The name Chalkline Boys might not have meant much to Aron. To him, it was just another name on a list, another gang he'd found during his digging.
But to Max, it meant everything.
It was one of the exact guesses he'd already had running through his mind.
'The Chalkline Boys… They're the ones the Rejected Corps have been fighting. The organized group we heard about…'Max clenched his fist by his side, his jaw tight.
'So it really was them. Was it because of the war we started? Was it a personal grudge? Or maybe… it was because of the effect Wolf and I were having, maybe they saw me as an easier target. Maybe they were aiming for me and got Jay instead…'
A sickening swirl of guilt hit him. For a brief moment, Max wondered, what if he had been the one hit by the car instead?
He was smaller than Jay, and Jay had shoved him out of the way. But Max had the vow. His special ability improved his healing. He might have survived.
But Jay didn't.
And now he was gone.
