Chapter 141 - 134) The Great Sage has returned

...

{3rd Pov}

When Rem suddenly saw a figure appear before her after Subaru's disappearance, her body stiffened with shock and her instincts immediately pushed her into a state of alertness.

She did not recognize the individual, but the timing of the appearance was far too suspicious to ignore.

Her heart tightened with unease, and she instantly took a defensive stance, prepared to act if necessary.

"Where is Subaru-kun?" Rem demanded, her sharp voice filled with both fear and determination. Her eyes locked onto the mysterious woman standing in front of her.

The woman possessed dazzling golden hair that shimmered faintly under the light, and her eyes shared the same golden hue, radiating an intimidating brilliance.

Her face was unnaturally beautiful, so striking that Rem almost faltered, but the heavy aura surrounding her was far more unsettling.

There was a distinct air of arrogance and superiority in the woman's posture and expression, as if she naturally looked down upon everyone in her presence.

Even more alarming to Rem was the strange phenomenon occurring around her.

The very mana in the air was being drained away at an alarming pace.

The sensation was disturbingly familiar, immediately reminding her of Reinhardt, who was said to unconsciously absorb mana from the environment, turning himself into something akin to a mana black hole.

The fact that this woman displayed a similar ability instantly raised the threat level in Rem's mind.

If she truly possessed a power comparable to Reinhardt's, then her strength was extraordinary and far beyond anything Rem could contend with alone.

"Be at ease, Oni. My father is merely having a conversation with your Subaru," the woman replied calmly, her tone confident and dismissive, as though Rem's tension and hostility were insignificant.

"Who are you?" Rem pressed sharply, unwilling to let her guard down.

The woman smirked at the blunt question, her lips curving in a manner that conveyed both amusement and superiority. "I am the Great Spirit of Yang, Gloria. As for my father… he is the one known to you as the Great Sage."

The name struck Rem like a bolt of lightning.

She widened her eyes in disbelief, her mind racing as she processed the claim.

The Great Sage was one of the three great heroes who had sealed away the Witch of Envy four centuries ago.

Among the three heroes, the Sage was shrouded in the deepest layer of mystery.

Compared to the Divine Dragon Volcanica and the First Sword Saint Reid Astrea, whose feats were well-documented in legends, the Great Sage remained a figure hidden behind veils of uncertainty.

In the world's records and passed-down stories, the Sage was often described with reverence, but the details of their identity had never been confirmed.

What little was known was vague at best. It was firmly believed that the Great Sage's name was Shaula, yet even that was an uncertain point debated by scholars.

No one knew whether the Sage was male or female, nor had anyone been able to verify their true appearance. However majority considered they to be a male.

The only universally acknowledged fact was that the Sage resided within the Pleiades Watchtower, an ancient and enigmatic structure, eternally guarding the place where the Witch of Envy remained sealed.

The Sage was said to be the embodiment of wisdom itself, a being of near-omniscience who possessed an answer to every conceivable problem.

This reputation gave them an almost divine status, though curiously, they were not as widely worshipped as Volcanica or Reid.

Nevertheless, their name carried the weight of legend, and their existence was accepted as truth throughout the world.

That was precisely why Rem found herself struggling to believe Gloria's words.

It was incomprehensible that a figure so deeply hidden in myth, one who had not revealed themselves to anyone in centuries, would suddenly allow their existence to be exposed so casually to her and Subaru.

The thought that the Great Sage had personally involved themselves in their affairs seemed absurd.

But more than that, there was something else gnawing at Rem's mind, something that made her suspicion grow even stronger.

The resemblance. Gloria had claimed that her father was the Great Sage, but the Sage she imagined should have been a being that one would want to worship upon seeing.

Then...Why… why did the Great Sage, a being wrapped in ancient mystery and legend, appear to possess a face identical to Subaru?

The strange and uncharacteristic way Subaru had been behaving throughout the day was already unsettling enough for Rem, and the fact that his actions made little sense only deepened her concern.

