Chapter 8 - 8 - Russel Family

The brunette teenager continued to sink silently into her thoughts, which returned more and more to that day, before shaking her head. She didn't want to think about it anymore.

Leaving her reverie, she returned to her questions about the press release.

Since the announcement of the meeting, which was now only a few hours away, all sorts of theories and opinions had been put forward, with the media inviting experts to give their views and hypotheses...

And of all the opinions expressed on the subject, none of them were optimistic... everyone agreed that no good news would be announced that evening...

She quickly snapped out of her thoughts at the familiar voice.

"Madie." Behind her, a young man with long hair and a stocky build called out to her with a smile.

"Josh." She stood up, and they walked together. The boy soon turned to her, excited.

"I've heard some new information. We were completely wrong about the time loop theory with the Titans as the reset button..."

said the boy, heading toward the parking lot.

"In fact, today's announcement will be about the first successful communication with an extraterrestrial community..."

continued the boy, completely serious.

Josh opened the door of a red minivan, got in, and put the key in the ignition.

"And what are your sources?" asked Madisson, sitting down next to him.

"It's from TheSecretOfMosnter.org," he replied quickly before explaining what this new theory was all about.

"Madisson, you told me that the roars and cries of the titans have a unique frequency, a kind of universally widespread wave that, regardless of the listener's hearing range, can be heard distinctly, even by those who are deaf or have no hearing. It's not just an acoustic wave, but a psionic wave It passes through the pores of your skin and communicates directly to your brain..." The young girl nodded.

Madisson knew a lot about bioacoustics thanks to her mother.

The young girl was also fascinated by mysteries and theories about the Titans and thought she understood where he was coming from.

"Oh, I see, and if we take this wave and amplify it through a satellite in space..." murmured the girl, her eyes lighting up.

It would be audible to any form of life with consciousness, regardless of language or biological communication system, and the wave could theoretically propagate because even though sound doesn't travel in a vacuum, it's not really an acoustic wave...

Josh nodded with a smile, Madison thought deeply for a few seconds before noticing a problem

"But how could it reach extraterrestrial communities that are possibly billions of light years away?" said the young girl. "And that's assuming the wave travels as fast as light..."

Josh was looking at the road, his hands on the steering wheel, and he smiled even more broadly.

"Yes, but you're forgetting that in addition to being a psionic wave, it's made up of radioactive particles and who knows what else. We don't know how it reacts in the quantum realm, or if it's even affected by quantum physics. Maybe the psionic wave teleports through mini wormholes rather than traveling through space..." said the boy.

"Hmm..." replied the girl simply, her shoulder-length hair resting against the window as she leaned her face against it, looking outside.

"That's better than the previous theory, with the United States starting to make human sacrifices to win the favor of the Titans... that was very Greek mythology..."

Maddisson just chuckled, his eyes fixed on the city.

Shops, boutiques, and other businesses were closing one after the other. Tonight, except for hospitals and commissariats, no place was allowed to remain open. The government would even cover any potential loss of income...

Tonight, the whole country must be in front of their TVs.

All the passers-by walked quickly, returning home or heading for open spaces such as parks or stadiums, which had been equipped with seats and a giant screen.

"It's weird..." the young girl's soft voice echoed in the car.

"It's a bit like we're getting ready to abandon the city," Madison sighed. "All that's missing are the barricades on the doors and windows to make it feel like the apocalypse is coming..." The girl was really wondering what was going on.

"Yeah... or a war..." Josh replied, his eyes also fixed on the cars on the road, which were already becoming fewer and fewer.

"You know, it even happens in prisons. The inmates are gathered in the hall or in the courtyard, where a giant screen is set up..." Josh had read about it earlier in an official government statement.

"Ugh," the girl hissed, her head still resting on the window.

A moment of silence passed, Madisson's hazel eyes scanning the streets thoughtfully, watching them empty.

"Any news from your mom?" Josh looked at his friend for a second before turning his eyes back to the road.

Madisson sighed and shook her head gently.

Another moment of quiet silence passed.

"No, nothing since last time. It's making her bitter... She's called all her contacts, all her friends..." said the young girl softly.

"Hmmm..." The teenager shook his head gently.

"But even she, who's been working at Monarch for five years and is one of the top people there, all she's been able to get back is a name..."

He didn't finish his sentence and just kept driving...

"Project G.O.L.I.A.T.H..." whispered Maddie. It was the only piece of privileged information she had. She and Josh had tried to decode the letters, looking for words that corresponded to the anagram.

They came up with a few theories, but nothing convincing...

"We'll know everything tonight..." concluded the young girl. Calm returned to the car as it drove through the city.

They soon arrived home. Josh was five minutes away from Madison, a few streets away.

The boy stopped in front of his house, a charming residence where he lived for half the year.

