Chapter 4 – A Map to the Future or a Return to the Past
Adrian stood frozen in the dim room, the aged diary clutched tightly in his hands like a fragile relic from another life. The leather cover, cracked and worn by time, pulsed with a strange warmth—almost like a heartbeat. It felt alive, waiting… maybe waiting for him.
He took a deep breath, hesitating, then opened the diary with reverence. His heart thudded against his ribs, unsure if he was ready to face the secrets hidden within. The first page was blank.
Confusion furrowed his brow. Why would his mother, Eliana, leave the first page empty? There had to be something. Anything.
Then, slowly, golden lines began to shimmer on the page—at first faint, almost like distant stars, then growing brighter and swirling into intricate patterns. The lines moved, twisting and weaving, forming a map. But this was no ordinary map—it pulsed with an otherworldly energy, alive and breathing.
Adrian's mouth went dry as he reached toward the glowing lines, but before he could touch them, new words appeared, inscribed in radiant gold:
"This is your first step. If you cannot claim this inheritance, the rest will make no sense. The secret of this world lies in the truths beyond the walls of this city."
Each word struck him like a hammer, heavy with ancient power and profound meaning. This was more than a message—it was a challenge. A warning. A prophecy.
His hands trembled as he turned the page, mind racing with questions.
This is just the beginning. What comes next?
Beneath the message, softer words began to form—personal, aching, filled with sorrow:
"If one day you are about to die, if you fail to reach this inheritance, the diary will take you to the safest place within your mind. Your memories will vanish, and you will treat it all as if it were just a dream. This is our final protection for our most precious treasure: you, son. We would rather see you live an ordinary life, as long as you are safe. That is enough for us."
Adrian's breath caught. Tears blurred his vision, making the golden glow even more vivid. He felt the warmth of his mother's embrace, the strength of his father's hands—love reaching out across time and space to protect him.
Mom… Dad… even now, you're still guarding me…
A flood of emotions crashed over him—grief, longing, love—but beneath it all, a fierce spark ignited. Determination.
He stood, gripping the diary tighter. The glowing map hovered above the page, beckoning him forward.
With a whispered vow, more to himself than anyone else, Adrian spoke:
I will find this inheritance. I need to know what's out there. I want to protect everyone at the orphanage, to give them the life they deserve. I won't fail again.
For the first time since everything changed, purpose settled deep within him. The road ahead was dark, filled with danger and uncertainty—but it was his path to walk. Not just for himself, but for everyone who believed in him, for the family he finally found.
With the diary as his guide and the map lighting his way, Adrian was ready.
The world beyond the orphanage was waiting.
And he would no longer be held back.