Subaru was someone she trusted more than anyone, someone whose quirks she had grown used to, but this time his odd conduct carried a heaviness that put her on edge.

Even so, there was at least one thing Rem felt she could firmly recognize—Gloria was without question a Great Spirit.

Rem was not a practitioner of Spirit Arts herself, but she had dealt with spirits on many occasions in the past and had gained a certain amount of understanding and intuition about them.

Furthermore, as an Oni, she possessed a natural affinity and heightened sensitivity toward the movement of mana in her surroundings.

That instinct told her Gloria's aura and presence were authentic, unmistakably that of a being far removed from ordinary humans.

Without any apparent effort, Gloria manifested a radiant throne composed entirely of golden light.

The dazzling construct appeared instantly at her side, elegant and imposing, as though it belonged to some celestial palace.

She seated herself gracefully upon it, resting her chin on one hand in a manner that suggested both authority and amusement.

Then, as though it were the most natural thing in the world, she conjured another piece of furniture—a chair fashioned from the same golden light—and placed it in front of Rem.

"Why don't you sit for a while as we wait for them?" Gloria suggested casually, her golden eyes narrowing slightly in amusement as she gestured toward the glowing chair.

For a brief moment, Rem was left speechless.

They were, after all, standing in a public park, and the area was already lined with plenty of ordinary wooden benches scattered all around.

The absurdity of someone ignoring all those normal seats only to summon a divine-looking chair of light struck her as strange, even ridiculous.

Still, Rem was careful not to allow her thoughts to show outwardly.

The last thing she wanted was to appear rude or dismissive in front of someone like Gloria, who radiated immense power.

Suppressing her hesitation, she accepted the offer and sat down on the glowing chair, though her body language betrayed her unease.

Her posture was stiff, her hands resting tensely in her lap as she tried to remain polite despite feeling unnatural sitting on a chair made entirely of light.

Gloria, for her part, was not oblivious to Rem's discomfort.

She noticed it clearly, her sharp gaze picking up every little flicker of unease on Rem's face and in her body movements.

However, her attention soon shifted elsewhere.

Gloria was perfectly aware of something that Rem herself had not yet noticed.

They were being followed.

Several people had been trailing them from a distance, keeping track of their movements, and among those followers was a familiar and formidable figure—Wilhelm, the Sword Devil himself.

'I see… so that is how it is. They wanted to keep an eye on Subaru and observe what he intended to do,' Gloria thought to herself with an amused smirk.

The situation made perfect sense to her.

Subaru and Rem were aligned with a different Royal Camp, and considering how unstable Subaru had been recently, not to mention the commotion he had caused with his reckless behavior, it was only natural for others to take interest.

His erratic actions made him stand out as someone potentially dangerous, or at the very least unpredictable, and that was reason enough for others to watch him carefully.

On top of that, Subaru had dragged Rem out of the mansion in a sudden and impulsive manner, ignoring the broader situation and the possible consequences of his actions.

Someone as pragmatic and cautious as Crusch would never allow that to go unchecked. It was entirely in her nature to send people to tail them—whether the purpose was to ensure Subaru and Rem were not plotting anything suspicious, or simply to guarantee Subaru's safety while he remained under her roof as a guest, did not matter.

Either way, surveillance was the obvious response.

Gloria understood all of this instantly and found it rather entertaining.

While Rem sat nervously on her chair of light, worrying about Subaru's odd behavior and the strange situation she had been thrust into, Gloria leaned back on her throne with a knowing smile, quietly watching events play out with an almost playful amusement.

Gloria, without the slightest sign of hesitation, casually raised her hand and summoned a series of radiant weapons in the air.

Each one was forged entirely from pure light, their edges gleaming with a brilliance that forced Rem to narrow her eyes.

Swords, spears, and other blades hovered in midair, shimmering as though alive, spinning into position as if awaiting a command.

Rem, still seated on the glowing chair, could only stare in shock as the weapons suddenly shifted, pointing in different directions before shooting forward with incredible speed.

The sound of air being split was followed by cries of pain.

