Chapter 308: Silver Sword Slashes the Monster
Under the combined efforts of the three, the number of Sirens steadily dwindled. Although neither Lynn nor Gied could fly, Lynn's repeated use of the Aard Sign sent waves of force that knocked entire clusters of Sirens out of the air.
While Gied's signs were less powerful, and he didn't use them as often, his mastery of the Bear School swordsmanship was incredible. Unlike the nimble and quick fighting style of the Cat School, the Bear School's style was all about heavy, crushing blows.
However, Gied's heavy attacks were far from slow, and his timing for both offense and defense was impeccable. Due to their heavy armor, Bear School witchers tended to block and parry monster attacks rather than dodge them.
Gied was consistently able to parry the Sirens' attacks at the perfect moment before countering. Not a single Siren was able to withstand his counterattack.
Tormented by the agonizing pain in its stomach, the Melusine watched the sudden turn of events. Though it lacked the intellect of a sentient being, it instinctively sensed danger and staggered backward.
It let out another piercing shriek. This sounded like a command. Following its cry, the remaining Sirens suddenly went berserk, ferociously pouncing on the two witchers. They didn't try to dodge the blades, seemingly intent on using their bodies as a shield to pin down the two witchers. At the same time, four more Sirens flew out of the cave, but they did not join the battle.
Instead, they each grabbed one of the Melusine's limbs and began to fly with it toward the cave entrance.
Gied saw this happen. "It's escaping!" he urgently shouted to Lynn.
The monster's intelligence might be low, but its grudges were not. If the Melusine escaped back to the cave to recuperate, there would be no peace for Svareg village ever again.
"Don't worry, I've got this!"
During the fight, Lynn had been keeping a close eye on the Melusine's situation. When he saw it call in a new group of subordinates to carry it away, he finished off an approaching Siren with a single strike. Then, he slammed his foot down and shot toward the Melusine like an arrow from a bow.
The other Sirens suddenly flew over, attempting to block Lynn's path. But the witcher reached into his witcher's satchel, pulled out a superior Dragon's Dream bomb, and tossed it forward. Then, he snapped his fingers, igniting the bomb's fuse. The Dragon's Dream bomb exploded in the midst of the Sirens, a flash of fire engulfing them all and scattering their charred bodies.
When Lynn's figure emerged from the black smoke of the explosion, the Melusine felt, for the first time, the same terror as the humans it had preyed upon. It let out several more furious roars at the charging witcher. The two Sirens holding its legs let go and viciously pounced on Lynn from two directions.
The witcher paid them no mind. He only raised his left arm when the two Sirens got closer, and a long, fiery red jet of flame shot from his palm. The Siren attacking from the left was completely unprepared and took the full brunt of the flame, immediately falling from the sky and wailing in agony, rolling on the ground completely engulfed in fire.
As he cast the Igni Sign, Lynn slammed his foot on the ground again, launching himself into the air. While the Wolf School was not as flexible as the Bear School, since mastering the Cat School swordsmanship, Lynn's body had become as light as a swallow's. So, as he leaped up, he not only dodged the Siren swooping down from the right but also landed squarely on its back as he fell. The man and monster fell to the ground in a cloud of dust. The Siren vomited blood from Lynn's stomp, its internal organs likely ruptured and destroyed. But even so, it was still baring its fangs.
Lynn did not indulge it. He reversed his grip on the sword and plunged it cleanly into the back of the Siren's skull, ending its life of eating humans.
At this point, the two remaining Sirens and the Melusine were not far from the cave. It was clear to anyone that while four Sirens were needed to carry the Melusine before, the remaining two were struggling to do so. Though they could still fly, they were barely managing. The Melusine's two hind legs were almost scraping the ground.
And yet, despite their struggle, they were so close to the cave. They would be back inside soon.
Olve shot a bolt from afar. But it missed. The Melusine, startled by the flying arrow, let out a triumphant shriek when it realized the bolt hadn't hit. Once it returned to the cave and recovered, it would have its revenge. For every one of its children these humans had killed, it would take a dozen human lives in return.
At that moment, a flash of silver light passed before its eyes, like a shooting star. Before the Melusine could react, it heard a scream from above, and the upward pull suddenly vanished. The remaining lift was no longer enough to support its heavy body. It fell rapidly, even pulling the Siren carrying it down with it.
The Melusine painfully rolled over on the ground. Only then did it realize that the flash of silver light it had seen earlier was a silver sword. And now, that sword was lodged in the chest of the Siren that had been carrying it.
Lynn used an Aard Sign to blast away the last remaining Siren trying to pounce on him. He then retrieved his silver sword from the corpse of the dead Siren. True to its master-crafted quality, the blade was as pristine as when he first drew it, despite the fierce battle.
The Melusine, in agony from its stomach pain and unable to use much of its strength, glared at the witcher before it. Its wings were completely useless. Its forelegs had no strength. But at least its hind legs could still muster a burst of power. It would only last a moment, but it wasn't for escaping—it was for a final, desperate attack. If that damned human dared to come close, it would suddenly lunge and bite. Humans and other animals were all the same; their necks were a fragile, vital spot. Even a slight bite could be fatal. At the very least, it would take this one human with it.
But what the Melusine saw was not a charging blade. Instead, it was a torrent of raging magical flame.
...
The battle had gone more smoothly than expected. The most dangerous threat, the Melusine, had been neutralized by the superior Black Blood potion. A witcher's fight wasn't just about face-to-face combat; it was about finding the right method. When you used the right method, you got twice the result with half the effort.
Afterward, Lynn took the most valuable materials from the corpses of the Sirens and piled all the bodies together to burn them. Monster meat was inedible; humans, elves, and dwarves would all get sick from it. Furthermore, the taste of monster meat was far inferior to that of animal meat and was difficult to swallow.
After finishing, he went back to find his two companions.
At the hiding spot, Gied was bandaging Olve's wounds. During the previous battle, even though Gied had placed Olve in the rear to shoot arrows from a safe distance, Olve had still been spotted by other Sirens after he killed a few of them. Three Sirens had pounced on him, and even though Gied had rushed to his aid in time, Olve's right arm and stomach had been scratched. Fortunately, the wounds were not very deep.
