We started right away from where we had stopped, returning to the same sequence that had failed earlier to understand what went wrong. The training field was silent except for the faint rustle of paper and the scratch of Shizuru's pencil as she adjusted our notes. Once we retraced the steps of the last attempt, we began trying new variations, each one slightly different in seal timing or chakra concentration. Every test began with hope and ended the same way, collapsing in a flicker of static and fading light.
Time blurred. The early evening sun sank behind the trees, and the sky turned deep blue before slowly giving way to night. A faint chill spread through the field, and the only sounds left were the whisper of wind and Shizuru's tired breathing. The ground was scattered with crumpled pages filled with seal patterns, chakra pathways, and notes of failure that had started to look identical.
Shizuru exhaled and tilted her head, cracking her neck before rubbing her stiff shoulders. "Alright," she muttered, voice flat and drained, "this variation isn't a success either."
I nodded silently, the soldier pill still burning in my system and keeping me alert long past the point of exhaustion. Shizuru, however, looked completely worn out. Her eyelids drooped as she muttered, "I want to go home. I have training tomorrow, and I'm exhausted."
I took a slow breath and gave a small smile. "I know. Let's try one last variation, then we're done for the night."
She looked at me for a moment as if debating whether I was serious, then gave in with a reluctant nod. Her patience and loyalty had carried this project forward more than my chakra ever could. I was grateful for that.
I stepped into position at the center of the field and closed my eyes, letting the noise of the world fall away. Even the faint chirping of insects seemed to fade as I steadied my breathing. My chakra gathered deep within my core, bright and alive, before I guided it outward through a new sequence of pathways I intended to test. The flow was smooth at first, like a river finding its course, steady and responsive beneath my will.
Then I began the hand seal sequence.
Ox. Snake. Bird. Horse. Dog. Boar. Tiger. Ox. Rat. Dragon. Monkey. Ram.
Each hand sign connected to a tenketsu, opening channels one by one. Chakra streamed through me like liquid fire, perfectly measured and guided. I imagined the flow like roots spreading from my center, each seal shaping the next.
At first, nothing changed. The field remained silent, the air still. My shoulders sagged slightly. I was ready to end the attempt when something tugged deep inside my chest. My chakra was being drawn out at an alarming rate, faster than any previous attempt.
The air around me tingled sharply. Shizuru's head jerked up immediately, her expression turning from tired to alarmed. The grass around my feet began to bend as a low vibration spread through the earth. A thin, piercing hum filled the air, growing louder with each heartbeat.
Tiny sparks began to appear, faint as drifting embers in the dark. Blue light flickered around me, weak at first, then stronger, multiplying until dozens of small arcs danced through the air like fireflies made of lightning. The atmosphere grew heavy and charged, thick enough to press against my skin. The air itself seemed to split apart into layers of energy, positive above, negative below, and the space between them began to hum like a living thing struggling to breathe.
The flickers came faster. Each one lasted longer, clawing at the night until the world was wrapped in a pale electric glow. The flashes began to connect, sketching lines in the air that twisted and grew, pulse after pulse, building a shape I could barely comprehend.
Then, without warning, the entire sky detonated.
A blinding flash ripped through the darkness, turning night into day. The sound followed a heartbeat later, a thunderclap so violent it felt like the earth itself screamed. The shockwave slammed into me, forcing me back a few steps, while Shizuru fell to her knees, clutching her ears as the forest echoed with endless rolling thunder. Dust exploded outward, leaves tore from branches, and static filled the air until it tasted metallic on my tongue.
When the light finally dimmed, I saw it.
A tree stood before me, a towering, impossible creation of pure lightning.
It wasn't solid. It shimmered and wavered, its form flickering in and out of reality as if it existed between worlds. Its trunk rose from the scorched ground like something divine, white-blue at the core, veined with streams of violet light that coiled upward in constant motion. Arcs of energy crawled across its surface, whispering and hissing like the air was alive.
The branches extended outward in every direction, wide and uneven, each one trailing tendrils of glowing plasma that danced and twisted in ghostly patterns. Every time the light flickered, the space around it warped, bending air and shadow like heat above fire.