"Arghhh!" two voices wailed in unison.

From the shadows, a pair of figures stumbled into view, clutching their feet where the radiant blades had struck and pinned them to the ground.

Their blood seeped out onto the dirt path, staining the quiet park.

A third figure stepped out more calmly, though not unscathed.

Wilhelm, the Sword Devil himself, emerged from concealment, his composed expression betraying nothing despite the fact that his sleeve had been torn.

A shallow cut ran across his forearm, and through the rip in his clothes, fresh blood could be seen trickling downward.

Even for someone of his caliber, Gloria's casual strike had not been something he could completely evade without consequence.

Rem's heart froze at the sight.

She instantly realized what had happened—Gloria had deliberately targeted those who had been trailing them which she hadn't noticed.

The attack had not been random or careless; it was precise, aimed to expose their followers and wound them just enough to remove any element of secrecy.

In that moment, Rem pieced it together.

The people bleeding before her had indeed been stalking them all along, and Gloria had decided to deal with the matter directly.

Wilhelm broke the tense silence, his calm voice carrying across the park. "May I know who you are, and why you chose to attack us without warning?" His words were polite, but his gaze was sharp as he glanced at the soldiers now groaning on the ground.

The man carried himself with an unshakable sense of dignity, even while blood seeped from his own wound.

The setting made the confrontation even more dangerous.

Though the park itself had been relatively empty, located in a quieter part of the main city, the sudden cries of pain had already drawn the attention of nearby passersby.

People were beginning to gather at the edges of the area, whispering among themselves as they tried to understand what was happening.

Gloria, however, appeared completely unbothered.

Resting comfortably on her radiant throne, she crossed one leg over the other, her golden eyes glinting sharply as she fixed Wilhelm with a cold stare.

"You were following Miss Rem and Natsuki Subaru," she said, her tone cutting and accusatory.

"They are under the protection of my father. What you did was not simply discourteous—it was a crime punishable by death."

Her words were delivered with complete certainty, as if her judgment carried the weight of law.

Wilhelm did not back down.

His sharp gaze met Gloria's, and his response came steady and resolute.

"They are guests residing under the roof of my Lady, Crusch Karsten. Their safety is, therefore, my direct responsibility. That man, Natsuki Subaru, is in an unstable state of mind. To ensure he does not harm himself or others, my Lady gave us the order to follow them discreetly, both to monitor his actions and to protect them should danger arise."

Gloria's expression did not falter.

Her voice remained calm, yet it carried the weight of absolute finality.

"Very well. If that was the nature of your task, then your duty is no longer required. From this moment onward, you will return to your Lady, as Natsuki Subaru and Miss Rem are now under our protection. That is no longer something for you to concern yourself with."

Her tone was decisive, her words spoken as though her will could not possibly be disputed.

Wilhelm hesitated for the first time.

His eyes narrowed slightly as he studied the woman before him. His sharpened senses had caught every word that had passed between Gloria and Rem earlier, and he could not ignore what he had heard.

According to what was implied, this woman claimed to be a Great Spirit and, even more boldly, connected herself to the mysterious entity known as the Great Sage.

Yet many details did not align. Her presence, her behavior, and her vague declarations all left questions unanswered.

Wilhelm, a man who had lived through countless battles and seen both truth and deception in equal measure, found it difficult to simply take her claims at face value.

The idea that she was tied to the Great Sage was not something he could accept so easily, no matter how confidently she declared it.

Even with his unshakable composure, Wilhelm found himself caught between doubt and caution. Gloria's display of power was real—too real to dismiss.

But the truth behind her words remained uncertain, and until he understood more, he could not fully trust what he was being told.

Why would the Great Sage, a legendary existence so distant that even someone like Reinhardt could not gain an audience with him, suddenly choose to approach a man like Natsuki Subaru? Subaru was not regarded as special by the world.

On the contrary, he was seen as a failure, a weakling, and even a nuisance by many people, especially Royal Knights.