The rest of the time, Madison accompanied her mother on her missions when she was allowed to.

"Come on, Maddie, see you tomorrow, when the world will know that we're not alone in the universe..." said the teenager through the window.

"Yeah, that must be it, Josh. See you tomorrow," said the brunette, smiling at her friend, who waved goodbye and drove off.

Madison walked through the gate, taking the keys out of her bag as she crossed the garden.

"Mom, I'm home!" she shouted as she walked through the door. The place was spacious and tidy, the walls were white, and there were a few family photos on the wall, photos of four people, and a small jar of fruit sitting on the counter in the open kitchen.

In the living room, a woman was hunched over, her nose buried in a pile of files on the coffee table. She looked up when she saw Maddie come in, her smooth blonde hair falling back, and welcomed her daughter.

"My darling, how was school?" Emma Russell, a brilliant scientist and head of Monarch's ORCA project, a leader in the field of bioacoustics, is also a fervent environmental activist. Emma is convinced that the Titans are here to restore the natural order of things, as cruel as that may seem to others...

She approached and took her daughter in her arms.

"Quick, we didn't have much class," Maddie said, taking off her bag and kissing her mother.

"Yes..." Emma sighed, her face grimacing despite herself. The woman didn't like being left out like this, especially when it came to Monarch...

"There are pancakes in the kitchen," the mother informed her daughter.

"You're just in time, it starts in less than 30 minutes..." Emma went back to her work; she had a lot to do before leaving for China.

Maddie went to help herself and came back a few minutes later with a full plate, sitting down in the living room next to her mother, who was filling out documents.

A peaceful moment passed quietly.

And while Emma was working on her files, Madisson spoke up between mouthfuls

"I spoke to Dad..." Emma said nothing, her only reaction was a grimace.

"He's fine," she said calmly, still silent

"He doesn't know what's going on either..."

"How could that drunk know anything?" Emma couldn't hold back any longer

Maddie, who was tucking into her hearty breakfast of pancakes dripping with honey, sighed.

"You know very well that it hasn't been easy for him. Andrew was everything to him..." But she was interrupted.

"And I wasn't?" Her mother's voice echoed loudly in the living room. Lifting her head from her documents, she looked at her daughter.

"But I held on, I did it for my family, he didn't do it for you..." Her tone was firm and sharp.

The teenager's clear hazel eyes looked back at her, and... she simply said what was in her heart.

"You're being unfair to him."

She missed her father, her family, her old life, her little brother...

Emma was silent for a moment and turned her head away, but she whispered to herself

"He's the one who's unfair to me..." Her mind hidden behind two sad eyes, bitter thoughts and sad memories flooded her mind.

But she soon snapped out of it, gently shaking her blonde hair. She hated thinking about it, going back to the past. She turned back to her daughter.

"Listen, I'm just trying to protect you, okay?" she said in a softer tone.

Madisson looked back at her and nodded.

"You and I are a team, never forget that, my darling."

She decided to change the subject to something more important.

"By the way, I've almost finished repairing the ORCA. I'm going back to Yunnan to try it out and fine-tune the device."

Emma smiled as she watched her daughter abandon her feast and turn to her, surprised.

"Really?" Maddison smiled despite herself.

"Yes, and I have to ask you if you want to come with me. You're a big girl now, you can stay here if you want." Said the mother, even though she was smiling slyly.

She didn't have to wait long.

"Are you kidding? Of course I'll come with you. I'm not going to miss what might be the first successful communication between humans and titans. And you always tell me that you and I are a team," Maddison smiled at her mother. They didn't agree about her father, but her mother was her best friend.

"And I can't wait to see Mothra again," she said, picking up her fork again.

Emma giggled softly.

"You know, she hasn't changed much, still in her cocoon."

"If ORCA works, it could change the world. We might not have to fear the Titans anymore. Coexistence would no longer be just an ideal. What you've always dreamed of might come true," said Madisson, looking at her mother, the woman she had always admired...

And... Emma smiled a little, a faint, slightly forced smile.

Something had changed. She had begun to open her eyes since G-Day, since Andrew... to the truth about this world. "Listen, Emma..." But she was interrupted before she could finish her sentence.

"TIIINNNHHHHH!" An alarm sounded, a loud, noisy sound that echoed throughout the city, and with it, Madisson's cell phone vibrated strongly.

The TV, which had been turned off, turned on by itself. It was a precaution taken since G-Day. All televisions could turn on and warn of a Titan attack, but more importantly, they could display all the anti-Titan shelters in the city, as well as the city's alarms and other warnings that would quickly alert people in the event of a MUTO attack.

The screen lit up and showed a 10-second countdown. Madisson checked the notification she and the rest of the United States had received on their cell phones.

"It's time..." she said in a low voice.
