072: Coaching Ser Lena Pokémon Battle (2)
"Boom!"
"Pii~yi!" The Poké Ball opened with a flash of light, and a soft pink, slightly chubby Pokémon with a rounded body and signature curled hair appeared on the training field.
Unlike Pikachu, who is universally popular and gender-neutral in design, Clefairy a pure Fairy-type introduced in the Pokémon world is known for its cuteness and charm, especially beloved by young trainers like Ser Lena. Its popularity even rivals Pikachu's in the early merchandise era, with Clefairy dolls being bestsellers in toy stores throughout regions like Kanto and Johto.
As it materialized from the Poké Ball, Clefairy looked around with wide, curious eyes. Its head tilted slightly to the side in that signature Clefairy fashion as it searched the area.
"Pii!"
Once it spotted Ser Lena, Clefairy's eyes lit up. It ran over, hugging her leg tightly and rubbing its cheek against her shin with visible affection. Clefairy clearly adored its trainer.
"Clefairy, we're going to have a battle soon. Will you fight with me?" Ser Lena asked gently, lifting Clefairy up with both hands.
This time, unlike before, Ser Lena didn't need Ash's encouragement. She took the initiative her voice still soft, but filled with a newfound determination.
Ash, watching from the side, felt genuinely pleased. From the hesitant girl two days ago to the one who now actively bonded with her Pokémon, Ser Lena had already begun to change. And that growth, however small, was priceless to him.
"Pii" Clefairy gave an eager nod, clearly understanding Ser Lena's words. Its eyes gleamed as it acknowledged the upcoming battle, and the joy in Ser Lena's heart was written all over her glowing expression.
"Thank you, Clefairy!" she giggled, hugging it tightly. "Thank you so much!"
After a few moments of bonding, Ser Lena suddenly realized that Ash had been quietly observing the whole time. Her cheeks flushed a deep pink as her usual shyness returned.
"A-Ash…" She stammered, eyes flickering nervously. "What… what should I do next?"
Ash, sensing her unease, didn't respond immediately. Instead, he silently triggered the system in his mind a tool he'd relied on for guidance throughout his own journey. The system scanned Clefairy and displayed the following information:
---
[Pokémon: Clefairy]
Level: 5
Type: Fairy
Nature: Bold
Ability: Cute Charm
Potential: C (Standard)
Known Moves:
Pound (Proficiency: Basic)
Sing (Proficiency: 27/500)
Copycat (Proficiency: Low)
Splash (Proficiency: 23/100)
---
Ash raised an eyebrow slightly. A level 5 Clefairy with four learned moves, including Copycat? Not bad at all for a beginner trainer. Most campers' Pokémon only knew two or three basic moves at this point.
Though Splash was famously ineffective known for doing absolutely nothing in combat it wasn't a drawback. Its presence was more a curiosity than a liability.
And of course, Sing was a move with great tactical potential, albeit hard to land. If used correctly, it could turn the tide of a battle with a single hit.
"Lena," Ash said warmly, closing the system panel, "why don't you ask Clefairy to demonstrate the moves it knows first? Once we see them, I can show you how to use them more effectively in battle."
Ser Lena nodded quickly, her initial hesitation easing thanks to Ash's gentle tone. "Clefairy, can you show us your moves?"
"Pii~yi!" Clefairy chirped. It leapt from her arms to the ground and, with surprising energy, began to show off its current move set.
Pound — Clefairy thrust its small arms forward, demonstrating a basic but clean physical attack.
Sing — It began humming a soft, melodic tune, and a faint glowing sound wave shimmered in the air before dissipating.
Splash — With a light bounce, Clefairy performed the traditional "flop" of the Splash move, which looked silly but was performed with enthusiasm.
Copycat — It mimicked the last move (Splash) again, its body bouncing lightly once more.
While Clefairy was demonstrating, Ash began his explanation.
"You see, Lena," he said calmly, "each Pokémon move has its own use, even if it looks useless at first. Pound is your basic attack. It's fast and reliable. Sing is harder to hit with, but if it lands, it'll put the opponent to sleep."
Ser Lena listened intently, nodding. Her expression was serious—nothing like her usual shy self.
