from him became intense enough to frost the stone beneath Renji's boots.
Frostfang evolved into Frostclaw.
Elite.
Temporary.
Renji's Sigil flashed.
For one heartbeat, he thought it might continue.
That the Loyalty Sigil might seize the evolution and force Frostclaw onward into Cryowolf.
Apex.
The light swelled.
Then stopped.
No second evolution came.
Instead, the Sigil's power poured into Frostclaw as reinforcement.
His crystal armor brightened.
Cold rolled across the wall.
Frostclaw flexed his enormous claws.
Renji looked down at the Linker.
"Not yet."
Frostclaw turned his head.
"Doesn't matter."
Renji met his eyes.
Frostclaw lowered himself slightly.
"Elite is enough for today."
Renji smiled.
"You're getting arrogant."
"I learned from Caelan."
That was difficult to dispute.
Renji looked toward the battlefield.
Yuto was below them.
So were Caelan, Daichi, Stormtusk, Michael, and everyone else.
He had spent so much of his life thinking loyalty meant keeping Yuto close enough that nothing could reach him.
Now he understood that sometimes loyalty meant stepping away from him.
Because someone else needed you too.
Renji placed one hand against Frostclaw's shoulder.
"Everyone I care about is down there."
Frostclaw's eyes hardened.
"Then they're mine too."
They moved.
Stormtusk went first, crashing from the wall in a torrent of water.
Frostclaw followed in a storm of ice.
Renji and Daichi raced for the lower defensive route behind them.
The battle had just gained two Elite defenders.
One temporary.
One born from a fully awakened virtue.
And for the first time since Arachne's army reached Gilded Hollow, the balance shifted.
Arachne noticed.
Of course she noticed.
She noticed nearly everything.
The spider queen moved through Vellum's attacks with maddening grace, her silver-white hair sweeping behind her as strands of razor webbing sliced through broken stone around them. One hand shaped a narrow dark blade from condensed web and shadow.
She swung.
Vellum twisted aside.
The blade passed close enough to shave a piece from the outer edge of his robe.
He looked down.
"My tailor is going to invoice you."
Arachne laughed.
Then Stormtusk's roar rolled across the city.
A wave of seawater crashed through a group of enemy Adults, and a second later Frostclaw struck another formation from the side, ice erupting around his crystal claws.
Arachne's smile thinned.
"How adorable."
Vellum's golden eyes followed the new arrivals.
"Expensive."
Arachne looked back at him.
"What?"
"Employee development."
She stared.
Vellum shrugged inside the shell.
"Good investments appreciate."
Arachne attacked again.
Webbing cut toward him from three directions.
Vellum released Nightmare Syndrome.
Black mist erupted around him and swallowed the first strand. Eyes opened throughout the darkness.
Arachne's blade cut through the second.
The third struck the ground.
Vellum moved away just before it split the stone.
For several exchanges, neither spoke.
Arachne was faster.
Sharper.
More experienced in killing things that fought back.
Vellum possessed power of his own, old and deeply unpleasant, but he was working hard simply to stop her from turning him into a collection of expensive shell fragments.
Arachne knew it.
That was what bothered him most.
She was not fighting wildly.
She was measuring him.
Every dodge.
Every shadow technique.
Every delay before he countered.
She wanted to know how much effort it would take to kill him.
Vellum disliked being assessed as inventory.
"You know," Arachne said, circling, "you really would make an interesting meal."
Vellum's golden eyes narrowed.
"I prefer investor."
"Crunchy exterior."
"Merchant prince."
"Dark center."
"Entrepreneur."
Arachne smiled.
"Rich in essence."
Vellum stopped answering.
That part was less funny.
A webblade flashed.
He barely avoided it.
Another strand curled behind him.
Nightmare mist intercepted it, but Arachne's fingers tightened and the thread ripped through the darkness anyway.
Vellum staggered.
His shell remained intact.
Barely.
Arachne's eyes sharpened.
There.
That was what she had wanted to know.
Vellum understood.
Wonderful.
Inside the shell, his thoughts became considerably less composed than his voice.
All right.
He unleashed another wave of nightmare darkness.
Grand Archive.
Arachne sliced through it.
You chose those children for something.
Vellum rolled aside as a blade cut through the place he had occupied.
Presumably something important.
He fired a concentrated beam of dark energy.
Arachne bent backward beneath it and returned three threads in the same motion.
Vellum blocked two.
The third carved a line across the street beside him.
Any time you'd like to demonstrate why investing in them was a brilliant decision would be appreciated.
Arachne landed gracefully.
Vellum steadied himself.
She smiled.
He smiled back in the only way a shadow-filled egg could.
Neither believed the other's expression.
Then a roar shook the city.
Stormtusk's hammer came down somewhere beyond the square.
Ice exploded from Frostclaw's claws.
Archoniel's holy light split the clouds.
And high above them, a fully armored Caelan Ardyn crossed blades with an Apex creature that should have been able to crush him.
Vellum's golden eyes brightened.
Perhaps the miracle was not pending after all.
Perhaps it had simply arrived in pieces.