The roots burrowed deep into the ground, glowing like molten metal. They mirrored the branches above, stretching far enough to make the earth itself pulse with light. Sparks ran down in thin, graceful streams, forming glowing veins across the soil. The canopy spread wide, almost eight meters from end to end, its delicate threads of light fluttering like leaves caught in an invisible storm.
My chakra drained faster than ever before. It felt like the creation was breathing, consuming me just to keep itself alive. The pull was constant, unrelenting, and yet I couldn't look away. Every nerve in my body screamed, but I was entranced by what stood before me, a vision of power born from nothing but will.
I raised my hand toward a point on the ground within the tree's range.
The lightning reacted instantly. The nearest branch flared brighter, its filaments tightening as if aware of my intent. A violent surge rippled down its length, drawn toward the earth where the negative charge pooled around the roots. The moment the two forces aligned, the connection snapped into place.
Positive met negative.
Sky met earth.
The result was thunder given form. A bolt of pure destruction crashed down, tearing through the air like a divine blade. The ground erupted in a blinding flash as the impact split the soil open and unleashed a column of light that tore skyward. Heat and dust burst outward in a roaring wave, scattering debris like rain while the shock rippled through the forest, flattening everything in its path.
I broke the hand seal to end the jutsu and flickered on instinct, grabbing Shizuru and pulling her close, using my body as a shield as shards of stone and earth slammed into my back. Pain tore across my skin with every hit, but I held firm. My only thought was to protect her, knowing my body could endure far more than hers ever could.
When the rumbling stopped, the world went silent. The smell of ozone hung thick and sharp. A dull sting spread across my back, followed by the slow warmth of blood sliding down my skin, tracing uneven paths through the dust and sweat. I clenched my jaw and stayed still, forcing my breathing to steady as the haze of pain mixed with the fading crackle of electricity in the air.
I turned to look back and saw a crater where the bolt had hit, deep and smoking, glowing faintly blue around the edges. The sight filled me with disbelief, horror, and pride all at once.
My legs gave out, and I fell to my knees. My chakra was almost completely gone. My body trembled violently, the world tilting sideways as my vision began to fade. The last thing I saw before blacking out was Shizuru lying on the ground, clutching her ears, her face pale in the glow of fading lightning.
I woke up sometime later with Shizuru's face hovering over me, pale and filled with worry. Her expression was tight with pain, and a faint trail of dried blood ran from her ears down to her collar, staining her shirt near the shoulder.
I sighed weakly. "I'm sorry, Shizuru."
She shook her head and said something, but I couldn't hear her voice. When she pointed to her ears, I understood. I touched mine and felt the same dried blood along the side of my head. My hearing was gone, replaced by a high, constant ringing that drilled into my skull.
I tried to stand and almost fell, but the soldier pill had already begun its work, keeping my body moving even as I felt drained to the bone. Using what little strength I had left, I helped Shizuru up and began walking her toward the village. Each step made my vision blur, but I refused to stop.
By the time we reached the hospital gates, the night air had grown colder. A doctor spotted us approaching, his eyes widening in alarm when he saw the blood at our ears. His head moved towards the inside of the hospital, and a group of nurses rushed forward, catching us both before we could collapse.
They laid us on nearby stretchers and brought us into one of the wards, checking our injuries in silence. Warm chakra soon filled the air as one of the medics placed glowing green hands over my ears, using the Mystical Palm Technique. Slowly, the burning pressure in my head began to fade, and the ringing softened. Faint whispers returned, turning gradually into words.
When my hearing finally came back, the first thing I noticed was the sound of shallow breathing beside me. Shizuru was already asleep, her body covered with a blanket, her face calm but pale from exhaustion.
I leaned back, eyes half open, feeling the weight of fatigue press down on me. I was covered in dust, my chakra almost completely drained, but a quiet laugh escaped me anyway. The idea had worked.
I had actually done it. I had created a new jutsu in this world. It wasn't perfect, but it existed. The pride I felt was sharp and heavy, a warmth in my chest that refused to fade. It felt like a divine feat, something beyond human reach, proof that even in this world of prodigies and legends, I could carve my own place among them.
I sat there for a long moment, staring at my hands still faintly buzzing with static, until the door slid open.
Ayaka stepped inside, her face a mix of anger and concern. The faint smile on my lips froze as her eyes locked onto mine, and memories of my first day in this world came flooding back all at once.