The contrast between the Great Sage's stature and Subaru's reputation was so vast that the idea itself bordered on absurdity.

And yet there was another matter that gnawed at Wilhelm's mind.

The so-called Great Sage appeared with a face identical to Subaru's.

Why would such an ancient and mysterious figure resemble him so perfectly?

The most reasonable explanation Wilhelm could conceive was that the Sage was using a disguise.

For someone of that caliber, altering one's appearance should have been a trivial matter. Still, suspicion lingered.

But the real question was whether the woman's claims were true at all.

Was she truly connected to the Great Sage, or was she weaving a deception for reasons unknown?

If she was telling the truth, then why had the Great Sage reached out specifically to Subaru and Rem?

What bond could possibly exist between them?

The implications extended further. If Subaru had some connection to such a being, how might this affect the ongoing Royal Selection?

Could it alter the balance of power among the camps?

Wilhelm's thoughts raced. He was a man of discipline and experience, but even he found himself conflicted in this situation.

Should he withdraw quietly and report what he had learned to Lady Crusch?

Or should he continue pressing for answers, even at the risk of escalating hostilities with this woman?

He did not know what path would yield the better outcome, and that uncertainty weighed heavily on him.

His deliberations were cut short by an abrupt sound.

The distinct rhythm of armored boots striking the stone ground echoed from nearby streets.

The noise grew louder and heavier with each passing second.

Wilhelm's instincts sharpened instantly, and he realized what was happening.

Reinforcements were arriving. But his realization came too late to prevent what followed.

From the far end of the park, several squads of knights appeared, their armor gleaming silver under the sunlight.

The disciplined formation spread out as they advanced, weapons already drawn and pointed in their direction.

Their presence radiated authority, and the sharp glare of their polished armor made it clear these were no ordinary soldiers but members of the Royal Knights.

"You are under arrest for attacking members of the Royal Knights!" one of the armored men declared loudly, his voice carrying across the park with authority.

"Surrender yourselves immediately or face our retaliation!" His sharp gaze fixed particularly on Gloria, his tone leaving no room for negotiation.

Wilhelm cursed under his breath. He should have anticipated this outcome and given his injured companions strict instructions to remain quiet.

Their cries had no doubt drawn unwanted attention, and now the Royal Knights had been summoned.

Stepping forward, Wilhelm raised his voice, trying to take control of the situation before it spiraled further out of hand.

"All of you, lower your weapons. Please, there has been a misunderstanding here. It is better for all involved if this does not escalate into unnecessary violence."

His words carried authority, bolstered by his reputation, and the knights hesitated.

Recognizing the speaker as Wilhelm, the Sword Devil himself, the tension in their stances eased slightly.

The hostility directed toward Gloria diminished, though their eyes still watched her carefully.

Her earlier actions had not been forgotten, but Wilhelm's intervention gave them pause.

Gloria, however, did not seem the least bit concerned by the sudden arrival of armed reinforcements.

If anything, the situation appeared to amuse her.

Sitting on her radiant throne, she regarded the knights with a faint smirk, but as the silence stretched, her expression shifted into something sharper.

A sneer formed on her lips, mocking the knights even as they surrounded her.

The leading knight, still cautious but somewhat reassured by Wilhelm's presence, finally spoke up again. "Sir Wilhelm, I must ask for an explanation. Why are Karsten soldiers lying injured here? And who is this woman, who so blatantly employed magic within the boundaries of the capital?"

His eyes turned back toward Gloria, his voice stern but measured. "I may not know the full story, but regardless of circumstance, she must provide a statement—and she owes both an explanation and an apology for what has occurred."

The air grew tense again. Wilhelm could feel the fragile balance hanging in the air, and he knew that one wrong word might tip the entire situation into chaos.

Gloria suddenly broke out into a fit of laughter, the sound sharp and mocking.

The knights, Wilhelm, and even Rem all turned their focus toward her, confusion and unease spreading as her laughter grew louder, as if she had just heard a joke far too ridiculous to ignore.

After several moments, her laughter abruptly stopped.

