CHAPTER 46
She took a deep breath and stared at nothing in particular. "I don't remember." She said at last. Her voice quiet but certain. "Not my home, not my comrades, not the battles I must have fought." She remained unmoving and blinked slowly. Her eyes were fixed looking down. "But I know what I am. I understood my duty, my purpose."
Kael remained silent.
"I am a knight." She continued. "Even if my mind has betrayed me, my body has not. I understand what it means to serve. To protect. To obey orders. I understand pain, and how to push through it." She placed her hand lightly over her bruised side. "Injury is a part of the role. We don't seek comfort. We don't expect to be cared for. We endure."
Gone were the troubling thoughts she had on him but instead she was swallowed again by silent frustration and longing. Longing for what was gone.
