"Leon," she gasped once more, eyes darting nervously toward the guards just a few steps away. "Stop. We can't—"
"I know," he whispered, voice low and even. "Not yet."
Their silence was a compact.
It wasn't until the guards rolled their weight, turning ever so slightly away, that he moved—moving through the archway as a moon shadow. Not a single sound gave away their escape.
Sona held him fast, her heart racing fiercely, torn between terror and exhilaration at the stolen instant.
The hallway stretched out in dimness, illuminated only by moonlight that filtered through high-stained-glass windows and cast broken colors on chill stone. With no hesitation, the Duke led her quickly into a tight alleyway, where ivy crawled up stone walls and ancient tapestries stretched motionless like silent keepers of centuries of secrets.
Step by step, they pushed on.
