Chapter 4 - Chapter Four: Upgrading The Beggar

A beautiful she-wolf with chestnut brown hair and onyx eyes ran freely through the forest, she ran between trees and jumped over pits. She looked like a wandering forest spirit, beautiful and serene but at the same time lonely. She was alone.

She didn't seem to slow down at all as she weave through obstacles in her way but unfortunately for her she couldn't avoid what was ahead of her, a net had dropped out of no where from above catching her off guard. As soon as in touched her, she howled in pain, it was made from wolfsbane of course and it was a giving that she didn't detect the ambush ahead of time because of it.

What happened next was too harrowing for the sleeping Harley to keep quiet as she moaned and whimpered all through the nightmare. It was impossible to get a good night's sleep because of it and then there was then that annoying voice that wouldn't shut up.

*Wake up... Wake up... WAKE UP!!*

Her eyes flew open as she sat up and quickly scanned her surroundings before she sighed in relief. She was still in the hollow of the large Miscara tree she had found in the forest... Well they had found. She thought as she glared moodily at the handsome Ezra squatting beside her.

"At least you woke up, you're impossible to sleep with. I'm sure your boyfriends don't last, no man can tolerate all that", he said as he sat back in his corner of the hollow. She scowled angrily at him.

"Says the beggar", she spat back. He felt like he'd die of hypertension at any moment. He wasn't a beggar!

Before he could retort, her stomach growled loudly causing the space to fall into an awkward silence. "What are you, a pig? You literally ate more than half the fish we caught earlier and you're still hungry? Who knows if your husband chased you away after you ate him out of house and home? ", he blurted out and received and angry glare.

Harley turned away from him and laid back down to sleep, of course she was always hungry. She's pregnant for christ sake! This was already their third day on the road together and they were about to arrive at their destination, well, it was Harley's destination. Ezra was just tagging along since he seemed pretty homeless at the moment.

They were headed to the closest human civilization, Silver Falls. Their trip hasn't been easy but it wasn't particularly hard either, the two were capable and smart enough to get by and to Harley's surprise, Ezra wasn't in anyway useless as she thought. He did most of the hunting and scouting so they avoided many unnecessary situations.

She tried to force herself to sleep but Ezra had other plans, "You still haven't told me your name you know?", he said as he leaned his back on the wall of the tree as he doodled on the ground with a stick.

"... It's Harley", she didn't really feel like hiding it anymore as he had been pestering her most of the time because of it. He mouthed her name then smirked, "It's a pretty name. It suits you", his compliment fell on deaf ears.

The space was quiet for a while before he said, "Your nightmares...", he could see her body tense up at the mention of it. He sighed quietly and sighed, "it seems like you don't want to talk about it"

" At least you can read the room ", she said making him a bit pissed, "You don't have to be so sarcastic all the time "

" And you don't have to be stupid at the same duration ", she said, her back still facing him. He clenched his fist then sighed, " Fine... We all have our secrets. I saved some fish from earlier, are you still hungry? ", the room was quiet for a while before Harley sat up and turned to him, " Yes please "

He shook his head and tossed a folded parchment made of leaves. In it was roasted fish that honestly smelt heavenly to Harley at the moment, she didn't wait and immediately dug in.

After she finished eating she stretched before laying on her back as she stared at the ceiling, he continued to watch her silently the two not talking. Harley's mind was busy with her next step and what she'd do once she reached the human civilization. Her identity...

"So Harley... Do you want to tell me about yourself?", he asked. "No", she replied almost immediately. He scoffed," Well I won't tell you about myself either ", he folded his arms and pouted slightly.

"Good. A beggars tale is always a sad one", she said bluntly but it hit him hard, he decided to just not talk to her anymore so he wouldn't be insulted further.

In the late afternoon after hours of walking they finally reached the border of silver lake. They had both fixed their appearances by dimming their bright eye colours, masking their fangs and their supernatural beauty. Ezra's silver hair was now jet black with strands of silver here and there. Their appearances might not have been outstanding anymore but they were still good looking like this.

This was becoming human.

They finally arrived in town and Ezra looked relieved, "Thank the Goddess! I can get an actual bath", he said as he secretly sent Pug to scout for the best guest house in this town.

Harley scoffed, "I thought this was clean for beggars", she mocked him again. "I'll have you know that even beggars can be clean if they want to", he didn't know if he was defending himself or all the poor beggars out there.

"So you admit it?", he nearly choked from her direct question. He feared he might develop problems with his blood pressure if he argued further with her. The two walked till they passed a thrift store, she looked at the store then back at Ezra before walking in. Ezra was speechless but followed her in, racks of clothing shoes and other items were arranged all over the store.

The two stood by the door silently before they looked at each other, "Aren't you getting anything?", they chorused before falling silent again.

"I thought you were smart. Aren't you supposed to have grasped the fact that I'm trying to buy you clothes?", Harley said as she folded her arms. Ezra felt offended, "What do you mean by that? I've never been to this kind of place before, how was I supposed to know what you wanted to do?"

Harley sighed and patted his shoulder, "You poor thing, you haven't seen a thrift store before? I should have known", again she had misunderstood him and destroyed his pride. He was too weak emotionally to argue back and just sighed, soon a few set of outfits were gotten for him.

He currently wore a plain white long sleeved shirt with a v-neck design, black pants and white sneakers. He even got some accessories like a black stud, a silver NATO chain and a crossbody bag. Harley had to admit he looked really good, he could become a model for sure.

As they were leaving the store, lots of people couldn't stop staring at the two especially al Ezra. Girls looked like they'd give up their lives just to get him to look at them. Ezra smiled at the girls while all squeeled like they were mental.

"Are they stupid? If only they knew you were a beggar", she muttered irking Ezra. "I'm sure they wouldn't mind, they could even become my sugar mommas just so they could look at this face everyday"

Harley almost choked at his words, "So do you mean I'm your sugar mommy? But I don't like your face", Ezra shuddered at the thought of that even happening.

"You're pretty but please don't impose such thoughts on me", he said not wanting to think about it anymore. They had left the store and were now walking towards the forest path, "Where are we going?", he couldn't help but ask.

She didn't want to answer but eventually did, " My family owns a property somewhere in this forest, that's where I'm headed", he nodded in understanding. He soon found the bags heavy and summoned Pug, " Eat this", before the familiar could react, Ezra had already shoved the shopping bags down it's throat. Harley felt bad for the poor thing, being stuck with such a heartless owner.

"How do you even have a familiar? You aren't a vampire or a witch, are you?", she asked while she watched Pug swallow all the bags. Ezra immediately felt smug as he explained, "I was actually born with a special affinity to communicate with familiars and spirits"

Harley was quite surprised, " That's a really rare affinity, it's a waste that you're a beggar", his pride was once again shattered.
