The Konoha team consisted of only three: a fifty-year-old man carrying a large pot; Might Dai, in a green jumpsuit, his thick brows and bright eyes framed by a wide, toothy grin, giving a thumbs-up; and a medical ninja wearing a Genin forehead protector.
"I wasn't overestimating you; you're just exceptionally understated," Kai said with a warm smile.
He recognized the pot-carrying man as Kosuke Maruboshi, a Genin who had received personal instruction in Water Release from the Second Hokage, been personally promoted to Konoha's Eternal Genin by the Third Hokage, mastered the Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu and the Konoha-Ryū Kenpō.
The other was Might Dai, renowned for his incredible taijutsu and legendary battle against the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist.
These two were the forerunners of Konoha's legendary strongest Genin.
"It's an honor to be recognized by Uchiha Kai-sama!" Might Dai exclaimed, his big white teeth flashing.
"If I told my son that his old man was remembered and praised by you, he'd be overjoyed!"
Seeing Might Dai's enthusiastic reaction, his eyes blazing with excitement, Kai chuckled and rubbed his nose.
"Your son, Might Guy, will become the strongest taijutsu user in the shinobi world!"
"What?!" Might Dai was practically speechless with excitement, tears welling in his eyes as he rushed forward, grabbing Kai's hand.
He covered the twenty or thirty meters between them in a few bounds, his speed astonishing.
"With such praise from Kai-sama, he'll surely strive to become even stronger. Thank you for your kind words. I'll be sure to tell Guy!"
Might Dai exclaimed, completely forgetting Kai's renegade status.
Might Dai's sudden burst of speed startled Hatosuke, who had been simmering with resentment. He turned to Kosuke Maruboshi.
"I challenge you!" Hatosuke's sudden declaration stunned everyone.
Konan cried out, "Hatosuke, that's disrespectful! They're acquainted with Kai…"
"Uchiha Kai again!" Hatosuke spun around, his gaze fixed on Konan with resentment.
"Is he the only one you see?"
"Hatosuke, we can discuss this later!" A middle-aged Akatsuki member beside Hatosuke frowned, urging him to reconsider.
With the infamous Uchiha Kai present, they didn't want to provoke a fight. Angering Kai would be fatal.
"Let go!" Hatosuke flung the ninja's hand away, his face contorted with anger. He glared at Kosuke Maruboshi.
"I may not be a match for the so-called Blood-Red Asura, but I've fought on countless battlefields. I'm a Special Jonin in Amegakure. Defeating a mere Konoha Genin will be child's play!"
"Whether you accept or not, I'll show you what I'm capable of!"
Before Konan could react, Hatosuke launched himself at Kosuke Maruboshi, a kunai whistling through the air as he moved. His hands flew, forming hand seals.
Everyone was taken aback by his sudden attack. Konan moved to intervene, but Kai stopped her.
"Let him be. Some people need to learn the hard way."
"And don't underestimate Konoha Genin, especially old Kosuke Maruboshi."
"You're giving this old man far too much credit, kid," Kosuke Maruboshi said with a wry smile, his body twisting as his pot deflected the kunai, sending sparks flying.
Hatosuke's face darkened. He rapidly formed hand seals, a ferocious roar escaping his lips.
"Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique!"
A searing fireball erupted from his mouth. Simultaneously, he threw another kunai, this one laced with explosive tags, towards Kosuke Maruboshi.
Konan's face paled. "Hatosuke, are you crazy? This is just a sparring match!"
"Don't be so dramatic. You're underestimating Kosuke Maruboshi," Kai said, smiling as he patted Konan's shoulder, making no move to stop Hatosuke.
This stunned everyone present, a strange anticipation filling their eyes. Could this lifelong Genin truly live up to Uchiha Kai's high praise? Or was he vastly overestimated?
"Kid, it seems I'll have to show you what I'm capable of," Kosuke Maruboshi said, shaking his head.
In an instant, his hands moved, a blur of motion. He made no attempt to dodge the approaching fireball.
His hands flew, forming hand seals with incredible speed. Before anyone could react, twenty or thirty hand seals were completed.
"Those… those are Water Release seals. Using Water Release here… he can't possibly withstand a fireball enhanced with explosive tags!"
Konan's face paled, her knuckles white. But seeing Kai's calm smile, she suppressed the urge to intervene.
"Water Release: Water Wall Technique!" Kosuke Maruboshi clapped his hands together. Water surged from the ground, forming a massive wall of water.
With a deafening explosion, the fireball and explosive tags slammed into the water wall.
BOOM!
A thunderous explosion reverberated, but the water wall absorbed the blast.
Hatosuke was stunned.
"It's over," Kai said, a smile playing on his lips.
Konan and the others were taken aback, including Hatosuke. They assumed Kosuke Maruboshi would be forced to defend passively until the blast subsided.
But before they could react, a black shadow emerged from the water wall. The large iron pot shot through the water, hurtling towards Hatosuke like a whirlwind.
Hatosuke's face paled. He threw a few shuriken, but they bounced harmlessly off the steel pot.
Before he could react, Kosuke Maruboshi appeared beside him, a chakra-infused blade at his throat.
