Chapter 17 - Ch 17

I think I owe you an apology… sorry I acted like that. I don't blame you for freezing — what else could you even do? And, honestly, the whole thing with Ryan and Emma calmed me down a bit, so… yeah, sorry. You've been through a lot — meeting Mark, Ahmed, Levi (who I barely remember), and now Emma and Ryan. I wanted to tell my story first, but you kinda didn't listen but make no mistake you will. So, let's just chill a bit and enjoy our stay before we keep climbing up. Let's go back to the group.

Tommy: Anyone know where the TV remote is?

Emma: It's literally right in front of you. How did you not see it?

Tommy: Where?

Lina: Dude, how can you not see it? You're the closest to the TV.

Tommy: Oh—found it.

Dalia: What's going on?

Emma: Tommy wants the remote to watch something, I think.

Dalia: Isn't that the rooftop?

Ryan: Yeah, it is! Come on, Tommy—turn the volume up!

Tommy: Hold on, the batteries need adjusting… okay, here we go.

After many long years, someone has reached the final floor of the tower—a place with a dark and troubling history. The last time this occurred, one of the Nine Kings ascended and was chosen by the Leader to become the Fourth King. Historical records indicate the tower was once a set of trials on the ground, but over time it was altered into the vast structure we now see appearing across the world. For many, it has become less a path to glory and more a lure toward a fatal choice.

Right now, live images show a lone boy, identified as Luke, standing on the rooftop. The mood here is tense and heavy. Our field team has approached as closely as the law will allow; they cannot step onto the roof itself.

Lina : Oh my God…

Tommy: What do you think Luke is going to do?

Emma: I hope… not that.

Ryan: Quiet… they're about to speak to him.

The crew has successfully provided Luke with a microphone and an earpiece, allowing us to hear each other.

Luke… Luke, can you hear me?

Luke : Loud and clear.

Luke, do you know who I am?

Luke:

Justine Park… a blonde against the world.

Justine:

Does that mean you're a fan, Luke?

Luke:

…A little.

Justine:

Luke, you're on live television right now. Do you have a message you'd like to share with the world?

Luke:

…A message?

Justine:

Or maybe there's something the world can do for you?

Luke:

A message… or something the world can do?

Justine:

Say whatever you want, Luke. The world is watching.

Luke:

Goodbye… you ugly world.

Justine :

Wait—Luke, you're live on air. Say whatever is on your mind.

Luke:

…Can the world give me a reason to live for?

Justine:

I'm not sure I understand. Could you repeat that?

Luke:

Make the world call… to give me a reason to live.

Justine :

If you're just joining us, we're speaking with Luke, live from the top of the tower…...if you wich to save Luke call the number on your screen right now.....

03:30 ......... 10:00

Justine Park: Welcome back. It's been three days since we first contacted Luke. I know you've heard me say it many times on this show: "If you feel down, head to the Tower—your problem will be solved." And you've also heard me say: "Don't depend on the Tower to solve your problem. Only seek it when it's your last resort."

Tommy: Top-tier advertisement.

Lina: I know, right?

Emma: We've heard it from her too.

Ryan: Guys… what? Three days just swung by.

Ron: I guess in the Tower you can't sense time passing.

Chris: Did you forget where we are?

Ryan: No… but… you know what? Forget it. Let's just watch TV.

Justine Park (on TV): Either way, I want to thank the people who reached out to help Luke and give him a reason to live. As you know, many of you called, sent messages, or mailed letters. We made sure they all reached Luke. There were about a thousand letters or so, and Luke has been reading them for the past three days. I've been told he's finished reading them all.

Let's get him on camera. Just a couple of seconds—we'll give him a microphone and an earpiece so he can communicate with us any moment now.

Luke: Ahm… testing. Mrs. Park, do you hear me?

Justine Park: I hear you, Luke. Can you wait? We're having a problem with the video feed, so we can't see you right now.

Luke: It's fine. I just want to say a couple of words, if you don't mind, until you have the camera ready.

Justine Park: Go ahead. The world is listening.

Luke: Hello, world. I got your letters. Half of them said "jump." Some were just old sayings. And a bunch of people told me their life stories.

Justine Park: Luke, listen—

Luke: And the calls… they were sweet. But still, so many old sayings thrown at my face. Whenever I hear one, I tend to adjust it—make it perfect in my head. So to me, you're telling me something dumb, and I'm trying to make it smart.

Justine Park: What are you talking about?

Luke: You want an example? Fine. Here's one: "Chase your dreams." Simple enough, right? A saying that tells you to chase all of your dreams. You could just as easily say "Stay asleep." Everyone knows you can't chase all your dreams at once, and if you actually applied "chase your dreams" to everything, your life would be miserable.

… I'm sorry, everyone. But that wasn't enough. I guess… this might be my last goodbye.

Justine Park: Wait, I—

Luke: For what? It's over. And I've read the comments on the internet. They're not encouraging.

Justine Park: Just wait. I'll be back—just wait for me… Sorry, guys, we'll cut to a commercial.

Ryan: Damn.

Chris: I bet they're panicking right now.

Lina: Why are people so mean to him?

Ron: Not only that—his mind drifted from the main point just to prove another point.

Dalia: From all the comments you could've used, you picked that one?

Emma: Yeah, Reader… what the f—

Tommy: The people who came to kill themselves can be saved by another one who came to kill themselves too… and I thought I was weird. Good one, Reader.

Lina: No… maybe Reader's right.

Dalia: How so?

Lina: I think we can relate to Luke's pain. Maybe if we reach out to him, we can save him—or at least do something.

Ryan: We've got nothing to lose, right? Let's try.

Ron: Nice one, Reader.

Chris: Wait… who will talk to him?

Lina: All of us. Now get your phones and try to reach Justine Park..