She rose from the radiant throne she had been sitting on, the seat dissolving into countless shimmering particles of golden light until not a single trace remained.

Gloria hovered slightly above the ground, her movements deliberate and filled with an air of overwhelming superiority.

Then, without warning, she raised her foot and stomped down with immense force.

Boom!

The sound thundered across the park as a violent shockwave burst outward from the impact.

The ground fractured instantly, spiderweb cracks racing in every direction as if the earth itself was shattering under her will.

A wide crater formed at the epicenter of her strike, and the sheer force of the shockwave sent several armored knights stumbling backward, their balance completely thrown off.

Many of them nearly dropped their weapons as they struggled to stay upright.

Only one person remained entirely untouched—Rem.

She sat still upon the golden chair Gloria had conjured earlier, the seat untouched by the quake, as though the laws of nature had been denied in its presence.

Her wide eyes reflected both shock and the dawning realization of just how little power they truly held compared to the being standing before them.

"Who do you think you are, mongrels?" Gloria's voice cut through the air like a blade. She sneered, her golden eyes flashing with disdain, and then lifted a single finger toward the sky.

In that instant, the entire atmosphere changed.

A sudden brilliance engulfed the capital of Lugunica.

From above, high in the heavens thousands of meters away, light condensed into a single blinding point.

That point expanded rapidly until it became an enormous orb, a miniature sun burning with overwhelming radiance.

The heat surged downward, oppressive and suffocating. The air itself wavered as waves of scorching energy pressed against every living being present.

Sweat poured from the knights almost instantly, their armor turning into ovens that cooked them from the inside.

Civilians who were in the city gasped and panicked, running away in terror trying to escape the heat, the sensation of heat making their skin prickle painfully.

Ground dragons tied along the streets nearby reared up in panic, growling wildly as the oppressive aura pressed down on them.

Gloria's body slowly rose higher, her form floating effortlessly into the air until she stood several meters above the ground.

Golden light radiated from her entire body, illuminating her like a figure of divine wrath. Her eyes, burning with fury, swept over the knights below her.

"Do you truly believe you can order me around?" she declared, her voice amplified unnaturally, echoing across the park and carrying into the surrounding streets so that all could hear.

"I am the Great Spirit of Yang, a contracted spirit of the Lord Great Sage himself! I could reduce your so-called nation to ash with but a single strike, long before your vaunted Divine Dragon could even take to the skies."

The miniature sun above blazed even brighter at her words, pressing its heat against the city like a threat given physical form.

The knights collapsed under the strain, their legs trembling as they tried and failed to stand firm.

Some dropped their weapons outright, unable to endure the suffocating pressure.

Meanwhile, Rem remained untouched inside a shimmering golden barrier that surrounded her chair.

Though the barrier prevented her from escaping, it also shielded her completely from the overwhelming heat, meaning Gloria had personally chosen to protect her despite the chaos unfolding around them.

Wilhelm's eyes widened as he watched the scale of the spell unfolding overhead.

His instincts as a warrior told him everything he needed to know—this was no bluff.

The power being displayed was not an illusion, nor an exaggeration.

It was real, and it was catastrophic in scope.

'She's as strong… no, perhaps even stronger than the Four Great Spirits themselves,' Wilhelm thought, his mind racing as the full weight of the situation crashed down on him.

His years of battle experience allowed him to judge power instinctively, and what he saw now far exceeded even the most terrifying encounters of his long career.

Understanding that resistance would only bring annihilation, Wilhelm acted swiftly.

He dropped down onto one knee, placing his clenched fist against his chest and lowering his head in deep submission.

"Lady Gloria," he said with a strong, steady voice that carried both urgency and sincerity. "Please, I beg you—quell your anger! I offer my deepest apologies on behalf of these knights, on behalf of myself, and for my failure to recognize your true nature sooner. I implore you to forgive this grave offense."

His words echoed in the heavy silence.

Gloria shifted her gaze toward him, her expression unreadable for a long moment.