"Copycat is an interesting one," Ash continued. "It repeats the last move used in battle, whether by you or your opponent. That can be really powerful if timed well."
"And… Splash?" she asked softly, not sure what to make of it.
Ash chuckled. "It doesn't do anything now. But don't worry, most beginner Pokémon have at least one skill like that. As Clefairy grows stronger, it'll learn better moves. For now, we'll focus on using Pound and Sing effectively."
It was the first time Ser Lena had someone explain things so clearly. And in that moment, as the sun shone through the trees and Clefairy smiled up at her, she felt something stir a quiet but powerful confidence.
This was her partner. And with Ash's guidance, she would grow stronger—step by step.
Ser Lena was a very typical example of a child still finding her way in the world. Her mother was a well-known Rhyhorn racer, a profession that carried great prestige in Kalos. Ever since she was little, Ser Lena had been under her mother's quiet but persistent expectation: to follow in her footsteps and become a professional Rhyhorn rider.
However, Lena herself was still very young, too young to have formed a clear vision of her dreams or decided on the career path she wanted to pursue. She hadn't yet developed a deep interest in Pokémon battles or studied the strategies and commands necessary to excel as a Trainer.
In the original Pokémon Adventures manga, even after receiving her starter Pokémon (commonly referred to as Earl Dervish Pokémon in some adaptations), she wandered aimlessly until Shauna her outgoing and passionate friend encouraged her to explore the world of Pokémon performers. That eventually led her to become a Pokémon Performer, participating in Showcases and cultivating her talent.
But now, in this altered timeline where Ash had met Ser Lena earlier, he was determined to intervene and gently guide her toward discovering her true interests. By nurturing her early on, Ash hoped to give her a head start, so she wouldn't have to stumble through confusion like in the original story. With proper coaching, she might even achieve top marks in the summer camp, and perhaps be granted her Earl Dervish Pokémon ahead of schedule.
Right now, Ash's top priority was to help Ser Lena learn how to command her Pokémon in battle. His eyes shone with earnest intent if he could, he wanted to help her become one of the Excellent students in the camp rankings.
"Ser Lena," Ash said with a smile, "Pokémon battles aren't as complicated as they seem. No matter what happens during the fight, the final goal is to defeat the opponent and secure victory."
"But since you haven't had any formal battle training yet, I'll teach you a useful formula: 'When the enemy advances, we retreat; when the enemy holds, we harass; when the enemy tires, we attack; when the enemy flees, we pursue.'"
"This classic formula can help you grasp the flow of battle…"
Although Ser Lena was shy and quiet, she had a special trait when she decided to commit to something, she gave it her full attention. Maybe it was because she didn't want to drag her friends down, or perhaps because she didn't want anyone to sacrifice valuable points on her behalf whatever the reason, she was fully focused as Ash began his tactical lesson.
"Let's take that formula and apply it to Clefairy's current skill set to create a few simple, effective strategies."
"For instance:
When your opponent aggressively attacks, have Clefairy use 'Splash' to dodge repeatedly. While Splash has no direct combat effect, it can serve as a way to stall and reposition during a low-level skirmish.
Once the opponent shows signs of fatigue, have Clefairy use 'Sing' to lull them to sleep.
If 'Sing' is successful and the opponent falls asleep, you can then command Clefairy to charge forward with 'Pound' for damage.
But if the opponent's attack is too fast or overwhelming right at the start, and Clefairy struggles to dodge, then don't force it to evade. Instead, counter with 'Copycat'—it will mimic the opponent's last move, turning their strength against them."
Ash was a soul that had lived twice, reincarnated into a six-year-old body, yet equipped with the knowledge and battle instincts of a seasoned Trainer. For someone like him, explaining the logic of Pokémon battles and crafting beginner strategies was a simple task.
He didn't just lecture Ser Lena about abstract theories—he applied everything directly to her Clefairy's known moves and the practical rhythm of battle. Ash's tone was patient and easy to follow, carefully guiding her through every scenario.
And Ser Lena listened intently. Though she'd never battled before, she was quick-witted and eager to learn. With Ash's coaching, she absorbed the fundamentals and began to imagine herself as someone who could stand on the battlefield—someone who could truly grow alongside her Pokémon.