Then her eyes flicked toward the rest of the knights, who were drenched in sweat, trembling, and on the verge of collapse under the heat.

Realizing their peril and following Wilhelm's lead, they quickly dropped to one knee as well, lowering their heads in hurried submission before the radiant being who could erase them all with a single thought.

Gloria smirked with visible satisfaction, her eyes gleaming with arrogance as she lowered her raised hand.

The miniature sun that had loomed above the capital, radiating enough heat to bring the city to its knees, began to dissipate.

The blinding brilliance dimmed, the oppressive heat lifted, and the orb of destruction vanished as though it had never existed.

Yet the damage was already done.

The entirety of the capital had witnessed the unnatural light in the sky, and alarm had spread like wildfire.

Panic had already begun to take root in every corner of Lugunica.

Gloria gracefully descended from the air, her golden aura dimming to a more subdued glow as she touched the fractured ground.

Her boots crunched against the cracked stone left behind by her earlier stomp.

She turned her gaze toward Rem, who still sat stiffly on the golden chair, trapped within the barrier of light.

Without hesitation, Gloria extended her hand, and with a mere flick of her wrist, the barrier dissolved into particles that scattered into the air like dust, releasing Rem from its confines.

"My father is nearly finished speaking with Natsuki Subaru," Gloria said casually, her voice carrying an air of finality, as though everything that had just transpired was nothing more than a fleeting inconvenience.

"He is calling me now. We are leaving."

Before Rem could even process what was happening, Gloria stepped to her side with blinding speed and firmly took hold of her arm.

Light immediately surged around them, enveloping both their bodies in a cocoon of radiant brilliance.

A deafening rush of wind followed as the two figures blurred, rising into the sky like a golden comet. In the blink of an eye, they vanished from sight, leaving nothing behind but a faint shimmer in the air where they had once stood.

Wilhelm remained motionless for several seconds, his body trembling uncontrollably.

Slowly, he forced himself to stand, his knees weak and his breathing heavy.

He glanced down at his own clothes, noticing the burns and singed fabric left behind by the oppressive heat.

His old, scarred hands clenched tightly, and he exhaled a long, shaky breath.

"If that attack had been unleashed… if even a fraction of that thing had struck the ground," Wilhelm muttered to himself, his voice low, filled with dread.

"Thousands would have died instantly. No… not just thousands. Hundreds of thousands… perhaps even millions would have perished in a matter of moments. The capital would have been reduced to ruins, and the kingdom itself might have ceased to exist."

His words carried a weight of absolute certainty.

The fear in his eyes betrayed the understanding that what had been displayed was not an exaggeration or empty intimidation—it was real power, the kind of destructive force that could shake the very foundations of nations.

His body continued to tremble as he forced himself to think rationally, his mind processing what he had just witnessed.

"But at the same time," Wilhelm continued, his tone quieter but no less grim, "it also gives credibility to her words. A spirit of such overwhelming strength… there is no mistaking it. She is a contracted spirit belonging to the Great Sage. Only one of the Three Heroes would be capable of binding a Great Spirit of this magnitude. No ordinary person, no mere noble or sorcerer, could command such a being."

The weight of that realization pressed on him heavily.

He knew that the implications of what he had seen would shake not only the capital, but the entire kingdom, perhaps even the world itself.

Meanwhile, the city had already descended into complete disorder.

Panic spread rapidly through the streets as rumors ran wild.

Citizens screamed of a sun appearing in the sky, of heat so intense that the end of the world itself seemed near.

Merchants abandoned their stalls, mothers clutched their children tightly, and guards scrambled in every direction to contain the chaos.

Alarm bells rang out from towers, signaling that the capital was under threat, though none truly understood what had just happened or who had caused it.

And in the deepest part of the royal castle, where news from across the kingdom was constantly gathered and documented, a single message had already been written down and carried into the halls of power.

Those who read it went pale, their faces filled with disbelief and fear.

The words were simple, yet they carried a weight heavier than steel:

"The Great Sage has returned to the world."
